Intel announced XeSS 2 on December 3, 2024, alongside its Arc B-Series graphics cards. The suite combines AI upscaling, AI frame generation and Xe Low Latency (XeLL); it is not simply a frame-generation feature. XeSS 2 is no longer Intel’s newest generation: Intel’s developer materials now describe XeSS 3, which adds Multi-Frame Generation. Intel’s XeSS overview has the current generation information.
What Intel XeSS 2 includes
XeSS 2 brings together three technologies that do different jobs. A game may support one without supporting the others, so a menu item labeled “XeSS” does not by itself confirm that frame generation or XeLL is available.
| Feature | What it does | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| XeSS Super Resolution (XeSS-SR) | Reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render using AI-based upscaling. | Can improve performance by reducing the resolution the GPU must render, with image quality depending on the game, preset and motion. |
| XeSS Frame Generation (XeSS-FG) | Uses optical-flow information, game-provided motion vectors, motion-vector reprojection and AI interpolation to create intermediate frames. | Raises displayed frame cadence and can make motion look smoother, but generated frames are not additional game-simulation updates. |
| Xe Low Latency (XeLL) | Uses game-engine integration and frame-pacing controls to reduce input-to-display delay. | Designed to address responsiveness concerns, particularly when frame generation is enabled; it can also be offered separately. |
Intel’s XeSS 2 whitepaper describes the three-part suite. The key distinction is that upscaling changes how the rendered image is produced, frame generation adds interpolated display frames, and XeLL targets latency.
Why displayed FPS is not the same as game performance
Frame generation inserts images between frames the game rendered conventionally. Those extra images can make camera movement appear smoother, but they do not mean the CPU and GPU are simulating the game world, processing input or rendering new gameplay frames at that same rate. Controls can therefore feel closer to the underlying rendered frame rate than the displayed FPS suggests.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When comparing results, look for both base or rendered FPS and displayed FPS, as well as latency measurements. Intel’s launch driver notes warn that ordinary FPS counters can be misleading with frame generation and recommend telemetry that distinguishes displayed FPS, displayed time and display latency. Intel’s December 2024 driver release notes document that measurement caveat.
XeLL matters because frame generation can add processing and queueing delay. It is intended to reduce latency through game integration, but it does not turn generated frames into new simulation updates or guarantee a particular response time. Its effect depends on the game’s implementation and frame pacing.
Which GPUs and APIs support the features?
The full XeSS 2 suite is not universally available on every GPU that can run XeSS upscaling. Intel’s support distinctions are especially important for buyers using non-Intel cards.

| Component | Intel-documented support | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| XeSS-SR | Intel Xe graphics platforms and compatible cross-vendor GPUs meeting the required Shader Model capability. | This is the broadly portable part of XeSS 2. Compatibility does not imply support for FG or XeLL. |
| XeSS-FG | Intel Arc GPUs with XMX hardware acceleration. | Do not assume an Nvidia or AMD GPU gets XeSS-FG merely because it can run XeSS-SR. |
| XeLL | Intel Xe-XPG graphics platforms and newer, according to Intel’s whitepaper. | Native game integration and the specific game’s implementation matter. |
Intel documents XeSS-SR for DirectX 11, DirectX 12 and Vulkan. XeSS-FG and XeLL APIs are designed for DirectX 12. Separately, Intel’s driver-level Low Latency Mode supports DirectX 11 and DirectX 9 games; that driver control is not equivalent to native XeLL integration in a game.
For the XeSS-FG implementation covered by Intel’s developer guide, the stated minimum is graphics driver 32.0.101.6252. The guide also calls for XeLL SDK version 1.3.0 or later for XeSS-FG integration. These are developer implementation requirements, not proof that any game or GPU exposes the feature. See Intel’s XeSS-FG developer guide and XeLL developer guide.
For compatible DirectX 11 and DirectX 9 games, Intel’s driver-level setting is in Intel Graphics Software at Graphics → Frame Delivery → Low Latency Mode. Its availability should not be mistaken for native XeLL support or XeSS-FG support.

What Intel’s 3.9× FPS claim means
Intel advertised up to a 3.9× FPS increase in F1 24 at 1440p Ultra on an Arc B580, with XeSS Ultra Performance mode and the XeSS 2 technologies enabled. This is Intel’s result for that specific test configuration, not a performance guarantee across games or systems. Intel’s Arc B-Series announcement provides the claim and setup.

Ultra Performance mode renders internally at a particularly low resolution before upscaling. And because the result includes generated frames, the displayed FPS multiplier should not be read as a comparable increase in rendered frames, simulation throughput or control responsiveness. The useful question is whether the game looks and feels better at the base frame rate you can sustain.
Game support: check the feature, not just the name
Intel said XeSS 2 launched with a limited selection of games and reported 19 games offering the suite by May 2025; examples included Assassin’s Creed Shadows. That dated count is not a current, all-games compatibility guarantee. Support changes as games and drivers are updated, and titles may offer different combinations of SR, FG and XeLL.

