What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Usually, yes—if your goal is simply to keep prerecorded video on YouTube Live around the clock and you do not want to operate an encoder computer or server. A cloud service can take over the hosting and continuous-playback work. FFmpeg gives you more direct control, but you must configure it, keep its host and process running, and monitor what happens when something fails. That is a workflow-based judgment, not a guarantee that every cloud service is more reliable or cheaper.
What is easier: a cloud service or FFmpeg?
For a straightforward prerecorded loop, a cloud service is generally the simpler operating model: upload or select the video, connect the YouTube stream, and let the service handle continuous playback. With FFmpeg, you control the encoder workflow yourself and need a computer or server that stays available, plus a way to monitor and restart the stream when necessary.
YouTube does not require a particular encoder brand. It accepts an encoder’s output using a stream URL and stream key; an encoder can be software or standalone hardware. YouTube describes the options in its encoder setup guidance.
At a glance
| Choice | What you operate | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo (#1 cloud option) | Upload prerecorded videos, add the YouTube stream key, and start the stream; StreamNeo says it loops playback in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. | A creator who wants an always-on prerecorded YouTube stream without keeping a home computer running. | Confirm that the service’s current terms, storage allowance, and plan suit your intended use. StreamNeo’s listed included features and prices are below. |
| FFmpeg | You prepare and run the encoding/transmission workflow on a host you manage, and handle process monitoring and recovery. | An operator comfortable configuring software, managing a server or computer, and troubleshooting the stream. | Confirm your input and output settings, host capacity, network connection, and restart/monitoring plan. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | Cloud media infrastructure receives a live SRT or RTMP input and transcodes it to HLS or DASH. | A project needing cloud media infrastructure rather than just a turnkey prerecorded-video loop to YouTube. | It is not described as a turnkey service for selecting a YouTube destination and looping uploaded prerecorded videos. See the Live Stream API overview. |
StreamNeo is the first option to consider for this particular goal because it runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and offers a free first day. Those are product details, not a general claim that all managed services have the same features or reliability.

What running a 24/7 stream with FFmpeg involves
FFmpeg is an encoder, not a hosted 24/7 channel service. Google Cloud’s documentation names FFmpeg as one possible program for sending an input stream, but the documentation collected here does not provide a verified FFmpeg command for looping a YouTube broadcast continuously. Rather than risk a command that may not fit your source, FFmpeg build, or current YouTube settings, use this configuration checklist and consult documentation for the exact FFmpeg version and input you operate.
- Activate YouTube live streaming. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this before your intended launch.
- Prepare the prerecorded source. Decide which video or sequence of videos should play, and make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast them. If uninterrupted playback matters, plan what should happen at the end of a file or playlist; looping media and maintaining a live connection are separate parts of the workflow.
- Configure the encoder output. Use the stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure form of RTMP. Its RTMPS guide documents the endpoint requirements, including port 443 and the appropriate server hostname/SNI handling: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
- Match YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube’s current settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supports up to 60 fps; recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; and specifies constant bitrate (CBR). Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your selected resolution and codec rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Check the latest table at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Start the encoder and confirm the preview. Start the FFmpeg process, then use YouTube Studio’s stream status and preview to confirm that video and audio arrive as expected before making the stream public or relying on it continuously.
- Keep the host and process available. Leave the computer or server powered, connected to the network, and able to run the process for the full broadcast. Decide how you will notice a process exit, network interruption, or loss of YouTube ingestion—and how you will restart or reconnect it.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts, logs, or code repositories. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Plan for archives separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full; if saving the broadcast matters, plan for shorter segments and verify the archive behavior you need in YouTube Studio. The cited guidance does not establish every lifecycle detail for a 24-hour stream.
When FFmpeg is the better fit
- You need control over encoding, input handling, or the surrounding production pipeline.
- You already manage a suitable host and can supervise long-running processes and network connectivity.
- You are willing to build and maintain the monitoring, restart, and archive-segmentation plan yourself.
What a cloud service changes—and what it does not
A managed service can move the encoder host and continuous-operation work off your own computer. That does not make every service equivalent: verify that a specific provider supports YouTube, prerecorded looping, your target resolution, stream scheduling and recovery, storage needs, and the archive behavior you want. A service appearing in YouTube’s encoder directory or category is not, by itself, a YouTube endorsement or a reliability guarantee.

For a different kind of cloud option, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is infrastructure for taking a live SRT or RTMP input and transcoding it to HLS or DASH. Its overview mentions FFmpeg as a possible input encoder. That is distinct from a turnkey tool that accepts uploaded videos, selects YouTube as the destination, and loops them for a 24/7 prerecorded channel.

Common problems and practical checks
- The stream will not start: confirm live streaming is activated, the correct stream URL and current stream key are in use, and the encoder can reach YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no signal: check the encoder process, internet connection, endpoint and path, port 443 access, and RTMPS hostname/SNI handling against YouTube’s ingestion guidance. Keep credentials private while checking logs.
- Video stutters or the connection is unstable: review the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder table. Confirm CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval, and check that the host and network can sustain the configured output.
- The playlist ends instead of continuing: confirm that the playback workflow actually advances or loops through its inputs. A live encoder connection alone does not guarantee that prerecorded media repeats.
- The process stops while unattended: on a self-managed FFmpeg setup, check host availability, process supervision, and a restart/alert plan. A cloud provider may handle parts of this, but its recovery behavior should be confirmed for the specific service.
- You cannot find a complete 24-hour archive: do not rely on YouTube’s automatic-archive statement for streams longer than 12 hours. Use a segmentation plan if full preservation is important and verify the resulting archives.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
