GameCube and Wii emulation already works on iPhone for some users, but it is not a simple App Store download. The iOS port DolphiniOS can run games when installed outside ordinary App Store distribution, and a good experience generally depends on just-in-time (JIT) code execution. Apple now permits emulator apps under conditions, but that does not guarantee the execution model Dolphin needs. For now, expect setup and compatibility work—not a Delta-like, broadly available Dolphin release.
Why Delta’s App Store availability does not mean Dolphin is next
Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines now expressly address retro game-console and PC emulator apps. Guideline 4.7 allows them to offer software that is not embedded in the app, including the ability to download games, subject to other requirements. Those include privacy, age-rating and software-indexing rules, as well as restrictions on exposing native platform APIs or technologies to downloaded software without Apple’s permission. Apple’s guideline 4.7 makes emulator apps possible in principle; it is not blanket approval for every emulator architecture.
Older systems such as Game Boy, SNES, Nintendo 64 and DS generally demand less processing per emulated frame than GameCube and Wii. Dolphin must reproduce more demanding CPU and graphics behavior, alongside timing, memory, audio and input. A game that launches is not necessarily running at full speed, producing reliable audio, responding well to its controls or staying stable through a long session.
Dolphin’s developers explain that the emulator relies heavily on a JIT recompiler to translate GameCube and Wii machine instructions into code the host processor can execute efficiently. Their 2024 progress report said a normal iOS App Store release was not realistic without a major change in Apple policy. That is an assessment of the technical and policy conditions described at the time, not proof that Apple can never approve such an app. Dolphin’s 2024 progress report explains the JIT issue in more detail.

What JIT does—and why it matters to Dolphin
An interpreter reads and executes emulated instructions one at a time. A JIT recompiler translates blocks of those instructions into native code as a game runs, which can make demanding emulation much faster. DolphiniOS also offers a Cached Interpreter fallback, but its release notes describe no-JIT operation as “very slow” and say high-end hardware and speed hacks may be needed for playable results. JIT is not a guarantee of perfect performance, and no-JIT does not make every game impossible; the practical difference depends on the game, device, build and settings. DolphiniOS release notes document the fallback and its limits.
That distinction helps explain why raw chip speed is only part of the story. Performance also depends on graphics settings, resolution, shader work, input and synchronization, and sustained device performance. A result on one recent iPhone is not a reliable promise for every iPhone. For online services such as Wiimmfi, DolphiniOS warns against using no-JIT mode: emulation below full speed can cause problems, including bans.
What iPhone users can use today

DolphiniOS is an iOS and iPadOS port of Dolphin. The project directs users to its website for installation and downloads. Its source-build instructions require a Mac capable of running macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later, Xcode 13 or later, and Homebrew or another package manager. The documented Homebrew command is brew install cmake ninja bartycrouch. A developer also needs to change the organization identifier and development team ID; the Xcode project is at Source/iOS/App/DolphiniOS.xcodeproj. Those are build prerequisites, not a universal installation recipe for every reader.

SideStore advertises no-jailbreak sideloading, an in-app JIT enabler and no computer requirement after its initial setup. AltStore is another sideloading option. Neither tool guarantees that a JIT method will work with every device and iOS release, and initial setup and ongoing signing or refresh requirements still matter. See SideStore’s site and AltStore’s site for their current distribution details. Availability and behavior can vary by country, iOS version, account type and device. Alternative marketplaces—particularly relevant to eligible users in the EU—change distribution options; they do not automatically remove JIT, signing or platform restrictions.

DolphiniOS release notes document iOS 26-specific JIT work in the 5.0.0 beta series and name StikDebug 2.3.0 or newer for the documented workflow. They also say Xcode is no longer a supported JIT enabler on devices using TXM—identified in the notes as A15-or-newer and M2-or-newer devices—running iOS 26 or later. For affected devices, the project points to Cached Interpreter or an older device when running through Xcode. Later beta notes report fixes for JIT crashes on some A12–A14 and M1 devices. These are project-specific notes, not a promise that every configuration is supported; consult the release entry for your exact chip and OS combination before relying on a workflow. The project’s release history contains the relevant beta notes.
Why Wii can be harder than GameCube
Wii games add input challenges that go beyond processing demand. A title may depend on pointing, motion input, a Nunchuk, Classic Controller, microphone, Balance Board or another peripheral. Touchscreen pointer modes and controller mapping can help, but they do not automatically reproduce the feel or accuracy of the original hardware. A physical controller is strongly preferable for most games, though it does not solve every Wii-specific control requirement.

- Graphics-heavy effects and shader behavior can make some titles more demanding than others.
- Games sensitive to timing or sustained frame rate can be unpleasant even if they reach gameplay.
- Wii system software and NAND-dependent functions have their own compatibility considerations.
- Save states may not survive changes between major beta generations; check the relevant release notes before updating, and do not assume every save type is affected in the same way.
DolphiniOS release notes document Wii-pointer modes, controller mapping, automatic disc changing, Game Mode and save-state caveats. Check those notes for the build you plan to use, rather than treating console-level compatibility as a guarantee for an individual game.

Recent flagship iPhones are the most plausible candidates, and DolphiniOS recommends a recent iPhone or iPad Pro for no-JIT playability. The project does not establish a universal minimum device or guarantee for each game. Older devices may launch titles yet struggle with speed, shader compilation or sustained play. An iPad may be more comfortable for a long session, while its larger size reduces portability. Any device can also lose performance as heat builds up, and extended emulation can drain its battery quickly.
If you try DolphiniOS, use only game images you are legally entitled to use. Start with conservative graphics settings and native resolution, and use a physical controller where the game permits it. If a game stutters or crashes, check whether JIT is active, reduce enhancements, try another graphics backend if the build offers one, and test another title to distinguish a game-specific issue from a broader setup problem. A black screen can have several causes, including inactive JIT or a device-specific bug; an app that stops opening may need its signing refreshed. Avoid unofficial download sites and ROM bundles.

What would need to change for an ordinary App Store release?
A more viable path would require an Apple-supported JIT entitlement or another sufficiently fast, App Store-compatible execution model, alongside compliance with guideline 4.7’s conditions for software supplied outside the app binary. Better no-JIT performance could also reduce dependence on JIT. These are enabling conditions, not announced plans: there is no verified basis to expect a polished Dolphin-class App Store release on a particular timetable.
For users whose priority is reliable portable GameCube or Wii play, Android phones and handheld PCs generally reduce the iOS-specific JIT and sideloading friction. An iPhone still makes sense for someone who already owns one and is willing to manage a less conventional setup. If installation simplicity matters more than those consoles, stick with an App Store emulator for the systems it actually supports.
