Intel’s Lunar Lake gaming handhelds really did get faster through software updates—but the “up to 33%” figure is a best-case result, not a universal FPS increase. The improvement came from two related changes: Intel’s Arc graphics-driver power-management optimization and an MSI Center M correction that restored a useful difference between sustained and boost power limits. The strongest evidence comes from the MSI Claw 7 AI+ and Claw 8 AI+ running around 17W.

The short version

Lunar Lake refers to Intel’s Core Ultra 200V mobile platform, whose integrated graphics are branded Arc 140V or Arc 130V and use the Xe2 architecture. In April 2025, Intel released graphics driver 32.0.101.6734 WHQL, which introduced power-management optimizations focused initially on handhelds operating at or below 17W.

Intel said the update could improve GPU frequency, average frame rates, 1% lows, and frame pacing across nine tested games. A later MSI software correction addressed an additional problem: the original MSI Center M configuration reportedly set PL1 and PL2 to the same value. Independent testing subsequently found gains approaching 30% in some games, while ETA PRIME reported a 33% improvement in Forza Horizon 5 at the same nominal power preset.

That does not mean Lunar Lake’s graphics hardware became 33% faster everywhere. The result depends on the handheld, driver, BIOS, control software, power profile, game, cooling, and test method.

Intel’s later 32.0.101.6874 WHQL release, dated May 30, 2025, stated that the handheld power-management optimization was being made available to all Core Ultra 200V devices. As of August 2026, those versions are historically important rather than current-version recommendations; owners should use the latest Intel and OEM packages validated for their specific system.

What Lunar Lake is—and which devices this story covers

Lunar Lake is Intel’s codename for the Core Ultra Series 2 mobile platform, marketed as Core Ultra 200V. Its relevant integrated GPUs include the Arc 140V and Arc 130V, based on Intel’s Xe2 graphics architecture. This is an integrated-GPU platform that shares system memory and operates within a constrained mobile power and thermal envelope.

The update story primarily concerns Windows gaming handhelds, particularly:

  • MSI Claw 8 AI+
  • MSI Claw 7 AI+
  • Other Core Ultra 200V systems using Arc 140V or Arc 130V graphics

It should not be read as a promise that every Intel laptop with an Arc-branded integrated GPU receives the same uplift. Laptops can use different memory configurations, cooling systems, BIOS power tables, display resolutions, fan curves, and vendor power modes.

Why early Lunar Lake handheld reviews looked underwhelming

Early performance results did not necessarily represent Lunar Lake’s best low-power behavior. The platform was affected by driver maturity and by how the handheld’s power controller distributed its limited package power between the CPU and GPU.

On the MSI Claw, the original control software reportedly set the sustained and short-term power limits to the same number. That is important because the two limits serve different purposes:

  • PL1 is the longer-term or sustained package-power target.
  • PL2 is the short-term boost ceiling used when the processor needs extra power for bursts.

When PL1 and PL2 are identical, the system may lose useful boost headroom. The problem was therefore not simply that the handheld needed more wattage. It was that the available power budget was not always being used at the right time or under the right control logic.

What Intel’s graphics-driver update changed

Intel’s 32.0.101.6734 WHQL driver, released April 8, 2025, introduced a power-management optimization for Lunar Lake handheld gaming devices. Intel’s explanation of the update emphasized low-power operation, especially systems configured at or below 17W.

According to Intel’s April 2025 overview, the update was intended to:

  • Raise average GPU frequency when appropriate
  • Coordinate CPU and GPU power more effectively
  • Improve average FPS
  • Improve 1% lows and frame pacing
  • Deliver better performance in a nine-game test set

Intel’s reported figures were not a universal 33% promise. Secondary coverage of Intel’s internal results described gains of up to approximately 10% in average FPS and up to roughly 25% in 1% low performance in some tested scenarios. Those numbers should be treated as Intel’s own results, not as independently reproduced averages across all Lunar Lake games.

The MSI power-limit correction was the other half of the fix

A graphics driver alone does not control every aspect of a handheld’s power profile. MSI Center M also needed an update to correct the way PL1 and PL2 were configured.

