For gaming, a GeForce GT 1030 with GDDR5 is generally faster than Intel HD Graphics 630. It is a modest upgrade for older or lightweight games—not a modern AAA card. HD 630 is the better choice if your games are undemanding and you want to avoid buying and installing a graphics card. Most importantly, do not assume every GT 1030 is the same: some use much slower DDR4 memory.
Quick comparison
| Feature | Intel HD Graphics 630 | GeForce GT 1030 |
|---|---|---|
| GPU type | Integrated into the processor | Discrete add-in card |
| Graphics memory | Uses shared system RAM; it has no dedicated VRAM in the same sense as a graphics card | Typically 2GB of dedicated memory; board versions use GDDR5 or DDR4 |
| Gaming role | Basic and lightweight games, with results sensitive to CPU and RAM configuration | Entry-level gaming, especially the GDDR5 version; best suited to older or less demanding games |
| Installation and power | No separate graphics card to install | Requires a compatible PCIe slot, case clearance, and working system power; most models do not need a separate PCIe power connector |
| Best fit | Office use, video playback, and light gaming without extra hardware | A low-cost gaming or display upgrade for a compatible older PC |
The GT 1030 GDDR5 is the gaming winner, but the gap depends on the game, CPU, RAM, resolution, drivers, and card model. Benchmark comparisons support the broad ranking, not a guaranteed frame rate for your PC (PassMark comparison; Notebookcheck comparison).
Check which graphics hardware you mean
HD 630 is not UHD 630
Intel HD Graphics 630 is found in a range of processors, notably some 6th- and 7th-generation Intel systems. Its clocks and sustained performance depend on the exact processor and platform. For example, Intel’s 7th-generation desktop Core i7 chart lists HD 630 on the i7-7700, i7-7700K, and i7-7700T, with a graphics frequency range of 350–1150 MHz; those CPUs do not have identical power limits or processor performance (Intel processor comparison chart).
UHD Graphics 630 is a different, later product name used in many 8th- through 10th-generation desktop processors. Do not use a UHD 630 benchmark as if it were an HD 630 result; Intel lists the two separately in its product comparison.

GT 1030 GDDR5 is not GT 1030 DDR4
Both versions may be sold as a 2GB GeForce GT 1030, but memory capacity does not tell you the memory type or its bandwidth. Look for GDDR5 in the exact model specifications. TechSpot measured the GDDR5 card ahead of the DDR4 version by 122% in one 1080p comparison; that is a result from a particular test, not a universal performance multiplier (TechSpot’s DDR4 testing). GamersNexus also cautions against treating results for the GDDR5 model as representative of DDR4 (GT 1030 DDR4 and GDDR5 testing).
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
HD 630 is an integrated GPU: it shares the system’s memory with the CPU. Its gaming performance can change noticeably with memory speed and channel configuration, and laptop power limits and cooling can also affect sustained clocks. A Windows report of shared or reserved graphics memory does not mean the GPU has that amount of dedicated VRAM.
The GT 1030 is a low-end discrete GPU based on NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture, with dedicated memory and models in both standard and low-profile designs. NVIDIA presents the product as an entry-level graphics upgrade with DirectX 12 support (NVIDIA GT 1030 product page; NVIDIA features). Board details vary: MSI’s example 2GB GDDR5 model has a PCI Express 3.0 x16 physical connector operating electrically at x4, while other manufacturers offer different coolers, outputs, clocks, and dimensions (MSI specifications).
Intel’s current graphics API table lists HD 630 support for DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.6, OpenCL 2.1, and Vulkan 1.3 (Intel API support table). API support means the hardware and driver expose an interface; it does not guarantee that a demanding game will run well. The same caution applies to the GT 1030.

What to expect in games
Lightweight and older games
HD 630 can be adequate for some older titles and lightweight games, particularly at reduced settings. The GT 1030 GDDR5 usually provides more headroom and is the more sensible of the two for casual gaming, but an older CPU can still limit performance. Do not take a game merely launching as evidence that it will maintain smooth frame times.
Older, more demanding games
For older AAA games, the GT 1030 GDDR5 is generally the practical option between these two, often with reduced quality settings and, where necessary, a 720p target or reduced-quality 1080p. HD 630 may need lower resolution and more aggressive compromises. The DDR4 version has less headroom and should not be judged by GDDR5 benchmarks.
Modern demanding games
Neither GPU is a good recommendation for modern demanding AAA games. The GT 1030 is faster for 3D gaming, but it remains an entry-level card with only 2GB on typical retail models. Technical support for a graphics API is not a promise of playable performance in current games.
There is no useful universal FPS figure for this comparison without specifying the PC and test conditions. Results change with CPU model, RAM amount and channel mode, memory speed, GT 1030 memory type, driver, game version, resolution, settings, thermals, and background activity. PassMark’s comparison aggregates submitted PerformanceTest results, so use it as broad ranking evidence rather than a forecast for an individual game.

