Usually, only if you want its new display modes enough to replay the game from the beginning. Square Enix says the Switch 2 edition has the same game content as the Switch version, but adds a choice between a 1080p/60fps Performance Priority Mode and a 1440p/30fps Quality Priority Mode. Switch-version save data cannot transfer, so an existing playthrough will not carry over.
What does the Switch 2 edition add?
Square Enix lists two selectable modes for the Switch 2 edition:
- Performance Priority Mode: a publisher-stated 1080p/60fps specification.
- Quality Priority Mode: a publisher-stated 1440p/30fps specification.
These figures are the modes’ stated specifications, not independent measurements of performance or image quality in play. Square Enix describes them as different graphical specifications that let players prioritize frame rate or image quality. The publisher says the game content is the same as on Switch: “The story and the rest of the game content is exactly the same on all platforms.” Square Enix’s official FAQ
Can you transfer your Switch save?
No. Square Enix says Switch-version save data cannot transfer to the Switch 2 version, and its product page repeats that retail-version Switch saves cannot be carried over. If you want to finish your current playthrough, keep playing on Switch; buying the Switch 2 edition means starting a separate playthrough.

Which edition should an existing owner choose?
Consider the Switch 2 edition if the modes matter to you
Choose it if you would value the stated 60fps target more, or prefer the stated 1440p target and accept 30fps, and are happy to restart. The Switch 2 product is a separate edition, listed by Nintendo UK as compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo UK’s product listing
Keep playing the Switch version if your save matters
If you are partway through the game and want to continue that save, the new modes come with a real trade-off: they do not provide a way to carry your progress over. The Switch edition also remains a suitable choice if you are already content with it.

Is there new story or other content?
Square Enix says the game content is the same across the Switch and Switch 2 editions, so the Switch 2 purchase is not a way to get additional story content compared with the Switch version. Nintendo’s listing mentions features such as party-member story chapters, Japanese voices, additional English voices, 3D/2D play, and an orchestral score; these are Definitive Edition features, not additions newly introduced over the Switch edition.

Square Enix announced a Japanese suggested retail price of ¥5,478 including tax and a Japanese release date of September 24, 2026. The price applies to Japan; it should not be treated as the price in the US, UK, or another region. The announcement also says the physical package includes a special sleeve. Weigh the price you find against how much you want the new mode choices and whether you are willing to restart; there is no save transfer stated by the publisher.
