imgenh.dll is missing from your computer, imgenh.dll was not found, or imgenh.dll could not be loaded usually means Canon ScanGear is damaged, incomplete, or incompatible with the scanner software currently installed.
The safe fix is to repair or reinstall the complete Canon ScanGear, MP Driver, or scanner package for your exact model. Do not begin by downloading imgenh.dll from a random DLL website or copying it into System32.
What is imgenh.dll
imgenh.dll is a Canon application file described as ScanGear Image Enhancement. It is part of ScanGear CS, Canon scanner-driver software used by Canon scanning utilities and compatible TWAIN applications.
It is not a standard Windows system DLL. Canon ScanGear can be called by:

The exact parent application depends on your scanner model and the Canon driver package installed on the PC.
Public file catalogues associate some copies with Canon, ScanGear CS, and an x86 build. Those catalogue details should not be treated as a universal version, size, or architecture requirement for every scanner. The correct file is the one installed by the Canon package intended for your model and Windows installation.
Common imgenh.dll error messages
Windows may display one of these typical loader messages:
imgenh.dll is missing from your computerThe program can't start because imgenh.dll is missing from your computer. These are standard Windows-style messages. They do not, by themselves, identify whether the file was deleted, quarantined, damaged, or supplied by the wrong Canon driver.
The error commonly appears when:
- Opening Canon scanning software
- Starting a scan from an image editor or office program
- Reinstalling or removing Canon scanner software
- Antivirus software quarantines a Canon file
- An incomplete backup is restored
- An older 32-bit ScanGear package is used on newer 64-bit Windows
- Files in the Canon TWAIN installation folder are damaged
The 60-second answer
- Identify the exact Canon scanner or multifunction-printer model.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for Canon ScanGear, MP Drivers, IJ Scan Utility, or the model’s setup package.
- Check your antivirus quarantine for
imgenh.dll. - Download the scanner package for the exact model from Canon Support.
- Remove the old Canon scanner software if Canon’s model instructions recommend it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete Canon package as administrator.
- Test scanning in Canon’s own utility before testing the original third-party application.
Reinstalling the parent Canon package is more reliable than replacing one DLL because it restores the companion files, TWAIN components, configuration, and architecture-matched driver.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Canon ScanGear package
This is the most likely solution for a missing or unloadable imgenh.dll.
1. Identify the exact device
Check the label on the scanner or printer. Record the complete model name, including any series designation. Do not select a similar-looking Canon model from the support page.
You can also check Windows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers.
- Note the listed Canon device.
2. Remove the damaged Canon installation
If the Canon package is visibly incomplete or the error began after an unsuccessful installation:

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for
Canon. - Remove the relevant ScanGear, scanner driver, MP Driver, IJ Scan Utility, or complete setup package.
- Follow Canon’s uninstall prompts.
- Restart Windows.
On older Windows installations, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Canon scanner software, and choose Uninstall.
Do not remove unrelated Canon printer software unless the model’s instructions identify it as part of the scanner package.
3. Download the model-specific package
Open Canon’s official support site and search for the exact scanner or multifunction-printer model. Select your installed Windows edition and the offered architecture, then download the current available scanner driver, ScanGear, MP Drivers, IJ Scan Utility, or complete setup package.
Canon distributes scanner software by model. There is no universal Canon imgenh.dll download intended for all devices.

4. Install the package
- Disconnect the scanner if the Canon installer requests it.
- Open the downloaded installer.
- Right-click the setup file and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Reconnect or power on the scanner when prompted.
- Restart Windows after installation.
If Windows blocks the installer, right-click it, select Properties, and check whether an Unblock option appears on the General tab. Apply it only when you obtained the installer from Canon’s official support page.
5. Test the result
First launch Canon’s own scanning utility and perform a test scan. Then try the application that originally displayed the error.
If Canon’s utility works but the third-party application does not, the DLL installation is probably repaired. The remaining problem may be that the application supports WIA but not TWAIN, has the wrong scanner selected, or requires its own device configuration.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a valid application file after a scan, cleanup operation, or false positive.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
imgenh.dll, Canon, ScanGear, or the scanner installation folder. - Open the event details.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. First confirm that:
- The file came from the Canon installation
- Its path is inside the expected Canon program or TWAIN directory
- The associated Canon software is installed for your scanner
- The file has not been replaced by a downloaded copy
If the original Canon file was quarantined, reinstall ScanGear from Canon rather than restoring an uncertain file. If your security software allows an item to be restored, use that only when the file’s origin and path are trustworthy. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection or create an exception for an unverified DLL.
After reinstalling, run a full security scan and test the Canon utility again.
Fix 3: Check the Canon driver in Device Manager
A scanner can appear installed while its driver or device association is broken.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers.
- Find the Canon scanner.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Windows may not find the complete ScanGear package through Device Manager. If it does not, use Canon’s model-specific installer instead.
If the device has a warning icon:
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete Canon package as administrator.
Do not substitute a driver for another Canon scanner. A similarly named package can install the wrong TWAIN components and leave imgenh.dll errors unresolved.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Some older ScanGear CS packages are 32-bit. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but a 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

This can produce a load error even when a file named imgenh.dll exists on the computer.

