Rockstar and Take-Two have documented other free GTA Online content, but those examples do not establish a March 25 offer.
What does “GTA 5 DLC is free” mean?
The phrase can describe different things: an update available at no extra charge to people who own GTA V, selected items included in a pack and claimed in-game, or a limited-time trial of the standalone GTA Online game. Each has different eligibility and access conditions. Without an announcement naming the March 25 offer, it is not possible to say which meaning—or which content—the headline refers to.

Confirmed examples of free GTA Online content
The Contract was free for GTA V owners in 2021
Take-Two announced on December 15, 2021, that GTA Online: The Contract was free to download for players who owned GTA V on PS4, Xbox One, or PC. The story featured Franklin Clinton and Dr. Dre. The announcement also said the PS4 and Xbox One versions could be played on newer consoles through backward compatibility. This is a historical example, not confirmation of a current March 25 promotion. Read Take-Two’s announcement.
Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack items are claimed in-game
Rockstar says the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack includes GTA$1,000,000 and selected properties, businesses, vehicles, weapons, clothing, and tattoos. The listed items are claimed through the relevant in-game storefronts and shops, where they are marked free and have no trade-in value. The content is accessible only in GTA Online; access requires GTA V for PS4, Xbox One, or PC Legacy. The pack is included in GTA V: Premium Edition. Rockstar’s support article was last updated July 5, 2024. See Rockstar’s Starter Pack details.

The standalone GTA Online trial was a separate, expired offer
Rockstar’s free trial of GTA Online Standalone ran from November 11 through November 17, 2025, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar said players had to acquire the standalone game to continue after the trial, and the console subscription requirement was reinstated. That trial was not a free DLC promotion and does not verify a March 25 deadline. Read Rockstar’s trial information.
Do you need to own GTA 5 to get free GTA Online content?
It depends on the offer. Take-Two’s 2021 announcement for The Contract specified that players needed a copy of GTA V. Rockstar likewise lists GTA V ownership as a requirement for the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack on PS4, Xbox One, and PC Legacy. Those conditions should not be assumed to apply to every GTA Online update, trial, or promotion; check the terms of the specific offer and platform.

- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.

- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
What to check before relying on a March 25 deadline
- Content: Find the exact DLC, update, pack, or game named in the announcement.
- Year and time zone: Confirm which March 25 is meant and when the offer ends locally.
- Platform and edition: Check whether the offer covers your console or PC version and edition.
- Requirements: Look for ownership, account, subscription, or in-game claim conditions.
- Region: Verify that the offer is available where your account is registered.
Until an official announcement supplies those details, treat “100% free until March 25” as unconfirmed rather than a guaranteed offer. GTA V itself is a separate purchase, not the allegedly free DLC; Rockstar’s store page reviewed for this article is localized to Australia and displays Australian-dollar pricing, so its price should not be generalized to other regions. Check Rockstar’s GTA V product page for your region.
