Yes. Thronglets is a real mobile game from Night School Studio, released by Netflix alongside Black Mirror’s Season 7 episode “Plaything.” It turns the episode’s cute-but-menacing creatures into a care-and-management simulation that grows darker as your population and responsibilities expand. It’s a strong recommendation for viewers drawn to the episode’s ideas—but you can play it without watching the show first.
Is the Thronglets game real?
Yes. Netflix announced the real-world mobile game on 10 April 2025. Night School Studio made it in connection with “Plaything,” the Black Mirror episode.
Keep the fiction separate from the app: the lost 1994 Tuckersoft game is part of the episode’s story. The real Thronglets is a Netflix mobile game, not a recovered copy of that fictional release.
What kind of game is Thronglets?
It starts with the rhythms of a virtual pet game: hatch creatures, feed, bathe and entertain them, and help them multiply. Netflix describes building a “Throng” as part of the game’s central loop.

As the settlement expands, the game adds management and strategy. You gather resources, construct and upgrade buildings, and balance the creatures’ care against production. Netflix’s guide describes consequences that include neglected creatures dying, pollution from production, and workers becoming ill. The game tracks choices and reflects them back to the player, shifting the experience from cute caretaking toward uneasy questions about how a society is run.
Building a Throng also unlocks “Ritman Retrospective” video fragments and a shareable personality test. Treat that test as a game feature, not a validated assessment of your real personality. Netflix’s “take over your life” language is promotion; it is not evidence that the app literally takes control of a phone or measures its player.

Can you play the game from “Plaything”?
You can play the real Thronglets mobile game, but it is not the fictional 1994 Tuckersoft title shown in the episode. Netflix describes the mobile release as a simulation built around hatching, nurturing and managing the creatures.
Spoiler note: The game’s later story developments connect to the creatures’ ambitions and the player’s attempts to help them. The details below that point are best discovered in the game and episode rather than spelled out here.

How do you download Thronglets?
Netflix lists Thronglets for Android phones and tablets, iPhone, and iPad. Find it through the mobile app store on a compatible device, or follow Netflix’s game support instructions. Netflix’s Help Center puts the requirement plainly: “To play, you’ll have to install the game on your device first.”
The game may not appear for a Netflix profile if its maturity setting is below the game’s rating, or if the device is incompatible. App availability and requirements can change, so check the support page if you cannot find or install it.

Do you need Netflix to play Thronglets?
Yes. Netflix says an active membership is required to play. Its 10 April 2025 guide described access as included with a Netflix subscription, with no ads or in-app purchases. That describes the access terms Netflix stated at the time; it does not establish that those terms will remain unchanged indefinitely.

Does Thronglets work offline?
No. Netflix Help Center says an internet connection is required to download, install and play the game, and that it cannot be played offline.
Do you need to watch “Plaything” first?
No. Netflix says you can start the game without watching either “Plaything” or Bandersnatch. Knowing the episode may make some references and reveals land differently, but it is not a prerequisite for playing.
Who is Thronglets for?
It’s best suited to players who enjoy virtual-pet routines and settlement management, and who are interested in a simulation that lets the consequences of care, production and growth become part of its story. The appealing creature design sits beside themes of neglect, pollution and exploitation, so the tone is not simply cozy.
If you mainly want a conventional action game, or would rather avoid dark themes and story spoilers, the premise may be a less natural fit. For Black Mirror viewers curious about the ideas in “Plaything,” the game offers a playable extension of that premise—and it stands on its own if you have not watched the episode.
