Ford has announced a factory-backed return to the FIA World Rally Championship in 2028 and plans to debut an all-new rally car in 2029. The company says that car will take inspiration from one of its upcoming European passenger vehicles, but it has not named the vehicle or identified it as a Fiesta replacement.
What Ford has confirmed about its WRC return
Ford Racing is scheduled to rejoin the WRC as a full factory-backed team from 2028, working with M-Sport. Ford says it will become directly involved in the programme that year. The all-new Ford/M-Sport car is planned to make its competitive debut in 2029. Ford’s announcement describes the rally car as drawing inspiration from one of the company’s future European passenger vehicles.
That is the confirmed link between Ford’s road-car plans and its rally return. Ford has not named the inspiration vehicle, said it will be a small hatchback, or called it a Fiesta successor. Identifying it as a new Fiesta would go beyond what the announcement establishes.
Is Ford bringing back the Fiesta?
There is no confirmed Fiesta revival or replacement in the announcement. Ford says its upcoming European passenger-car portfolio will comprise five “multi-energy” electric vehicles and hybrids, but it does not name the models or say that the range includes a Fiesta successor.

Ford’s WRC and car plans: the timeline

What WRC27 does—and does not—tell us about a Fiesta successor
The FIA says Ford is the fourth constructor committed to WRC27, following Toyota and the independent projects Project Rally One and WRT Rally1 Spain. The regulations allow both manufacturers and independent projects to design, homologate and compete. The FIA also sets a €345,000 cap for a ready-to-compete WRC27 car in asphalt specification, a figure stated by the FIA in 2026. FIA announcement

Those competition rules describe the rally category; they do not identify Ford’s future road car or prove that the WRC entry will be a direct version of a production model. Ford’s announcement makes a narrower claim: the competition car will take inspiration from an unnamed upcoming European passenger vehicle.

A Fiesta successor remains speculation unless Ford names one. The most useful confirmation would be an official model announcement linking a specific vehicle to the European lineup or to the WRC car. Until then, the known facts are Ford’s planned return date, the rally car’s intended debut year, and the broad connection to an unnamed future passenger vehicle.
