infocomm.dll is a genuine Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) file, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or ordinary Windows DLL. When infocomm.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair IIS first if the error appears during IIS setup or server management; repair the affected application first if only one unrelated program reports it.
What infocomm.dll does
Microsoft identifies infocomm.dll as the Microsoft Internet Information Services Helper library. It belongs to IIS, an optional Windows web-server component published by Microsoft.
A normal installation places the file in an IIS directory similar to:
%windir%System32inetsrvinfocomm.dll
On 64-bit Windows, related 32-bit IIS components may also be present under:

The exact file version depends on the Windows release, IIS version, architecture, and installed servicing updates. Microsoft file tables document examples from IIS 6.0 through IIS 8.5, including these historical entries:
| IIS release | Example Windows release | Example version | Architecture |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIS 6.0 | Windows Server 2003 | 6.0.3790.4215 | x86 |
| IIS 7.0 | Windows Vista | 7.0.6000.20698 | x64 |
| IIS 7.5 | Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 | 7.5.7601.22483 | x86 and x64 |
| IIS 8.0 | Windows 8 and Server 2012 | 8.0.9200.16384 | x86 and x64 |
| IIS 8.5 | Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 | 8.5.9600.16384 | x64 |
These are documented Microsoft file-table examples, not a universal version that should be copied to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer. Microsoft’s IIS file tables and IIS servicing information show why versions and sizes vary.
First, identify what is failing
Before changing Windows, record the full error and the program that displays it. Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because infocomm.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “infocomm.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading infocomm.dll.”
- “infocomm.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
Then answer these questions:
- Does the error appear while installing, starting, or managing IIS?
- Does it appear only when launching one third-party application?
- Does the error show a path under
System32inetsrvorSysWOW64inetsrv? - Is the path instead inside an application folder, game folder, temporary directory, or download directory?
- Did the problem begin after disabling IIS, upgrading Windows, running cleanup software, installing an update, or seeing an antivirus quarantine event?
If IIS Manager or an IIS installation process fails, repair the Windows feature. If one application fails while IIS itself is not being used, do not immediately copy an IIS DLL into that application’s directory. The application may have an incorrect private dependency and should usually be repaired or reinstalled from its vendor.
Fix 1: Re-enable or reinstall IIS
IIS is optional. It is not expected to exist on every Windows installation, so a missing file may simply mean that IIS is disabled or incompletely installed.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 graphical method
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
text
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Expand Internet Information Services.
- Enable the IIS components you need.
- For a typical web-server installation, check World Wide Web Services.
- Enable IIS Management Console if you need IIS Manager.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to apply the changes.
- Restart the computer if Windows requests it.
Microsoft’s IIS installation guidance identifies IIS Management Console and World Wide Web Services among the desktop feature selections.
After restarting, open an elevated Command Prompt and check for the file:
where /r %windir%System32inetsrv infocomm.dll
If the command returns a path under the IIS directory, retry the program or IIS operation that produced the error.

If IIS was already enabled, turn off the relevant IIS feature, restart Windows, turn it on again, and restart once more. This forces Windows to rebuild the optional feature installation rather than relying on a damaged partial state.
DISM method
Use this method when Windows Features fails or when you need a repeatable administrative procedure.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:IIS-WebServerRole /All
- Wait for the operation to reach completion.
- Restart Windows.
- Test IIS or the application again.
If DISM reports that source files are unavailable, do not download infocomm.dll separately. Repair Windows servicing first, or use a matching Windows installation source according to Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.
Windows Server
On Windows Server, open PowerShell as administrator and run:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name Web-Server -IncludeManagementTools
Restart if requested, then test the IIS service and the operation that previously failed. Microsoft documents this process in its Web Server role installation guide.
Fix 2: Repair corrupted Windows components
Use this fix when IIS is enabled but the file is absent, damaged, unsigned, or Windows reports component-store errors.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. This can take time.
- Restart Windows.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows again.
- Retry IIS installation or the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available. Microsoft describes this order in its Repair a Windows Image documentation.

Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
If IIS is not installed and only one program reports infocomm.dll, the program may be expecting an IIS component incorrectly or may have damaged installation files.
Use the application’s own repair process first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program again.
If there is no Repair option:
- Download the installer from the application’s official vendor.
- Close the application.
- Uninstall it from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current package from the official source.
- Use the program’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent launcher command if provided.
A normal application should not require users to copy IIS internals into its private folder. If reinstalling the application does not help, contact its vendor and provide the executable name, full error path, Windows architecture, and the Event Viewer entry for the failure.
Fix 4: Check the file path, architecture, and signature
A file named infocomm.dll is not automatically safe merely because its name is correct. Verify where Windows or the application is trying to load it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind IIS copies
Run:
where /r %windir%System32inetsrv infocomm.dll
To search the 32-bit IIS directory on a 64-bit installation, run:
where /r %windir%SysWOW64inetsrv infocomm.dll
A legitimate IIS copy should normally be under an IIS directory inside %windir%, not in Downloads, Temp, a random application folder, or a directory created by a suspicious installer. An unexpected location is not proof of malware, but it requires signature and process-context checks.
Inspect version and signature
In PowerShell, run:
Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32inetsrvinfocomm.dll" |
Select-Object FullName,Length,VersionInfo
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32inetsrvinfocomm.dll"
Check that:
Statusreports a valid signature;- the signer is Microsoft;
- the path is the expected IIS directory;
- the architecture matches the process and IIS installation;
- the version is appropriate for the installed Windows build.
Do not treat an old version number from a third-party file database as a universal target. Windows servicing determines the correct file for the installed build.
Understand 32-bit and 64-bit differences
A 32-bit application may load 32-bit dependencies even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Conversely, IIS may use 64-bit components for a 64-bit worker process. Do not replace one architecture with the other.

Repairing IIS through Windows is safer than manually selecting an x86 or x64 DLL.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or incorrectly detected file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries around the time the error began.
- Check the reported file path and detection name.
- Restore the file only if it is in the legitimate IIS directory and has a valid Microsoft signature.
- If the path is unexpected, leave the item quarantined and run a full scan.
- Repair or reinstall IIS instead of extracting the quarantined file manually.
Microsoft explains this process in Protection history in Windows Security.
If corporate antivirus or endpoint protection immediately removes the repaired file, ask the administrator to review the detection and policy. Do not create a broad exclusion for the entire Windows directory.
Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
A failed feature installation or interrupted Windows update can leave IIS incomplete.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Windows Update again until no restart is pending.
- Retry the IIS feature installation.
If the problem began immediately after an update, open Settings → Windows Update → Update history and record the affected update. Use Windows recovery options only after confirming the timing and ensuring you have administrator access. Microsoft documents available recovery paths in its Windows recovery options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Update related drivers only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal owner of infocomm.dll. Do not update drivers simply because a DLL error appeared. Consider this path only when the failing application is hardware-related and Event Viewer identifies a device, service, or driver failure alongside the IIS or application error.

Fix 8: Use System Restore or Windows repair
Use recovery tools when IIS repair, DISM, SFC, and application reinstall have not resolved the issue, especially if the failure followed system cleanup, malware, a failed update, or a major configuration change.
System Restore
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test IIS and the affected application.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal documents. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process and limitations.
If no restore point exists, or the restore fails, use Windows repair or an in-place repair installation appropriate for the installed edition and build. Back up important data first.
What not to do
Do not download infocomm.dll from a DLL website
A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible servicing level, or a modified file. Even a genuine copy may not match the Windows build or IIS metadata. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory does not install IIS.
Use Windows Features, DISM, Server Manager, Windows Update, or the affected application’s official installer instead.
Do not register it with regsvr32
infocomm.dll is an IIS implementation DLL, not a typical COM or ActiveX library. Running:
regsvr32 infocomm.dll
is generally irrelevant and may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation applies when a DLL exposes the required registration entry point. Registering this file does not install IIS or restore Windows servicing information.
Do not copy a historical version
An old file-table entry is not a repair package. Do not substitute an x86 DLL for an x64 installation, or use a file taken from another Windows release. Let Windows select the matching component.
Frequently asked questions
Is infocomm.dll a Windows file?
It is a Microsoft file supplied with the optional Internet Information Services feature. It is part of Windows IIS, but it is not present on every Windows computer because IIS is not installed by default everywhere.
Is infocomm.dll a virus?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify the path, Microsoft signature, version information, and process that requested it. A signed copy under the IIS directory is consistent with the legitimate component. An unsigned copy in an application or temporary directory needs further investigation.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable or .NET?
Not based on this filename alone. infocomm.dll belongs to IIS. Install or repair Visual C++ or .NET only when the affected application’s official requirements or a separate error specifically identifies them.
Why is the file missing if I never use IIS?
A third-party application may incorrectly depend on an IIS component, or an old installer may have left a private dependency. Repair the application first if IIS is not part of your setup. Do not enable IIS solely because an untrusted program requests a DLL without checking its vendor documentation.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the DLL exists?
The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, the process may be using the wrong architecture, or the application may be searching the wrong directory. Check the full path, process architecture, Event Viewer, IIS installation state, and application repair options.
Will SFC always restore infocomm.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files when the component store and repair sources are usable. It does not repair an application’s private dependency, and it cannot fix every IIS installation problem. Run DISM first, then SFC, and reinstall or re-enable IIS when appropriate.
What is the safest fix?
When IIS is involved, re-enable or reinstall IIS through Windows Features, DISM, or Server Manager. When only one third-party application fails, repair or reinstall that application from its official vendor. Avoid standalone DLL downloads and unnecessary registration commands.
