No official Square Enix source cited here says that FINAL FANTASY IX is switching genres in a 2026 release. The publisher still lists FINAL FANTASY IX as an RPG. The separately announced 2026 game is FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, which Square Enix also calls an RPG.
What Square Enix has announced for 2026
Square Enix’s June 11, 2026 announcement is for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, not a new edition of FINAL FANTASY IX. The publisher describes RESONANCE as the first HD-2D FINAL FANTASY game, with a strategic turn-based battle system, and classifies it as an RPG. Read Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY Portal announcement.

#1 Best Overall
- Selling over five million copies since its release in 2000, FINAL FANTASY IX proudly returns on Nintendo Switch!
- Experience the adventure once again with characters and pre-rendered movies featured in high definition, as well as a new booster system with a selection of various modes such as "high speed" or "no encounters"!

- Trance - Fill your Trance gauge as you sustain hits in battle. When fully charged, your characters will enter Trance mode, granting them powerful new skills!
- Synthesis - Never let items go to waste. Combine two items or pieces of equipment together and make better, stronger items!
What the FINAL FANTASY IX listing actually says
Square Enix’s North American store categorizes FINAL FANTASY IX as an RPG and identifies the listed edition as the Nintendo Switch version, released December 9, 2025. Its page describes the game’s story and features, including abilities, Trance, synthesis, minigames, seven boosters, autosave, and high-definition movies and character models. The listing does not describe a 2026 genre change.
The same store copy says the game has sold “over five million copies” since its 2000 release. That is Square Enix’s wording; the page does not give a more precise count or measurement date. Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY IX store listing.

The likely mix-up is between the numeral in FINAL FANTASY IX and a separate new title carrying the FINAL FANTASY name. Square Enix’s 2026 announcement names FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE; it does not call that game FINAL FANTASY IX or announce a genre switch for IX. Both titles are identified as RPGs in the cited official material.
Accordingly, the official pages cited here do not substantiate the claim that FINAL FANTASY IX is officially changing genres in a 2026 release. They establish that Square Enix lists IX as an RPG and announced a distinct RPG, RESONANCE, for 2026. This finding is limited to the official sources cited here; it is not a claim that no announcement could appear elsewhere or later.
