ARK: Survival Ascended has gained a substantial set of new gameplay hooks: ocean exploration, ships, map areas, creatures, bosses and revised wave physics. That gives returning players more to do, but it does not establish that performance or stability has improved. Whether ASA is worth checking out depends on whether the new content interests you—and whether you want to pay for its premium expansions.
What changed in ARK: Survival Ascended?
Recent official announcements describe additions across several parts of the game, rather than a single cosmetic update. The new material spans ocean survival, nautical combat, map content and creatures. The precise rollout can vary by platform; a PlayStation 5 patch notice confirms features for that platform, but should not be treated as proof that every platform received identical content on the same date.
Genesis Part 1 Ascended brings back the ocean biome
Snail, Inc. announced on July 7, 2026 that Genesis Part 1 Ascended had launched. The company described it as a return of the ocean biome, with new environments, creatures and survival challenges. It said the content was included at no additional cost for ASA owners. Snail’s launch announcement distinguishes this included content from the paid releases.
Tides of Fortune adds a nautical frontier
Tides of Fortune is a premium expansion described by Snail as adding a map-wide nautical frontier, fleets, naval warfare and ocean exploration. The August 28, 2026 PS5 patch notice lists ships for owners of Tides of Fortune or Astraeos, as well as Genesis ocean outposts. That platform-specific notice also lists new Astraeos regions, bosses, mini-bosses and rewards, along with revised wave physics. Spike Chunsoft’s PS5 patch notice provides the platform-specific feature list.
#1 Best Overall
- ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
- Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
- ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.
- Thorough Quality of Life revamps in every area: redesigned User Interfaces, dynamic navigation for intelligent creature pathfinding, Wild Babies, Photo Mode, new Camera systems, new Map system, Tracking System, new Structures and Items, new Creatures, and much more.
- Cross-Platform Modding: Download & play new custom content created by players, including new maps, creatures, items, and game modes, through a dedicated new Mod-bowser directly within the game! Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!
The Galleon is built for combat and construction
Studio Wildcard describes the Galleon as a large ship designed for fortress-style building and cannon combat. Its announcement also highlights rolling waves and shifting seas, making maritime travel and combat part of the feature pitch rather than simply a new setting. Studio Wildcard’s Community Crunch 521 announcement covers the Galleon and wave physics and says Astraeos had reached its completed form.
Creatures and map encounters expand the roster
The PS5 notice names the Boaratos and Concavenator. It says the Concavenator appears on several named maps, with locations varying by variant. This is useful confirmation for PS5 players, but the notice alone does not establish identical availability or timing on other platforms.

How much does the new content cost?
Snail’s July 7, 2026 announcement said Genesis Part 1 Ascended was included at no additional cost for ASA owners. It identified Tides of Fortune as a premium expansion and Dragontopia as a premium expansion pass. Current storefront prices and regional bundles are not established here, so check the store for your platform and region before buying.
Dragontopia also came with company-announced plans for content updates in July and October, culminating in a skyworld map in December. Those were planned milestones, not confirmation that each item has since shipped. Check the current in-game or storefront listing before buying for a specific promised feature.

When is the Unreal Engine 5.8 update arriving?
Studio Wildcard’s schedule called for a Steam Public Test Realm beta beginning October 5, 2026, followed by a full release across platforms scheduled for October 28, 2026. These are announced dates, not guarantees; consult the official ARK: Survival Ascended Steam announcements for any schedule change.
The same announcement said the date change would not affect the September 30 launch schedule for Cerberax, Gargantar or the Therizino TLC. The stated UE 5.8 rollout is an engine update; the announcement does not provide benchmarks showing faster frame rates, better stability or fixes to specific technical problems.

Is ASA worth playing now?
If you already own ASA, the included Genesis Part 1 Ascended gives you a no-additional-cost reason to revisit it, and the broader set of ocean, ship, map and creature additions offers more gameplay to explore. If you are considering paid content, the decision is more specific: Tides of Fortune is aimed at players interested in nautical exploration and combat, while Dragontopia is a separate premium pass whose planned content should be checked against current availability.
The available official notices support a conclusion about added content, not a universal verdict on value or technical quality. They do not establish performance or stability gains across PC, Xbox and PlayStation, nor do they provide player-count or satisfaction data. If your main reason for returning is a hoped-for performance fix, wait for platform-specific patch details or independent testing rather than treating the UE 5.8 schedule as proof of improvement.
