Connect by USB—no Bluetooth pairing is needed—but a compatible game or app must still support controller input, and the cable must carry data as well as power.
What changed—and when
Apple’s 2024 software releases added native USB support for wired Xbox controllers. The change was reported on October 7, 2024, and applies to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 Sequoia (MacRumors’ report). It is a compatibility change, not a new controller, Bluetooth feature, or game-streaming service.
Xbox controllers already had wireless use cases on Apple devices. This change matters when you connect a controller through USB instead. Apple’s general controller-support page lists iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, and macOS Ventura 13 or later for controller features overall; those minimums should not be taken as confirmation that wired Xbox USB support works the same way on those older releases. The specific wired-Xbox change is associated with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and Sequoia.
Connect a wired Xbox controller
Before connecting, use a cable that supports both data and charging. A cable that only supplies power may charge the controller without sending its inputs to the Apple device. Apple describes the USB cable requirement in its controller connection and support instructions.

- Quick In-Game Adjustments Without Interrupting Gameplay: Fine-tune vibration, switch profiles, remap buttons, or adjust volume directly on the controller while gaming. No need to pause the match or open software — perfect for players who constantly switch between FPS, RPG, racing, and multiplayer games.
Mac running macOS Sequoia
- Connect the controller to the Mac by USB, directly or through a suitable data-capable adapter.
- If macOS asks whether to connect “Microsoft Controller” to the Mac, approve the accessory.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Game Controllers and select the detected controller. Apple’s current Game Controllers instructions use this settings path.
- Test the controller in a game or app that supports it.
MacRumors reported that a wired controller appeared in the pane as “Controller” with an Xbox logo. Its report also found that the Identify action did not make the wired controller vibrate; that observation does not establish how every model or later software release behaves.
Which Xbox controllers are covered?
The compatibility change concerns Xbox controllers connected over USB, but it is not a guarantee for every product described as “Xbox-compatible.” An official Xbox controller connected through a USB data cable and some wired Xbox models are relevant examples. Older Xbox 360 controllers and third-party XInput-style gamepads should be treated as model-specific: the available compatibility information does not establish that every generation, clone, or firmware combination works.

Results can depend on the controller’s USB implementation and firmware, the cable and any adapter, the Apple operating-system release, and the app. A wireless USB adapter is also a different setup from plugging the controller itself into USB; do not assume the adapter is supported just because a wired connection is.
Controller recognition is not the same as game support
There are two separate questions: does Apple’s operating system recognize the controller, and does the game or app accept its input? Apple’s Game Controller framework documentation describes the platform’s controller system; individual games and apps still need to implement controller input through that framework or another compatible input system.

As a result, a controller may be detected by macOS yet not work in a particular game, browser, emulator, or streaming client. The app may lack controller support, require it to be enabled in its settings, support only certain input methods, or show incorrect button prompts. A streaming service’s game support and input handling are separate from USB recognition by the operating system.

- Bluetooth listing: A controller connected by USB will not appear as a Bluetooth-paired device on iPhone or iPad. Its absence from that menu is expected for a wired connection.
- Charging-only cables: A cable can fit and charge without carrying controller input. Try a known data-capable cable.
- Every game or app: The app must support controller input; operating-system recognition alone does not add that feature.
- Every controller feature: Apple says support for specific buttons and features—including lights and a controller’s audio jack—varies by controller and app. Do not assume rumble or headset functions will work everywhere.
- Every adapter or hub: An extra connection point can create a power or detection problem. A direct connection is a useful troubleshooting test.
For wireless play instead, put a Bluetooth-capable controller into pairing mode and follow Apple’s separate pairing instructions on its controller support page. A wired-only controller cannot use that route.
Wired or wireless?
| Connection | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB | No Bluetooth pairing or wireless interference; useful for wired-only controllers and players who prefer a direct connection. | Requires a suitable cable and possibly an adapter; restricts movement and adds connectors that can fail. A stable link does not guarantee a particular latency improvement. |
| Bluetooth | More freedom of movement and no cable or Lightning adapter in the play setup; Apple documents wireless pairing. | Requires pairing and a charged controller; wireless interference or pairing issues can occur. Older wired-only controllers are not an option. |
Wired connections can be a practical choice for consistency, but input latency depends on the controller, game, display, cable, and device. There is no measured latency result established here, so do not treat “wired” as a guaranteed performance improvement.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a controller that is not detected
- Install the latest available compatible software for the Apple device, and update controller firmware using the manufacturer’s supported method. Apple recommends keeping device and controller software current when troubleshooting.
- Swap in a known data-capable cable. Do not assume a charging cable carries input data.
- Disconnect hubs or extra adapters and try a direct connection where possible. For a Lightning device, check that the adapter-and-cable combination supports data and provides sufficient power.
- On a Mac, approve the accessory prompt if it appears, then check Apple menu → System Settings → Game Controllers.
- Test in a second controller-compatible game or app. If the controller is listed by the system but one game ignores it, check that game’s input settings and controller support.