As reported by HotHardware, the updated MSI behavior required PL2 to be at least 1W higher than PL1. The same report said Intel recommended allowing PL2 to reach 37W for best performance in the relevant configuration.

That 37W figure must not be interpreted as a continuously sustainable gaming power level or as a universal recommendation for every Lunar Lake device. Actual behavior depends on the handheld’s cooling system, firmware, charger, battery state, fan curve, and sustained PL1 setting. A higher PL2 can help with short bursts, but it can also increase fan noise, heat, and battery drain.

The practical explanation is straightforward: the driver improves power coordination, while the OEM software restores useful boost headroom. At a fixed nominal profile, the system can still run faster if it gives the GPU power at the moments it needs it, reduces unnecessary CPU power use in GPU-limited games, and avoids an overly restrictive PL1/PL2 arrangement. Intel has described the observed behavior, but the complete low-level causal breakdown has not been publicly established for every workload.

Where the 33% figure came from

The headline number comes from a specific independent test, not from an official universal Intel guarantee. ETA PRIME reported a 33% improvement in Forza Horizon 5 on an updated MSI Claw 8 AI+ configuration at the same power preset. HotHardware covered that result and also reported that TechPowerUp’s retesting found gains approaching 30% in some games.

Figure What it represents How to interpret it
Up to 10% average FPS Intel-reported results summarized by secondary coverage A game- and configuration-specific internal result, not a universal average
Up to 25% better 1% lows Intel-reported frame-time improvement in some scenarios Potentially more important to smoothness than average FPS, but still workload-dependent
Nearly 30% Results reported from TechPowerUp retesting Seen in some games and configurations, not across every title
33% ETA PRIME’s reported Forza Horizon 5 result A best-case single-game result after the driver and power-limit changes

The 33% result combines the effects of multiple changes and should not be described as a 33% architectural improvement. Installing a graphics driver may not reproduce the complete result if the handheld still has outdated BIOS firmware or OEM power-profile software.

Why the same power preset could produce higher FPS

“The same power preset” does not necessarily mean identical total system power. A handheld’s 17W label might describe processor package power, platform power, or a vendor-defined operating mode. Testers must identify what the number measures before treating two results as equivalent.

Even with the same nominal limit, performance can improve when:

  • The GPU receives power during demanding rendering intervals.
  • CPU power is reduced when the game is primarily GPU-limited.
  • Boost clocks respond correctly to short-term demand.
  • Frame-time spikes are reduced.
  • The controller avoids unnecessary oscillation between power states.

This is why average FPS alone is insufficient. A smaller average uplift with much better 1% lows may feel smoother than a larger average increase accompanied by stutter.

2. Update the OEM software and firmware

On an MSI Claw, update MSI Center M, then check MSI’s support pages for BIOS and device-firmware updates. Reboot after installation and check the available power profiles again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This step matters because a generic Intel graphics package does not necessarily change the PL1/PL2 behavior controlled by MSI’s software or firmware.

3. Install the appropriate graphics driver

Use the OEM graphics package first when the manufacturer supplies a customized driver. If it is outdated, compare it with the current package and release notes in Intel’s Download Center.

The historically important version is 32.0.101.6734, followed by 32.0.101.6874. In 2026, do not deliberately install those older versions simply because they appear in performance coverage; use the current package validated for your handheld unless troubleshooting requires a rollback.

4. Verify the power limits

If the device exposes separate controls, confirm that PL2 is not equal to PL1. Keep PL2 at least 1W above PL1 where the OEM software requires that arrangement. Use a 37W PL2 only when the device’s firmware, cooling, charger, and vendor software support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not force hidden power controls with unofficial utilities unless you understand the thermal, stability, battery, and warranty risks. If the controls are locked, that may reflect an intentional OEM safety or firmware limit.

