Last checked: August 18, 2026. No confirmed Vanguard-only outage was established at that check. Activision’s status indicator and any current alert are the deciding evidence, although a green indicator cannot rule out a regional or partial failure. On August 17, players reported connection problems affecting Vanguard and other older Call of Duty games on PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net and Steam, but those reports were anecdotal. If Activision shows no alert, check your platform, account and network before changing advanced settings.
How to check whether Vanguard is down
- Open Activision’s Vanguard connection guide and server-status check: Activision Vanguard connection support. A non-green indicator or posted alert points toward a service-side problem. Green means no incident is currently shown, not that every region and mode is guaranteed to work.
- Check Activision Online Services: Activision Online Services. Refresh the page and follow @ATVIAssist for updates.
- Check your platform: PlayStation Network status is at status.playstation.com. Also check the current Xbox, Battle.net or Steam service status page for your platform.
- Review official Activision announcements before relying on social-media reports.
- Use independent reports only as supporting evidence. Posts on Reddit and r/CallOfDuty can reveal a developing incident, but they do not confirm an outage.
Activision’s official Vanguard site remains live and describes Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies. There is no evidence here that Vanguard has been permanently shut down.
How to tell an outage from a local problem
A service outage is more likely when the failure starts suddenly, affects several platforms or Call of Duty titles, and occurs for friends in different regions. Campaign or other offline functions may still work while authentication, matchmaking or Zombies services fail. A connection that fails on both home internet and a mobile hotspot also points away from your router, although carrier networks can have their own restrictions.

Quick fixes when no outage is shown
- Close Vanguard completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Restart the console or PC.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the correct PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net or Steam account and linked Activision account.
- Restart the modem and router, then wait for them to reconnect.
- Pause downloads, streaming, cloud backups and other bandwidth-heavy activity.
- Use Ethernet if practical; Wi-Fi interference and congestion can cause packet loss.
- Test Vanguard again. If possible, try a mobile hotspot briefly as a diagnostic test, not as a permanent connection or a reason to download large updates over cellular data.
Activision recommends wired Ethernet, router restarts, account checks and reducing competing traffic in its connection guidance. Download speed alone does not determine performance: ping, packet loss, routing, NAT and Wi-Fi reliability can matter more.
PlayStation troubleshooting
Run the built-in connection test
- From the PlayStation home screen, open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Select Test Internet Connection and let it finish.
Check PlayStation Network status separately. If PSN sign-in fails, Vanguard cannot authenticate even when Activision services are available.
When only matchmaking fails
Check the displayed NAT type, install pending console and game updates, and test whether Campaign, Zombies and Multiplayer fail differently. A restricted NAT can allow menus while preventing matchmaking or causing disconnections. Crossplay settings can also change who you can match with; do not treat a crossplay symptom as proof of a server outage.

Xbox troubleshooting
Run both Xbox network tests
- Press the Xbox button.
- Select Profile & system, then Settings.
- Choose General and Network settings.
- Select Test network connection.
- If matchmaking, lag or disconnects are the problem, also select Test multiplayer connection.
Check Xbox service status and account or subscription authentication. Review NAT information, install updates and test another online game to separate an Xbox-wide issue from Vanguard.
Battle.net and Steam checks
Battle.net
- Confirm Battle.net itself is online, then sign out and back in.
- Check for pending Vanguard or launcher updates.
- Restart Battle.net and the PC.
- Stop other downloads and close overlays or bandwidth-heavy applications.
- Use the launcher’s repair or scan option only when the symptom points to damaged local files.
Activision links to Blizzard support but does not publish a complete current Battle.net repair workflow in its Vanguard article. Do not delete game files or reinstall while a wider outage remains possible.
Steam
The official Vanguard site lists Steam as a PC platform, while the current Vanguard support summary prominently displays PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Battle.net. That inconsistency is not proof that Steam support ended. Check Steam’s service status, restart Steam, install all updates and verify local files only after ruling out an outage. If other Steam games work and only Vanguard fails, investigate the title installation or Activision account rather than assuming Steam is offline.

For PC crashes or freezes, use Activision’s Vanguard PC troubleshooting and update graphics and network drivers where appropriate. A crash is usually an installation, driver or hardware symptom, not server downtime.

Lag, rubber-banding and disconnects
Activision identifies rubber-banding, stuttering, delayed hit markers and removal from a match or lobby as common lag symptoms in its lag and in-game performance guidance. These can occur while servers are operational.
- Prefer Ethernet and reduce Wi-Fi interference.
- Stop streaming, downloads and cloud synchronization during play.
- Measure ping and packet loss, not just download speed.
- Use router Quality of Service controls if your router supports them.
- Contact your ISP when packet loss or high latency recurs, especially at particular times or only on certain routes.
A VPN is not a default fix. It may alter routing, but it can increase ping, create strict NAT or interfere with authentication and matchmaking.

Advanced router troubleshooting
Use these tests only after status, platform and basic network checks. Router labels vary by manufacturer, and institutional or shared networks may block required traffic.
Test UPnP
- Turn off existing port forwarding.
- Enable UPnP.
- Test Vanguard.
Test port forwarding
- Turn off UPnP.
- Enable the verified platform and game port rules.
- Assign the console a static IP address.
- Test Vanguard.
Do not run UPnP and manual forwarding together for this troubleshooting sequence, and do not open random ports.

- Turn off port forwarding.
- Assign the console’s static IP address to the router’s DMZ.
- Test the game briefly.
- Remove the console from the DMZ immediately after testing.
Never leave a console or PC permanently in the DMZ. Activision’s connection article is the source for these diagnostic sequences: connecting to Vanguard.

When to stop changing settings and wait
Stop troubleshooting locally when Activision or the platform provider posts an incident, multiple platforms and titles fail at once, or friends in other regions report the same problem. Reinstalling, factory-resetting a router, changing DNS, buying hardware or deleting saved data will not repair a provider outage and can create new problems. Recheck the official pages periodically because status indicators can lag behind a partial or regional incident.
What to send Activision Support
If the problem continues after services recover, use the Vanguard support hub. Include your platform and console generation, region, ISP, Activision account details, game mode, exact error text, time the failure began, NAT result, whether other games work, and the tests you already completed. Mention whether the issue affects Multiplayer, Zombies, sign-in or all online functions.
