Yes—you can install Steam on the D: drive. However, most Windows users do not need to move the Steam client itself. The safest solution for a nearly full C: drive is usually to keep Steam on C:, create a Steam Library on D:, and move or install games there.
Steam’s current library tools are under Steam → Settings → Storage. This lets you add a D: library, make it the default location for new games, and move existing games without downloading them again in most cases.
First, decide what you want to move

“Steam installed on D:” can mean several different things. The client, game library, saves, caches, screenshots, and settings are not necessarily stored in one location.

The Steam client is usually much smaller than a library of installed games. If your objective is to reclaim the most space with the least risk, move the games rather than the client.

- Open Steam.
- Select Steam → Settings.
- Open Storage.
- Select the + button to add a library location.
- Choose a folder on D:, such as
D:SteamLibrary. - Set the D: library as the default installation location if Steam shows that option.
When installing a new game, confirm that the D: library is selected. Adding a library does not automatically move games that are already installed on C:.
Steam’s current support instructions are documented in Valve’s guide to moving a Steam installation and games. Steam’s labels and interface can change with client updates; the workflow above reflects the current Storage path documented by Valve.
Move existing games from C: to D:
Create the D: library before moving anything. Then:
- Go to Steam → Settings → Storage.
- Select the drive or library containing the game.
- Select the game or games you want to move.
- Choose Move.
- Select the D: library as the destination.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before launching the game.
Use Steam’s built-in move function as your first choice. Do not casually drag a game folder in File Explorer while Steam is running: Steam’s library metadata may no longer match the files on disk.
Moving a game does not mean moving only its desktop shortcut. A shortcut does not reclaim storage; the actual game files must be transferred through Steam.

Can you install Steam directly on D:?
For a fresh installation, download Steam from Steam’s official download page, not from a third-party installer site. Start the installer and choose a custom destination on D: if the current installer offers a destination-selection step.
Installer screens and button labels can change, so do not rely on a fixed sequence of screenshots. If the installer does not offer a destination choice, install Steam normally and use Steam → Settings → Storage to place games on D:. This achieves the main space-saving benefit without moving the client.

Moving the entire client is possible, but it is more sensitive than moving individual games. Before starting, make sure you know your Steam account name and password and can access the account’s current email address. Back up the steamapps folder first.
The default installation folder is normally:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamValve’s official procedure is:
- Exit Steam completely.
- Open the existing Steam folder.
- Remove everything except
steamapps,userdata, andsteam.exe. - Move the remaining Steam folder to a destination such as
D:GamesSteam. - Launch
steam.exefrom the new D: location. - Sign in if prompted and allow Steam to update.
- Verify installed games if Steam requests it or games do not launch correctly.
Preserving steamapps keeps the game library, while userdata contains important Steam user data. Steam says future content will download into the new installation’s steamapps directory.
If the full move fails
Exit Steam and temporarily move the new installation’s steamapps folder to the desktop. Uninstall Steam normally through Windows, reinstall it to the desired D: location, then move steamapps back into the new Steam folder. Start Steam, sign in, and verify the games.

This fallback removes old installation settings from the Windows Registry. Do not attempt it without a backup of your game library and local saves.
Make Steam recognize games already on D:
If the game files are already on D: but Steam displays Install, the library root may not be registered correctly, the drive letter may have changed, or the library metadata may be missing.
- Open Steam → Settings → Storage.
- Choose the option to add another drive or library location.
- Select the existing Steam Library folder on D:, not merely an arbitrary subfolder.
- Allow Steam to scan the library.
- If the game still shows Install, begin installation and select that same D: library.
- Steam may discover the existing files instead of downloading the entire game.
- Verify the game files if Steam reports a problem.
Recognition is not guaranteed. Steam may download some or all data if the library metadata is missing, the folder structure is wrong, files are incomplete, or the game was copied from another computer. A typical library has the game files beneath a library root such as D:SteamLibrarysteamappscommon and uses the associated metadata in steamapps.
What remains on C:?
Moving Steam or its games to D: does not relocate every Steam-related file. Some data may remain on C:, including:
- Windows user-profile data.
- Game saves in
DocumentsorAppData. - Shader caches.
- Screenshots and recordings, depending on the game and configuration.
- Temporary downloads and Windows installer data.
- Redistributables, anti-cheat components, other launchers, and game-specific files.
Back up saves separately
Steam Cloud can synchronize supported saves, but it does not cover every game or every save location. Valve notes that many third-party saves and profiles may be in:

C:Users<username>DocumentsThese are possibilities, not universal Steam locations. Developers choose where individual games store saves. Back up important saves before moving Steam, reinstalling it, or changing Windows installations.
Internal versus external D: drives
Internal SSD or hard drive
An internal D: drive is the normal use case. Games on an internal SSD generally load faster than games on a hard disk, while moving them to an HDD can save SSD space at the cost of longer loading times. The drive must remain connected and keep the same drive letter for Steam to find the library reliably.
External USB drive
External storage may work, but Valve does not recommend installing Steam on an external hard drive because of possible performance problems. An external drive also introduces risks such as accidental disconnection, drive-letter changes, USB sleep behavior, and performance that depends on the drive, enclosure, and USB connection.
Prefer an internal drive when possible. Do not treat an external installation as universally unusable, but do keep Steam and games closed before disconnecting the drive.
Troubleshooting
D: does not appear in Steam
- Confirm that the drive is visible and mounted in File Explorer.
- Check that it has enough free space for the game and updates.
- Make sure the library folder is writable.
- Check whether the drive is disconnecting or disappearing.
- If its letter changed, restore the original letter in Windows Disk Management, then reconnect the library in Steam.
Steam downloads the game again
Steam may not find the app manifest, the game may be in the wrong directory level, or files may be incomplete or damaged. Steam can reuse existing files, but a zero-download recovery is not guaranteed. Let it verify the files and download whatever is missing.

The game fails to launch
- Launch it from Steam rather than an old desktop shortcut.
- Verify the game files.
- Repair or reinstall a required launcher or anti-cheat component if prompted.
- Confirm that D: is connected and stable.
- Check for game-specific files or dependencies that remained on C:.
Saves disappeared
Stop playing until you locate the original saves; continued play can create conflicts or overwrite files. Check Steam Cloud, Documents, and the relevant AppData folders, and confirm that you signed into the correct Steam account.
D: disappeared or changed drive letter
Steam libraries are path-dependent. Restore the original drive letter or re-add the library in Storage rather than moving the files again.
Avoid changing partitions, merging drives, using registry edits, or creating symbolic links as a first-line fix. A separate Steam Library is normally sufficient.

For most Windows users, leave the Steam client on C:, create D:SteamLibrary, make it the default library, and move games through Steam → Settings → Storage. Move the entire Steam installation to D: only when you have a specific reason, and back up steamapps and local saves first.