Why an HD 630 system may perform worse than expected
System memory configuration
Because HD 630 shares system RAM, a single memory module can constrain graphics performance compared with an otherwise similar dual-channel setup. Check how many sticks are installed, whether memory is running in dual-channel mode, and its speed. If your PC has one stick, adding a compatible matched module may be a more sensible first step than buying a GT 1030—especially if you mainly play lightweight games.
Processor and platform
HD 630 is not a standalone card with one fixed clock or power envelope. Desktop processors, low-power laptops, and different cooling systems can sustain different graphics performance. A laptop comparison against a desktop GT 1030 is particularly dependent on the laptop’s CPU, memory, firmware, and thermal limits.
Should you buy a GT 1030?
| Your situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| Your HD 630 PC is used for office work, ordinary video playback, or light games that already run acceptably | Keep HD 630; there is no reason to add a card solely for basic use. |
| You want a modest improvement for older or lightweight games | Consider a GT 1030 only after confirming it is GDDR5 and its price makes sense. |
| The listing says only “2GB GT 1030” | Wait until the exact memory type is confirmed; do not infer GDDR5 from the name or capacity. |
| Your PC is a slim office system | Check for a low-profile GDDR5 model, the correct bracket, card dimensions, and display outputs. |
| You want modern AAA gaming | Skip both and look for a newer, more capable GPU that fits your system. |
| Your main need is video encoding or editing | Check the exact application’s supported hardware path before choosing; Intel Quick Sync may help in supported workflows, while an NVIDIA path is application-dependent. |
| You want a quiet system | A fanless GT 1030 can avoid fan noise, but needs case airflow to manage sustained heat. |
GT 1030 value is price- and condition-dependent, especially because it is an older card. Compare the exact GDDR5 model with newer entry-level options and used cards from higher tiers, accounting for power, size, warranty, and condition. No current price is assumed here.

Both GPUs can support hardware-accelerated video playback when the operating system, driver, and application use a compatible decode path. Codec support and protected streaming requirements are platform-dependent, and video decoding is separate from 3D gaming performance.

Intel Quick Sync can be useful for supported encoding workflows on HD 630 systems. Conversely, a GT 1030 may help when an application supports its NVIDIA GPU path, but check whether the software requires CUDA, a particular compute capability or driver, and more than 2GB of VRAM. A faster gaming result does not mean every editing export will be faster.
Emulators also vary: some lean mainly on CPU performance, while others can benefit from a discrete GPU. Check the emulator and game requirements rather than assuming that adding the GT 1030 will remove a CPU or compatibility limit.
Check compatibility before installing
- Memory type: Confirm GDDR5 in the exact model number and manufacturer’s specifications.
- Case fit: Check card height, length, cooler clearance, and whether a low-profile bracket is required.
- Outputs: Confirm the card has an output that matches your monitor or a suitable adapter.
- Power and slot: Most GT 1030 models do not have a separate PCIe power connector, but the PC still needs a compatible, functioning power supply and motherboard slot.
- Firmware: Very old or proprietary OEM systems may have boot-compatibility or UEFI issues; check the system manufacturer’s documentation.
- Cooling: A passive card relies on case airflow, especially during sustained gaming in a small case.
- Software: Check current operating-system and driver support for the exact card and system before purchase.
Install and verify the card
- With the PC powered off and unplugged, install the card in the compatible PCIe slot, using the correct bracket and securing the card as the case requires.
- Connect the monitor to an output on the GT 1030, not the motherboard’s video output. Start the system and confirm it displays correctly.
- Download the appropriate driver for the card and operating system from NVIDIA’s GT 1030 page or its driver support pages, install it, and reboot.
- Confirm the adapter appears in Windows Device Manager. In a game, verify that the GT 1030 is selected if the game exposes a graphics-device choice.
Troubleshoot common problems
Performance is much lower than expected
- Check that the card is GDDR5, not DDR4.
- Confirm the monitor is connected to the card and the game is using it.
- Check the driver, temperatures, and case airflow; sustained heat can reduce clocks.
- Consider CPU limits and, for HD 630 comparisons, whether system memory is single-channel.
The PC starts but the screen is blank
Power off and reconnect the monitor to the card; try another card output or cable. If the system supports it, boot using integrated graphics to check firmware settings and driver installation. Update motherboard firmware only by following the system manufacturer’s documented procedure. If the PC will not boot with the card installed, remove it and verify BIOS compatibility before trying again.
A passive card becomes unstable during gaming
Check case airflow and card temperatures. Fanless cooling is quiet, but a poorly ventilated case can lead to reduced clocks or instability under sustained load.