5. Retest consistently

For a meaningful before-and-after comparison, keep the following constant:

  • Game version and graphics preset
  • Resolution and upscaler settings
  • XeSS or other frame-generation settings
  • Power profile and Windows power mode
  • AC or battery operation
  • BIOS and driver versions
  • Ambient conditions and warm-up time

Record average FPS and 1% lows, or preferably frame-time percentiles. If frame generation is enabled, report it separately from native rendering performance.

What owners should expect in real use

The largest gains are most plausible when a system is operating near 17W, was affected by the old equal-PL1/PL2 behavior, and is running a game that benefits from the driver’s power-management changes. Results may be smaller at higher wattages, where the original configuration was less restrictive or where thermal limits become dominant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long sessions can also tell a different story from short benchmark runs. A higher PL2 may improve a burst of activity, but it does not mean the handheld can sustain that power indefinitely. Cooling capacity, fan behavior, battery mode, and the sustained PL1 target determine what happens after the device heats up.

For serious validation, allow at least a warm-up period and compare a sustained gameplay run rather than only the first benchmark pass. Track performance at the beginning and end, along with fan noise, surface temperature, battery drain, and any frequency or power oscillation.

Driver regressions and separate improvements

Intel’s release notes continue to list game-specific issues, including possible crashes, flickering, or corruption under particular conditions. The update should therefore be treated as a compatibility change, not an automatic upgrade with no downside. For example, the 32.0.101.6874 notes listed a possible Overwatch 2 crash under certain conditions and described an NPU-driver mitigation.

Before updating, create a restore point, record the existing driver version, and retain the previous installer if possible. If a favorite game becomes unstable, roll back the graphics driver. For boot, display-output, or firmware-related power problems, use the handheld manufacturer’s recovery and support process rather than repeatedly forcing generic packages.

Later coverage also discussed an increase in the maximum memory allocation available to integrated Arc graphics—from 50% to as much as 57% on relevant Core Ultra product lines. That is a separate graphics-stack or platform improvement and should not automatically be folded into the 33% figure unless a test explicitly included it.

Do XeSS and frame generation explain the gains?

Intel’s XeSS technologies can increase displayed frame rates through upscaling and frame generation, but those features are not the same as higher native GPU throughput. They can improve perceived smoothness while introducing trade-offs involving image quality, latency, and artifacts.

Any comparison should state whether it uses native rendering, XeSS Super Resolution, XeSS Frame Generation, another upscaler, or a combination. Native FPS in one test cannot fairly be compared with generated-frame FPS in another.

Does this make Lunar Lake faster than AMD handhelds?

It makes the MSI Claw considerably more competitive than early reviews suggested, and later retesting reported that the corrected Claw 8 AI+ reached the top of a particular tested handheld suite. That is useful evidence, but it is not proof of universal platform superiority.

Handheld results depend heavily on wattage, memory, cooling, display resolution, game engine, and the meaning of “same power.” A later comparison reported AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme ahead of the Core Ultra 7 258V at 17W by approximately 8.5%, with the gap narrowing to about 6% at 30W. That counterexample shows why one corrected MSI result cannot establish that Lunar Lake wins every game or every power level.

Comparisons also need a date boundary. By August 2026, newer Intel and AMD handheld platforms may be available. The Lunar Lake updates correct an important 2025 performance story; they do not make the platform permanently faster than every newer alternative.

Should you buy a Lunar Lake handheld in 2026?

Existing MSI Claw owners should update the BIOS, MSI Center M, and graphics driver before deciding that the hardware is too slow. The original launch results may have reflected immature drivers and an inefficient power-limit configuration.

Prospective buyers should not use the 33% figure as a reason to purchase blindly. Compare current price, sustained—not just burst—performance, battery life, display and VRR quality, ergonomics, support, firmware cadence, and the availability of newer AMD and Intel handhelds. A discounted Claw may be more attractive after the updates, but the value depends on the current market and on whether its game library benefits from the driver changes.

The most accurate buying conclusion is that Lunar Lake’s handheld performance was materially improved by software, especially at low power. It is a stronger platform than early reviews indicated, but it remains an integrated-GPU design constrained by shared memory, cooling, game optimization, and the device’s sustained power envelope.
