Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo stream IRL on YouTube, use the YouTube mobile app: your channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and have at least 50 subscribers for mobile streaming. You must be at least 16. Enable live streaming ahead of time—YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours—then open the app, tap Create, choose Live, set up the stream and tap Go live. A supported phone is enough to get started; extra gear is optional.
Check YouTube’s live-stream requirements first
YouTube’s general requirements are a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours; once enabled, a stream can start immediately. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Mobile streaming has an additional eligibility threshold: at least 50 subscribers. You also need live streaming enabled and a supported device running Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later. YouTube says the first mobile stream may take up to 24 hours to become available after activation. Check YouTube’s mobile-streaming requirements before planning a time-sensitive broadcast.
YouTube’s mobile help page says mobile streams for users ages 13–17 default to unlisted, while the default for users 18 and older is public. This describes a default privacy setting; it does not change YouTube’s stated minimum age of 16 to live stream. You can change stream privacy during setup.

Choose the right way to go live
| Route | Best for | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | IRL vlogs, events and quick updates away from a workstation | Eligible channel and supported phone or tablet; mobile requires at least 50 subscribers |
| Webcam | A straightforward stream from a computer | A computer with a webcam |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio and video equipment | Streaming software or a hardware encoder; cameras and microphones depend on your setup |
| Console | Gameplay streamed from a supported modern console | A supported console and its device-specific streaming setup |
YouTube describes mobile as useful for vlogging and quick updates, webcam as a quick computer-based route, and encoders as a fit for gameplay, overlays and external equipment. For an on-the-go stream, mobile is usually the direct route. Choose an encoder when you need production controls or want to send a screen or gameplay feed. Console steps vary by device; follow the console maker’s instructions. See YouTube’s overview of streaming methods and encoder guidance.

How to stream from a computer or encoder
Use a webcam for a simple computer stream
If you only need a camera-and-microphone stream from a computer, YouTube’s webcam route is the simpler option. Start from YouTube on your computer, choose the webcam streaming option, grant the requested camera and microphone access, enter the stream details and follow the on-screen prompts to go live. You need a computer with a webcam.
Connect an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing or production gear
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the stream or scheduled event.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder.
- Configure and start the encoder so it sends the video and audio feed to YouTube.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room and check that the picture and sound are correct.
- Click Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready to broadcast. To end, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Details are in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Give scheduled encoder events a technical check
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Check the Control Room preview, confirm viewers can access the event from channel or watch pages and mobile devices, and monitor audio and video quality during the stream. These are preparation recommendations, not a guarantee against connection or equipment problems. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Plan for horizontal and vertical viewing
YouTube says Live Control Room streams support dual horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) output by default where dual streaming is available. The vertical version is a center crop of the horizontal stream, though other layout choices may be available. You can disable dual streaming in settings, but you cannot add vertical output after the stream has started. If important action or people are near the sides of a wide shot, check how the center crop will look before going live. See YouTube’s guidance on live formats.

What equipment do you need?
You do not need an expensive production setup. YouTube’s guidance says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Start with the phone or computer that suits your stream, then add equipment only to solve a real problem.
- Phone: the core option for mobile IRL streaming; consider how you will keep it steady and capture clear audio.
- External microphone: useful when the built-in mic does not capture speech clearly in your environment.
- Webcam: needed for the computer webcam route if your computer does not already have one.
- Headphones: can help you monitor audio in a computer or encoder setup.
- Encoder: software or hardware is relevant when you need gameplay or screen capture, overlays, or connected audio and video devices—not for every mobile stream.
YouTube lists webcams, microphones, headsets or headphones, and hardware encoders as examples of equipment, while noting that expensive gear is not necessary to begin. No particular brand or model is required. See YouTube’s equipment and preparation tips.

Preflight checklist for an IRL stream
- Your channel is verified, eligible, and has mobile live streaming enabled; if this is your first stream, you allowed time for activation.
- Your phone meets the supported operating-system requirement and your channel has the mobile subscriber threshold.
- The title, audience setting and visibility are correct.
- Your camera framing works for the intended format, including any vertical crop you plan to offer.
- Speech and other important audio are audible before you begin.
- If streaming through an encoder, the correct stream URL and protected stream key are configured, the preview looks and sounds right, and the event opens for viewers.
- You know how to end the broadcast and review the archive’s privacy afterward.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded video that should keep looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different option from going live with your phone camera: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; it runs in the cloud, streams what you uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