- XeSS-SR only: upscaling may be available without frame generation or XeLL.
- XeSS 2 integration: check whether the title supports FG and XeLL as well as SR; implementations can expose these as separate settings.
- Later-generation or driver features: XeSS 3 and driver overrides are not the same thing as a game’s original native XeSS 2 support.
Use Intel’s XeSS gaming page and supported-games guidance to check current availability. Intel also reported additional adoption in its May 2025 update. Verify the individual feature in the game’s settings or patch notes rather than treating every XeSS listing as full-suite support.

Interpolation relies on motion information to estimate what belongs between rendered frames. If motion vectors are incomplete or a scene changes rapidly, generated frames can show ghosting, disocclusion errors, warped objects or artifacts around foliage, particles and interface elements. The result varies by game and implementation; no universal image-quality or latency winner can be established from the feature names alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- More promising fit: an Intel Arc GPU with XMX hardware, a game with native FG and XeLL support, a reasonably high base frame rate, a GPU-limited workload and a high-refresh display.
- Less suitable fit: a very low base frame rate, a CPU-limited game, a title with only SR support, or a competitive game where immediate input response matters more than smoother-looking motion.
- Before enabling it: check whether the game has a known implementation issue, compare the base and displayed frame rates, and judge artifacts during the scenes you actually play.
XeLL is worth considering as a separate option where the game exposes it: latency reduction is not itself frame generation. A native in-game implementation is preferable to forcing an override, which may lack suitable game data or introduce compatibility problems.

XeSS 2 compared with DLSS and FSR
These suites overlap in purpose, but feature names do not guarantee identical hardware access, game support or image quality. The relevant implementation, GPU and game matter more than a brand-level verdict.
| Criterion | Intel XeSS 2 | Nvidia DLSS | AMD FSR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upscaling | XeSS-SR | DLSS Super Resolution | FSR upscaling |
| Frame generation | XeSS-FG | DLSS Frame Generation | FSR Frame Generation |
| Latency technology | XeLL | Reflex and related technologies | Anti-Lag technologies |
| Hardware scope | SR is cross-vendor under Intel’s supported requirements; XeSS-FG is documented for Intel Arc GPUs with XMX acceleration. | Feature availability varies by GPU generation. | Broad hardware orientation, with availability depending on the feature. |
| Practical consideration | Check the smaller, changing adoption footprint and Intel-specific FG acceleration. | Check GPU-generation restrictions for the particular feature and game support. | Image quality and implementation vary by game and feature. |
There is no defensible universal winner without controlled, like-for-like testing. Internal resolution, preset, motion-vector quality, GPU, driver and game implementation all affect the result.
Launch context and buying implications
Intel introduced XeSS 2 with its Arc B-Series, also called Battlemage. The B580 was announced on December 3, 2024, with Intel Limited Edition availability from December 13, 2024, at a $249 starting price. The B570 was announced alongside it, with availability from January 16, 2025, at a $219 starting price. Those are launch MSRP figures, not current retail prices. Intel’s Arc B-Series product page has product information.
For a GPU purchase, treat XeSS 2 as one part of the decision, not a reason by itself to buy a card. Check performance in the games you play, the specific feature support those games offer, and the card’s broader capabilities. Arc B-Series makes the most sense when its overall price and performance suit your needs and your target games can use the Intel features you value; a headline generated-FPS multiplier alone cannot establish that fit.
What to check if XeSS 2 is missing or misbehaving
- Confirm the game supports the feature you want—SR, FG and XeLL are not interchangeable.
- Update the game and Intel graphics driver; the XeSS-FG developer guide specifies driver 32.0.101.6252 or later for its documented implementation.
- For XeSS-FG, verify that the GPU has the required XMX hardware acceleration.
- Use DirectX 12 where the game requires it for XeSS-FG or XeLL.
- Restart the game after changing frame-generation settings, and check its patch notes and Intel’s current supported-games guidance.
- If artifacts, stuttering or crashes occur, test with frame generation disabled to isolate the feature. Avoid assuming an issue documented for Intel’s December 2024 launch driver applies to current drivers.
Intel’s original launch notes listed F1 24 corruption or crashes with XeSS-FG, crashes when changing FG settings during gameplay, stuttering in some configurations, and unsupported fullscreen-exclusive mode invoked with Alt + Enter in that launch implementation. These are dated launch-driver issues, not evidence that every current XeSS 2 installation has those defects. The release notes identify the original context.
