Yes. Destiny: Rising is an officially Bungie-licensed game developed and published by NetEase Games. It is set many years before Destiny 1 and Destiny 2, but in an alternate timeline—not a confirmed, direct prequel in the main series’ continuity.
Is Destiny: Rising an official Destiny game?
Yes. NetEase Games developed and published Destiny: Rising under an official license from Bungie, the creator of the Destiny franchise. NetEase described the game as a new adventure in an alternate Destiny timeline. Bungie likewise identified NetEase as its development and publishing partner.
That makes it an officially licensed Destiny game, but not a mainline installment developed or published by Bungie. The licensing does not, by itself, establish that the game’s events fit into the same continuity as the numbered games. NetEase’s official announcement and Bungie’s October 17, 2024 update describe the partnership.
When does Destiny: Rising take place?
The official developer preview says Destiny: Rising is set in an alternate timeline many years before Destiny 1 and Destiny 2. NetEase characterizes its story as taking place in the post-Dark Age era. Taken together, those descriptions place the game before the numbered games while making clear that it tells an alternate-timeline story.

The Destiny: Rising developer preview gives the explicit timeline description. NetEase’s announcement describes the post-Dark Age setting.
Is it a direct prequel to Destiny 1?
Not in the sense of a confirmed story that leads directly into Destiny 1. The official description places Destiny: Rising earlier, but specifies an alternate timeline. The available statements do not explain how every event or character detail connects to—or differs from—the mainline games, so it is more accurate to call it an earlier-set alternate-timeline story than a direct prequel.

Bungie announced that the original Destiny would launch worldwide on September 9, 2014. That date provides context for the mainline game’s release, not evidence that Destiny: Rising shares its continuity. Bungie’s launch-date announcement records the date.
