The 60-second answer
impmail.dll is the Microsoft Outlook Mail Importer component. Outlook uses it for importing mail and addresses from older clients, including Eudora, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail. It is an Office component, not a standalone Windows system DLL. Microsoft documents the importer operation in Outlook registry data. Microsoft Outlook registry example
The safest repair path is:
- Repair Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 with Online Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Outlook.
- If the error remains, reinstall the same Office product and architecture.
- Check antivirus quarantine and the Office installation path.
- Use DISM and System File Checker only if Windows itself also appears damaged.
Do not download impmail.dll from a random DLL site or copy it into System32. A replacement can have the wrong Office version, architecture, or dependencies, and it does not repair the damaged Outlook installation that caused the error.
What is impmail.dll?
impmail.dll is a Microsoft Corporation file associated with Microsoft Outlook. Its description is Outlook Mail Importer.

The component supports Outlook’s legacy mail-import functions. Microsoft’s registry evidence connects it with importing mail and addresses from:
- Eudora
- Outlook Express
- Windows Mail
That makes this primarily an older-Outlook troubleshooting issue. Microsoft update manifests show impmail.dll in the Outlook 2010 outlook-x-none.msp package for both x86 and x64 Office editions. The file is therefore part of the Outlook installation rather than a normal Windows component. Microsoft Outlook 2010 update manifest
Do not assume that every current Microsoft 365 installation contains this file. Microsoft’s current Office documentation does not identify impmail.dll as a separately installable runtime.
What the error means
“impmail.dll is missing” or “was not found”
Usually, Outlook or an Outlook-related startup entry is trying to load a file that is absent from the expected Office installation. Common causes include:
- A damaged or incomplete Office installation
- An Office update that failed or rolled back
- Antivirus quarantine
- A cleanup utility removing an Office file
- Mixed or conflicting Office installations
- Disk corruption
- Malware damage
- A stale Outlook shortcut or startup entry
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that impmail.dll itself is absent. Windows may also display that wording when a dependency required by the DLL is missing.
“The file is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error”
This usually points to a file that is corrupted, truncated, tampered with, or from the wrong Office build. It does not automatically mean that Windows is incompatible with Outlook.
The safest response is to restore the file through Office repair or reinstallation instead of replacing it manually.
“There was a problem starting impmail.dll”
This wording can appear when Windows finds a reference to the file but cannot load it successfully. Check whether the file is present, whether antivirus quarantined it, and whether the Office installation is intact.

Before repairing: identify the affected Office installation
First determine which program is producing the message.
- Note whether the error appears when starting Outlook, Windows, or another application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or another Outlook installation.
- If more than one Office edition is listed, record each name.
An error that appears only when Outlook starts points strongly toward Office. An error that appears at Windows sign-in after Office was removed may come from an obsolete shortcut, scheduled task, or startup entry.
Check the Office architecture
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Office. The correct impmail.dll architecture is determined by Office, not simply by the bitness of Windows.
To check from Outlook:
- Open Outlook if it starts.
- Select File.
- Select Office Account.
- Select About Outlook.
- Read the version line, which includes 32-bit or 64-bit.
If Outlook will not open, check the installed Office entry or ask the organization’s Office administrator which architecture was deployed.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not copy an x64 file into a 32-bit Office installation, or the reverse. Microsoft’s Outlook 2010 manifests show separate x86 and x64 packages with different file sizes, so the editions are not interchangeable. Microsoft February 2020 Outlook 2010 update
Fix 1: Run Office Online Repair
This is the most likely fix when impmail.dll is missing, invalid, or damaged.
Online Repair replaces more Office components than Quick Repair and is preferable when a DLL is absent.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Close Outlook and all other Office programs.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft’s repair instructions use the same Settings path for supported Office editions. Repair an Office application
After restarting, open Outlook normally. A successful repair should remove the loader error and allow Outlook to start without requesting impmail.dll.
If the repair stops, reports that it cannot complete, or the message returns immediately, continue with the checks below rather than downloading the DLL.
Older Windows and Office installations
For older installations, use Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Microsoft Office.
- Select Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
The available repair choices vary by Office release and installation technology. Choose the more comprehensive repair option when it is offered.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching Office product
If Online Repair does not restore Outlook, the installation may be incomplete, mixed with another Office edition, or too damaged for repair.
Before uninstalling, make sure you have one of the following:
- The Microsoft account used to install Microsoft 365 or Office
- A valid product key
- Your organization’s approved deployment source
- Original licensed installation media
Then:
- Close all Office programs.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected Microsoft 365 or Office entry.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the license, or use the approved organizational installer.
- Install the same Office product and the intended 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Outlook and test the operation that produced the error.

