Short answer: CDKeys and G2A are different kinds of businesses. CDKeys presents itself as a retailer that sells and delivers activation codes. G2A is a marketplace where you buy from an individual seller while G2A operates the platform. That makes CDKeys the simpler counterparty for a beginner, but it does not guarantee that every key will work, remain valid, or be covered like a game bought directly from Steam.
What you are actually buying from each site
CDKeys presents itself as the retailer
CDKeys’ FAQ says it sends a key for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo or PC by email or through the customer’s account. In that model, your purchase is presented as being with CDKeys rather than with a separately named marketplace seller.
The same FAQ says CDKeys has sold keys for more than 10 years, serves millions of customers, accepts Visa, Mastercard and PayPal, and reports a 4.7/5 Trustpilot rating. Those are statements from CDKeys, not an independent audit. Its claim that customers save an average of approximately £18, $21 or €20 per purchase is also a vendor-published average, not an independently verified calculation.
CDKeys also describes itself as “the biggest and most reliable seller of CD Keys in the world.” That is promotional self-description, not proof that it is authorized by every publisher or that every order succeeds.

G2A is a marketplace
G2A describes itself as a secure marketplace where buyers and sellers trade digital items. It says it does not hold or sell the keys itself; sellers list the products and G2A supplies the platform and related services. G2A says sellers are business-verified and that its systems check geographic restrictions, but those are G2A’s representations.
G2A’s terms state that each sale is between the buyer and the seller. Unless applicable law requires otherwise, G2A says it is not a party to the sale and is not responsible for an item’s quality, safety or legality, the seller’s solvency, or user conduct. If a dispute arises, that extra seller relationship can make the remedy less straightforward than dealing with one retailer.

Which one is more reliable?
For a newcomer, CDKeys is generally the less complicated option because it presents one retailer as your counterparty. “Less complicated” is not the same as “risk-free.” No cited source publishes an audited CDKeys invalid-key rate, refund-success rate, or complete supply-chain record.
There is also a negative independent complaint signal. The Better Business Bureau profile for CDKeys.com says the company is not BBB Accredited and displays a 1.4/5 customer-review rating based on 10 reviews. Complaints on that profile allege invalid or delayed codes, duplicate charges and difficulty obtaining support. Ten reviews cannot estimate the site’s true failure rate, but they are enough reason to retain payment protection and avoid assuming every order will be trouble-free.

G2A’s marketplace structure adds a separate seller risk. A listing can be legitimate, misdescribed, region-restricted or later revoked; the relevant seller is primarily responsible under G2A’s terms. That does not establish that G2A keys are inherently stolen or fraudulent, and there is no reliable percentage in the available evidence that would justify such a claim.
What happens if a Steam key is invalid or revoked?
Steam treats a key bought from a third-party site differently from a game purchased in the Steam store. Steam Support says that when a third-party key is revoked, you should contact the seller and request a refund. If that does not resolve the problem, your remaining options may be to buy the game from Steam, activate another key, or receive a gift copy.

Steam’s normal store-refund process does not cover keys purchased outside Steam. Therefore, a discounted third-party key can leave you with a weaker support path even when the game itself is sold on Steam.

How to reduce the chance of a bad purchase
- Check the product type. Confirm that the listing is a game key, not an account, subscription, wallet top-up or other item. Account listings create additional ownership and recovery risks.
- Verify the platform and edition. Check Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox or another launcher, then confirm the exact edition, included content and whether it is a key rather than a gift or account.
- Verify the activation region. A key marked Europe, North America, worldwide or another region may not activate where you live. Do not rely on the game title alone.
- Calculate the real total. Include taxes, payment fees and any regional price difference. A small saving may not justify a more difficult refund or the loss of direct Steam support.
- Keep evidence. Save the listing, seller name where applicable, region statement, edition details, order email and screenshots. These records help if the code is delayed, invalid or revoked.
- Use protected payment. Pay through the marketplace’s checkout with a method that offers dispute rights. The Federal Trade Commission advises against paying outside a marketplace because doing so can remove platform protections.
- Redeem promptly. Test the code while the listing and refund remedies are still available. Do not wait until a return window has expired.
What to do if the key fails
The code is not delivered
Check the order page, account link and email, including spam folders. If delivery is still missing, contact CDKeys through its stated support/refund process or contact the specific G2A seller through G2A’s platform. Keep the order number and screenshots.

The code says it is invalid or already used
Stop retrying random regions or launchers. Confirm that you are using the correct platform and activation country, then open a support case with the seller and provide the exact error and order evidence. Do not close a payment dispute until the seller has actually resolved the problem.
The game later disappears from your library
Steam’s guidance is to contact the third-party seller for a refund. If the seller does not resolve it, you may need to purchase the game from Steam, use another valid key or accept a gift copy to regain access.
When buying direct is worth the extra money
Buy from Steam or another authorized retailer when the discount is small, you value a straightforward refund path, or you cannot afford the possibility of replacing a revoked key. Direct purchases keep the platform as the seller and support channel.

A third-party purchase can make sense when the savings are substantial, the listing clearly matches your region and platform, and you are comfortable handling a seller-based refund. For a first PC game, CDKeys is usually easier to navigate than G2A, while neither should be treated as equivalent to an official Steam purchase.
How to interpret online ratings
Ratings can help identify patterns, but they cannot establish that your particular key is authorized or will remain active. The FTC specifically advises shoppers not to rely on star ratings alone because some reviews and ratings can be fake or misleading. Look at the business model, refund terms, region restrictions and payment protections together.
