Is 2.4 GHz Better Than Bluetooth for Wireless Controllers?

A dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver may suit low-latency wireless play on a compatible setup; Bluetooth can be more convenient. The right choice depends on the controller and host.

A controller’s dedicated 2.4 GHz USB receiver can be the better choice when the exact controller and gaming device support it and low-latency wireless play is the priority. Bluetooth is often more convenient for pairing with supported devices without using a dedicated receiver. Neither connection is universally faster or more reliable: the controller, host, connection mode, receiver placement, and local radio conditions all matter.

What “2.4 GHz” means for a controller

For many wireless gamepads, “2.4 GHz” refers to a connection through a USB receiver supplied for that controller—not a generic receiver that will work with any gamepad. Logitech describes its F710 as using a USB nano receiver, while PowerA lists an included 2.4 GHz adapter for its OPS v1. Check the exact model’s documentation before assuming a receiver is interchangeable.

Some controllers offer more than one connection method. PowerA lists 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth, and wired USB-C for the OPS v1, but the available modes and features vary by model and host.

How the options compare

Consideration 2.4 GHz USB receiver Bluetooth
Latency A manufacturer may position a particular receiver as low-latency, but that is model-specific. The cited official product pages do not establish a universal, independently measured latency advantage. Performance depends on the controller and host implementation. There is no supported fixed latency penalty to apply to every Bluetooth controller.
Setup Requires the correct receiver, a compatible USB port, and support for the target device. Requires Bluetooth support and successful pairing on the target device.
Compatibility Check that the controller and its receiver support the intended platform; a receiver may be tied to a model or ecosystem. Support varies by controller, operating system, console, and mode. Features can differ even when basic pairing works.
Convenience Can suit a fixed PC setup, but uses a USB port and the receiver can be misplaced. Avoids a dedicated controller receiver and can be convenient across supported devices.
Radio conditions The 2.4 GHz band can be affected by nearby devices and physical obstructions; receiver placement may matter. Bluetooth is also wireless, so it should not be treated as immune to congestion or obstructions.

Which connection should you choose?

Choose the receiver when wireless response is your priority

If you mainly play on one compatible PC or other host, a model’s dedicated receiver can be a sensible choice—especially when the manufacturer explicitly documents that mode for your device. Treat “low-latency” as a product-specific claim, not proof that every 2.4 GHz controller beats every Bluetooth controller. The cited official sources do not provide a universal measured latency comparison.

Logitech G F710 Wireless Gamepad with USB Nano Receiver - Grey/Black
  • The 2.4 GHz wireless connection uses a tiny Plug-and-Forget Nano-receiver that stays in your USB port, even on laptops, for fast data transmission with minimal delays, dropouts, or interference.
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* Requires software installation
  • Dual vibration motors let you feel every hit, crash and explosion in games that support vibration feedback for a more realistic and immersive experience
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on game console controllers

Choose Bluetooth when avoiding a dongle matters more

Bluetooth may be the simpler option if your device supports the controller over Bluetooth and you want to avoid using a USB port or carrying a receiver. Verify compatibility separately for each device you plan to use; support for one operating system or mode does not guarantee support for another.

Check features as well as basic connection

A controller can pair successfully while some features behave differently across connection modes. PlayStation’s DualSense Edge support guidance describes Bluetooth and USB support on specified operating systems and notes that some PC haptic feedback may require USB. Check the official guidance for your controller and platform before choosing a mode based only on whether it connects.

Check the exact controller and platform before buying

  • Confirm that the controller supports your console, PC, cloud-gaming device, or operating system.
  • For receiver play, make sure the correct receiver is included or available for that exact model, and that your host has a compatible USB port.
  • For Bluetooth, confirm support for the controller’s specific model and the device you intend to pair it with.
  • Look for mode-specific feature limits, pairing instructions, and firmware guidance on the manufacturer’s support page.

Product pages illustrate why model-specific checks matter. PowerA lists an included 2.4 GHz USB adapter, Bluetooth, and wired USB-C for the OPS v1; Logitech describes the F710 as a 2.4 GHz gamepad with a USB nano receiver. These are product details, not independent comparisons of performance. PowerA also lists up to 20 hours of gameplay per charge for the OPS v1, but does not give a Bluetooth-versus-receiver battery comparison.

If a receiver connection feels unstable

  1. Confirm you are using the receiver supplied for that controller and that the gamepad is in the supported receiver mode.
  2. Move the receiver away from obstructions and likely radio sources. A USB extension cable may help position it away from the host.
  3. Check the controller maker’s model-specific pairing, firmware, and host support instructions.

Audeze gives moving a dongle away from interference sources as general wireless-stability advice, noting that walls, objects, routers, and other 2.4 GHz signals can reduce link efficiency. This is a practical troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed controller-specific fix.
