Check who is selling it, confirm the card’s region matches the recipient’s PlayStation account, and never give a code or PIN to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Urgent demands, requests for gift-card payment, and unsolicited “free card” links are warning signs.
How to judge whether a PlayStation gift card deal is legitimate
There is no established discount percentage that reliably separates a legitimate offer from a scam. Judge the whole transaction instead of relying on the price alone:

- Seller: Prefer a retailer with a clear purchase record and support contact. The FTC advises avoiding online auction sites because cards listed there may be fake or stolen; that is general gift-card guidance, not an endorsement of any particular PlayStation seller. FTC gift-card guidance.
- Region: Check that the card’s country or region matches the recipient’s PlayStation Store account. A listing that does not clearly identify the region is a risk.
- Card condition and activation: For a physical card, inspect it for tampering. Some cards need activation at checkout, so keep the receipt and ask the retailer to confirm activation if the code does not work.
- How the seller communicates: Ordinary checkout is different from pressure to act immediately, keep the purchase secret, or send the code or PIN to someone.
- Proof and recourse: Keep the receipt and card, and make sure you know how to contact the seller if there is a problem.
No particular discount, marketplace listing, or seller is verified here as safe. A low price alone does not prove a card is fraudulent, but it is not evidence that the offer is legitimate either.
Scam signs: pressure, gift-card payments, and free-card links
Gift-card scams can arrive by call, text, email, or social media. A scammer may pretend to be a government agency, technical-support worker, utility, friend or family member, or prize-giver. Warning signs include being told exactly which card to buy, being kept on the phone while buying it, and being asked to reveal the card number and PIN. The FTC says, “No real business or government agency will ever tell you to buy a gift card to pay them.” See the FTC’s advice on avoiding and reporting gift-card scams.

Treat unsolicited “free gift card” messages with similar caution. The FTC warns that these can be phishing attempts designed to collect personal or financial information; do not click unexpected links in texts or emails. FTC consumer alert, December 21, 2023.
Why the region and account matter
A PlayStation Store gift card adds funds to a wallet through a voucher code. PlayStation voucher codes are 12 digits and can be redeemed in the PlayStation Store on the web, PS5, PS4, or PlayStation App. A code applies to the account that redeems it; codes can only be used once, and funds or content cannot be transferred between accounts. Check that the correct account is signed in before redeeming.

PlayStation requires a voucher’s region to match the account’s region. The account region is selected when the account is created and cannot be changed. Physical cards show a country or region indicator. For a child account, a wallet top-up voucher must be redeemed by the family manager, who can set a monthly spending limit. See PlayStation’s voucher redemption guidance.

A code may fail because it was entered incorrectly, does not match the account region, has an applicable expiry date that has passed, or was not activated at the register. If PlayStation says the code was already redeemed, check the account’s transaction history: the code may have been used on that account. PlayStation’s voucher troubleshooting guidance explains the next steps.