Do not try to solve this by copying the file into both Windows folders. In particular:
- Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32 - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64 - Do not rename it or replace another file with the same name
- Do not mix files from different Canon driver packages
System32 and SysWOW64 are managed by Windows compatibility and redirection rules. They are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs.
Instead:
- Check whether your scanner model has a Windows 10 or Windows 11 package on Canon Support.
- Install the package matching the application and operating system.
- If the scanner is older, read Canon’s compatibility notes for that exact model.
- Test with Canon’s own utility.
- If a third-party application fails, check whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit and whether it supports TWAIN.
If Canon provides only an older package, the issue may be an unsupported combination of old scanner software and the current Windows environment rather than a missing file.
Fix 5: Repair the Canon installation from Apps
Some Canon installers expose a repair option.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the Canon scanner package.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon scanning utility.
Not every Canon package provides Repair. If the option is absent or does not restore scanning, uninstall the package and perform a clean installation from Canon.
Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore an application DLL supplied by Canon, so they should not be the first fix for imgenh.dll.
Use them when other Windows features are also malfunctioning, installers fail unexpectedly, or several unrelated applications report damaged system components.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall or repair ScanGear if the Canon error remains.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations does not mean Canon ScanGear is installed correctly.

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring missing DLLs.
There is no verified evidence that imgenh.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. Running:
regsvr32 imgenh.dll
is therefore not a recommended repair.
A “module failed to load” message from regsvr32 does not prove that the file is missing or that ScanGear has been repaired. It may simply mean that the DLL is not designed for manual registration, has missing companion files, or belongs to the wrong architecture.
Do not download imgenh.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong architecture
- A version intended for another Canon scanner
- A file with missing companion components
- A file that Windows or antivirus software rejects
Even a genuine-looking DLL may not fix the installation because ScanGear also depends on its driver, TWAIN components, configuration, and device-specific files.
Use Canon’s official support page for the exact scanner or multifunction-printer model. Use Microsoft’s documentation for Windows repair commands and system troubleshooting. Do not treat a standalone DLL as an official Canon installation method.

If reinstalling ScanGear does not work
Record these details before seeking further support:
- Exact Canon scanner or printer model
- Windows edition and build
- Application that displays the error
- Full path of any existing
imgenh.dll - Whether the file was quarantined
- The Device Manager status message
- Whether Canon’s own scan utility works
- Whether the application expects TWAIN or WIA
- Any setup or Event Viewer error
Also check that the scanner is selected as the active device. Multiple old Canon packages can leave several TWAIN data sources installed, and an application may be trying to open the wrong one.

Is imgenh.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Canon ScanGear CS and is not identified as a normal Windows system component.
Is imgenh.dll safe?
It can be legitimate when installed with Canon ScanGear in the expected Canon program or TWAIN location. Check the file path, properties, publisher information, and antivirus history. A file with the same name in an unexpected folder is not automatically safe.
Should I copy imgenh.dll into System32?
No. Reinstall the Canon package instead. Copying an application DLL into Windows folders can create architecture and servicing problems.
Should I copy it into SysWOW64 because the file is 32-bit?
No. Do not manually place it in either System32 or SysWOW64. Let the Canon installer place the file and its companion components correctly.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no verified evidence that imgenh.dll is supplied by those Microsoft runtimes. Install or repair them only when another error specifically identifies a missing runtime component.
Will SFC restore imgenh.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while imgenh.dll belongs to Canon application software. Reinstall ScanGear for the direct repair.
Does regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually no. There is no verified evidence that this file requires manual registration.
Can an older Canon scanner work on Windows 11?
That depends on Canon’s package and the exact scanner model. Older 32-bit ScanGear software may work through Windows compatibility features, but Canon does not provide one universal compatibility guarantee for every device.

What if Canon’s utility works but my image editor does not?
Check whether the image editor supports TWAIN, whether the correct Canon scanner is selected, and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Some applications support WIA but not TWAIN, so the scanner can work in Canon’s utility while failing in that application.
