Final Fantasy VII Revelation is being designed to feel larger and more vertically expansive than the two games before it, but it is too early to call it the biggest Final Fantasy by any measured standard. Recent hands-on previews point to a broad overworld, airship traversal, and new ways to move between the world and its explorable areas—not a published map-size comparison across the series.
What “biggest” means for Revelation
Director Naoki Hamaguchi has described a goal of increasing the remake trilogy’s scale with each entry. In an interview with Den of Geek, he said: “One of the goals of the series was to scale up with each successive title,” and added: “For Revelation, rather than just making everything feel wide, we really wanted to create this sense of scale and verticality with everything.”
That points to a particular kind of ambition: a world that feels expansive in both horizontal distance and elevation, with traversal that makes those spaces matter. It does not establish that Revelation has the largest map, longest campaign, or greatest amount of content in the franchise. Neither the Den of Geek nor GamingBible preview provides a comparable series-wide measurement.
How the Highwind is expected to shape exploration
Both previews identify the Highwind as a major means of overworld travel. Den of Geek reports that the party can leave the airship by parachuting into environments. GamingBible describes designated areas where players can land and explore, alongside zones that are inaccessible or marked as no-fly areas. That suggests airship travel will create a new way to approach parts of the world without making every location freely accessible from the sky.

- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: "Graphics Mode" prioritizes 4K high-resolution graphics; "Performance Mode" prioritizes smooth action at 60 frames per second

- Play the brand-new episode featuring Yuffie and experience new combat and gameplay additions
GamingBible also describes the overworld as scaled up compared with the original game in some places and the Highwind as a hub for party, equipment, quests, and activities. These are observations from a preview build, not measured map dimensions or a final specification. The available reporting does not explain every landing restriction or how much control players will have over flight.
What the previews say about gameplay scale
More ways to shape combat
Den of Geek reports expanded combat features and a more varied synergy system. Hamaguchi described its purpose as follows: “One of the goals of the synergy system is to experience different tactics and refresh the experience.” The preview also reports Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine as new playable party members. Cid’s techniques use timed inputs and include aerial strengths; Vincent can fight at close or long range and temporarily enter Beast Mode, which comes with reduced health.

FITS connects appearance and battle roles
The interview describes FITS—Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear—as a system that lets players customize characters into four types, linking costume changes with combat roles. Hamaguchi said: “They’re customizable into four different types, rather than just random jobs, using what was already there in the battle system.” He explained that the developers avoided calling it a conventional job system because that label could suggest a more rigid structure.

Both previews report that Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the concluding installment of the remake trilogy, is scheduled for April 8, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. These are preview reports rather than an official product specification page; check the publisher’s current listings for any later changes before making plans to buy.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
The preview evidence supports calling Revelation an attempt to make the remake trilogy’s world feel broader, more vertical, and more connected through traversal. It also points to additional combat and customization options. It does not support a definitive “biggest Final Fantasy ever” ranking: there is no shared measurement of world area, campaign length, or total content across the series, and the game has not yet been released. Comparisons with Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are more meaningful than a numerical ranking against every other entry.