If you use Office 2010
Office 2010 support ended on October 13, 2020. It no longer receives normal security servicing or supported standard downloads from Microsoft. If the affected computer must continue using Office 2010, use the original licensed media or your organization’s approved deployment source, then apply the final appropriate updates. Microsoft Office 2010 support lifecycle
Do not install a random newer impmail.dll into an Office 2010 directory. Reinstall the complete licensed Office product instead.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an Office file after an update, cleanup operation, or detection event.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving Outlook, Office, or
impmail.dll.
Do not restore the file simply because its name looks familiar. Check:
- The full file path
- Whether it is inside the expected Office installation
- The digital signature
- Whether the Office installation itself is trusted
- Whether the detection occurred after a malware incident
If the file is in quarantine and the Office installation is otherwise trusted, follow your organization’s security procedure before restoring it. Microsoft warns that Defender may detect a restored file again. Reinstalling Office is generally safer than restoring a questionable binary. Windows Security Protection History
After a quarantine event, run a full Windows Security scan. If malware is suspected, disconnect the affected machine from sensitive networks and involve the administrator responsible for endpoint security.

impmail.dll belongs to Office, so DISM and SFC are not the normal replacement mechanism for this file. Use them when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is broken, or the problem began with broader system corruption.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component image, while SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither command guarantees that an Office-owned DLL will be restored. Microsoft DISM guidance · Microsoft System File Checker documentation
If SFC reports that it repaired files but Outlook still shows the same error, return to Office Online Repair or reinstall Office.
Running these commands repeatedly without checking what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of detected system problems before repair; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling Outlook remains the definitive fix for an Outlook-owned DLL.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 impmail.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s Outlook registry evidence shows impmail.dll being used as part of an Outlook mail-import operation, not established as a separately registered COM server. Microsoft DllRegisterServer documentation
If you run the command, Windows may report:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not repair a missing, mismatched, or corrupt Office installation. It can also create confusion by making it appear that registration, rather than Office repair, is the problem.
Fix 6: Install Office updates after repair
A failed update or rollback can leave Outlook components inconsistent.

For older Office releases, use the official Microsoft update package appropriate to the installed edition and architecture. Do not use a DLL archive as an update source. Microsoft’s Outlook 2010 update documentation confirms that official Outlook packages can contain impmail.dll. Microsoft Outlook 2010 update
Fix 7: Check for conflicting Office installations
Multiple Office versions installed side by side can leave incompatible files, paths, or registrations.
Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for:
- Multiple Microsoft Office entries
- Microsoft 365 alongside an older perpetual Office edition
- Separate 32-bit and 64-bit Office components
- An Office suite that was supposedly removed but remains listed
- A third-party Outlook add-in or mail-import utility installed around the same time
Do not remove an organization-managed Office installation without approval. If you control the computer, uninstall obsolete or conflicting Office editions, restart Windows, and reinstall one supported architecture.
Fix 8: Check startup entries if Outlook is no longer installed
If the error appears at sign-in but Outlook has already been removed, Windows may be launching an obsolete reference.
Check these locations:
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Disable an obsolete Outlook-related startup item if you recognize it.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
shell:startup. - Press Enter.
- Remove only shortcuts that clearly point to an uninstalled Office program.
- Press Windows key + R again.
- Type
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Review Task Scheduler Library for an obsolete Outlook task.
Do not delete unfamiliar scheduled tasks merely because they mention a DLL. If the entry is not clearly tied to an old Office installation, investigate it with your administrator or security team.

