“The program can’t start because iphlpsvc.dll is missing from your computer.” You may instead see “iphlpsvc.dll was not found,” “The specified module could not be found,” or an error saying that the IP Helper service cannot start.
iphlpsvc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component. It belongs to the IP Helper service, not to a game, Visual C++ package, DirectX, or .NET runtime. The safest fix is to repair Windows itself rather than download a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches your problem:
- The file is missing from a Windows system directory: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- The file exists, but IP Helper will not start: inspect the service configuration and dependencies.
- The problem began after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history.
- The problem began after an update, driver installation, or system change: use System Restore.
- A specific application reports the error: repair that application only if it keeps a private copy of the file. Do not replace Windows files with files from the application.
- The error remains after system repairs: use Windows 11’s repair reinstall or installation media.
Do not begin by copying iphlpsvc.dll from another computer. Windows builds, architectures, signatures, dependencies, and system directories must match.

What iphlpsvc.dll does
iphlpsvc.dll is associated with the Windows IP Helper service, whose service name is iphlpsvc. Microsoft describes IP Helper as providing IPv6 transition connectivity through technologies including 6to4, ISATAP, Port Proxy, Teredo, and IP-HTTPS.
The service normally runs under svchost.exe, which loads the service DLL through its ServiceDll configuration. That is why the file normally belongs in a protected Windows system directory rather than beside an application executable.
Do not confuse it with iphlpapi.dll. The latter is the documented IP Helper API library that applications use for network information and management. The two names are similar, but they are different Windows components.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
A pending update can contain repairs for protected system files and servicing components.

- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application or start the IP Helper service again.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If the error returns after restarting, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading the DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the service or application.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. If SFC says it repaired files, restart and test again. If it says some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If DISM cannot find source files, use a matching Windows repair source or continue to the repair-reinstall options below.
When manually comparing DISM and SFC output, it is easy to repeat the same commands without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the primary repair path.

Fix 3: Check the IP Helper service
A “module not found” error does not always mean that iphlpsvc.dll itself is absent. Error 126 can also indicate a missing dependency, incorrect service configuration, or another Windows loading problem.
Check Services
- Press
Win+R. - Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find IP Helper.
- Double-click it.
- Note the Service status and Startup type.
- If the service is stopped, click Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If Windows displays error 126, “The specified module could not be found,” do not immediately replace the DLL. Continue with the component repair steps and inspect the service configuration.

Check from Command Prompt
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
sc query iphlpsvc
sc qc iphlpsvc
sc query shows whether the service is running. sc qc shows its startup configuration and service DLL information. If the configuration looks damaged, do not manually edit the registry based on a guessed path. Use DISM, SFC, System Restore, or a repair installation instead.
IP Helper supports enhanced IPv6-transition connectivity. Many ordinary networks continue to work when it is stopped, but disabling it can remove functionality needed by some networks or applications. Do not disable the service merely to hide the error.

Security software may quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a false detection. It may also block a damaged or modified file.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
iphlpsvc.dllor the IP Helper service. - Confirm the file path, detection name, and time of the event.
Restore a quarantined file only after confirming that the detection is a false positive and the computer is clean. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the device. If you are unsure, leave the file quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Run a full scan if the file appeared in an unexpected application folder, changed after an untrusted installation, or disappeared repeatedly.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a Windows update, driver installation, security-product change, or other identifiable system change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Choose Next.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Choose Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can reverse applications, drivers, and system settings installed after the selected restore point. Test the IP Helper service after Windows starts.
Fix 6: Repair a related network driver only when evidence points to it
A network driver is not a generic fix for iphlpsvc.dll. Use this step only if Device Manager or Event Viewer identifies a driver problem at the same time.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a warning symbol or a device that has disappeared.
- Double-click the affected device and read the Device status message.
- Use Update driver only when Windows identifies an available driver or you have obtained the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
Do not replace iphlpsvc.dll because a network adapter has a warning symbol. Resolve the driver issue separately, then test IP Helper.

Fix 7: Repair or reinstall Windows
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store, escalate without downloading individual DLL files.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 systems:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
In-place installation media repair
If that option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and language. Start the installation from within Windows and choose Keep personal files and apps when offered. Read every selection carefully. A clean installation is different and can remove applications and files.

FAQ
Is iphlpsvc.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows component associated with the Microsoft IP Helper service. It is installed with Windows and normally resides in a protected Windows system directory.
Why does Windows say “module not found” when the file exists?
The message can refer to a missing dependency, damaged component store, incorrect service configuration, permissions problem, or another loading failure. Check sc qc iphlpsvc, Event Viewer, DISM, and SFC rather than replacing the visible file.
Is iphlpsvc.dll the same as iphlpapi.dll?
No. iphlpapi.dll is the documented IP Helper API library used by applications. iphlpsvc.dll is associated with the IP Helper service.
Do Windows 10 and Windows 11 use the same file?
Do not assume that they do. File versions, architecture, and servicing state vary by Windows build. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or matching Microsoft installation media instead of using a historical version list.
What if an application is the only thing reporting the error?
Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer only if it stores its own private component. If the error concerns the Windows IP Helper service, repair Windows instead. Reinstalling an application does not replace a protected Windows system component safely.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I disable IP Helper?
You can inspect and manage the service through services.msc, but disabling it may remove enhanced IPv6-transition connectivity. Leave it enabled unless you have a specific administrative reason to change it.
Prevention
Keep Windows updated, leave security protection enabled, and avoid system cleaners that delete or alter protected files. When installing drivers or network software, use trusted sources and create a restore point before major changes. If the error returns after a repair, record the triggering update, security detection, service error, or Event Viewer entry. That evidence will identify whether the remaining problem is Windows corruption, a dependency, a driver, or a broader hardware or disk issue.
