Asphalt 9: Legends launched as a free-to-play game on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10 in September 2021. It has since been renamed through a major update: search your Xbox or Microsoft Store for Asphalt Legends, not the old Asphalt 9: Legends title. The current Xbox listing reviewed marks it free but also advertises optional in-app purchases, including paid random items.
Where to download Asphalt 9 on Xbox or Windows
Open the Xbox Store on your console or the Microsoft Store on Windows and search for Asphalt Legends. The Xbox listing reviewed for this article is a Brazil-region page; it shows the game as free and lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, alongside Xbox Cloud Gaming and handheld play. Availability, supported platforms and store details can vary by region, so check the listing available to you before downloading.
The game is free-to-play, not a paid download that requires Game Pass. The current listing also identifies in-app purchases, including paid random items. It does not establish exact prices or item odds.
Why the store no longer says Asphalt 9: Legends
Asphalt 9: Legends arrived on Xbox consoles in September 2021, with Windows 10 availability announced the following day. In March 2024, Xbox said the upcoming Asphalt Legends Unite release would replace Asphalt 9: Legends on digital storefronts, while existing players could upgrade and continue their progress. The update launched on July 17, 2024, changed the game’s name and introduced cross-play. Xbox coverage in 2025 and the current store listing use the shorter name Asphalt Legends.

That name change is why searching for the original title may not lead to the current product page. Look for Asphalt Legends instead.
What to check before installing
- Your platform: Confirm that your local listing supports your Xbox console or Windows PC. The reviewed store page lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, but that Brazil-region listing does not prove availability in every region.
- Your preferred controls: The Xbox listing identifies PC gamepad support. If you plan to use a controller on Windows, check compatibility for your specific device.
- Cross-play: Xbox’s coverage of the Unite update says it introduced cross-play. The store page also advertises cross-platform multiplayer; consult the current local listing for applicable platform details.
- Optional spending: You can download the game for free, but the listing warns of in-app purchases, including paid random items.
Xbox’s product description promotes more than 250 cars; that is a store-listed feature claim, not an independently audited vehicle count.

Is Game Pass needed?
No Game Pass requirement is stated for downloading the free-to-play game. A separate Xbox Wire article described a Game Pass-linked reward promotion that ran from July 30 to August 28, 2025, with an active subscription and linked accounts required for that offer. Those dates have passed, so that promotion should not be treated as a current download offer.