A graphics, printer, or chipset driver does not normally supply impmail.dll. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely to repair this Outlook component unless a separate application has identified a missing dependency.
Windows Features are also not the normal source for an Outlook DLL. Enabling .NET Framework or legacy components will not replace a missing Office file.
Use Device Manager only when there are separate hardware symptoms:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for warning icons under Display adapters, Network adapters, Printers, or other affected categories.
- Right-click the specific device.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device only when you have a documented reason.
- Restart Windows if required.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or your organization’s approved source.
Guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale is separate from repairing Outlook. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and a driver update is not a substitute for repairing Office.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after:

- Capture or import your videos; plus, author DVDs with chapters, menus and personalized disc labels
- Convert CDs, LPs, and cassettes to digital audio files; capture audio from online, or import music directly to your playlist to create custom audio CDs
- Save time by quickly burning audio CDs; archive photo and video backups and other large files across multiple discs
- Make quick photo edits; easily correct and preserve photos with cropping tools, red eye removal, and more
- An Office installation or update
- A cleanup utility
- A driver change
- A system configuration change
To check:
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore if the changes are acceptable.
- Restart Windows and test Outlook.
System Restore can remove applications or updates installed after the selected restore point. It does not replace the need to repair Office if the installation remains damaged. Microsoft System Restore
Why copying impmail.dll is unsafe
Manual DLL replacement is the wrong repair model for this error.
A downloaded file may have:
- The wrong Office generation
- The wrong x86 or x64 architecture
- A different patch level
- Missing dependencies
- A damaged or modified binary
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
Copying it into System32, the Windows directory, or an Outlook folder can also create a second problem by mixing files from unrelated Office installations.
The correct source is the licensed Office installation, its official repair process, or an approved Microsoft deployment package. Do not copy the file from another computer unless the machines have the identical Office product, architecture, patch level, and trusted signature. Even then, repairing Office is safer and more repeatable.
How to tell whether the problem is Outlook or Windows
The problem is more likely Outlook or Office when:
- Only Outlook reports the error
- Office repair changes the behavior
- Other Windows programs work normally
- The message began after an Office update or cleanup
- The file is missing only from the Office directory
The problem may involve Windows when:
- Several unrelated Windows components fail
- Windows Update also reports errors
- SFC finds widespread corruption
- Programs outside Office fail to start
- The computer shows disk, filesystem, or malware symptoms
Even when Windows is damaged, repair Office separately. SFC is not a guaranteed repair source for an Office-owned DLL.
If the error still remains
Collect this information before escalating:
- The exact error text
- The program or shortcut that displays it
- Whether Outlook itself is installed
- The Office product name and build
- Whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The full path where
impmail.dllis expected or found - Whether antivirus quarantined it
- Whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature
- The result of Office Online Repair
- The result of DISM and
sfc /scannow - Relevant Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor entries
- Whether the problem followed an update, cleanup, malware event, or disk failure
Then contact Microsoft Support or your organization’s Office deployment administrator. If the file belongs to an abandoned Office installation, remove the obsolete startup reference or reinstall the original licensed product rather than placing the DLL in a Windows folder.

FAQ
Is impmail.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office. Do not treat it like a protected Windows DLL or assume that Windows itself should provide it.
Is impmail.dll part of Microsoft 365?
Microsoft documents the file in older Outlook material, including Outlook 2010 updates. Current Microsoft 365 documentation does not establish that every modern installation contains it, so do not assume a universal modern file path or version.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this DLL based on the error alone. impmail.dll is an Outlook component, so repair or reinstall Office first.
Should I run regsvr32 impmail.dll?
No. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command and will not restore a damaged Office installation.
Can SFC restore the file?
Do not rely on SFC to restore impmail.dll. SFC checks protected Windows resources, while Office repair restores Office components.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
It is unsafe unless the Office product, architecture, patch level, and signature all match. A complete Office repair is the preferred solution.
What if the message appears after removing Office?
Look for a stale startup shortcut, scheduled task, or abandoned Office registration. Remove only entries you can positively identify, then restart Windows.
What is the safest fix?
Run Office Online Repair. If that fails, uninstall and reinstall the matching licensed Office product rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
