No current official evidence shows that Grand Theft Auto V is free to keep on PC today. A review of the live official store pages on August 12, 2026 found no GTA 5 giveaway on the Epic Games Store’s free-games page. Rockstar currently lists the PC game as a paid purchase for $29.99, while Epic and Steam also present it as a paid PC product. There are still legitimate ways to play: buy GTA V from Rockstar, Epic, or Steam, or access it through PC Game Pass while it remains in the subscription catalog. None of those routes should be confused with a permanent free copy.
Is GTA 5 free on PC today?
Not as a verified free-to-keep PC giveaway. The Epic Games Store free-games page says Epic gives away a free game every week, but the currently displayed offerings do not include Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar’s official store likewise lists the PC product for $29.99 at the time of the research check. That purchase includes both GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy. The price is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that the same amount will appear in every country or remain unchanged.
How to play GTA 5 on PC legally
1. Buy it directly from Rockstar
The most direct ownership route is to buy GTA V from Rockstar through the Rockstar Games Launcher store. The official listing checked for this article showed GTA V for PC at $29.99 and included both Enhanced and Legacy.
You will need a Rockstar account, an internet connection for activation and online play, and periodic entitlement verification. Buying the game does not remove those account and authentication requirements. GTA Online is included in the PC product, but online features require internet access and may be subject to additional service and account conditions.
2. Buy it through the Epic Games Store
Epic sells the PC version as GTAV Enhanced. Epic’s product page says the purchase also includes the Legacy version for hardware that does not meet Enhanced’s requirements. You will need an Epic ID, and Epic also references Rockstar account requirements for the game.

Use the official Epic Games Store listing to check the current regional price, edition details, system requirements, and installation options. Owning the game through Epic does not mean that it is free on Epic’s weekly giveaway page.
3. Check Steam for a sale
Steam has a dedicated Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced PC listing. It includes Enhanced, Legacy, and the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack. Steam promotions and prices vary by region and date, so the listing itself is the appropriate place to check for a current discount.
A purchase through Steam is a different storefront entitlement from a Rockstar Launcher purchase. Before buying, check which launcher and account connections the listing requires and avoid purchasing a second copy if you already own a compatible PC entitlement.
4. Use PC Game Pass instead of buying it
Xbox’s official page identifies GTA V as included with PC Game Pass and Ultimate. This can be the lower-upfront-cost option for someone who already subscribes or wants temporary access, subject to the current catalog, region, subscription tier, and account requirements.

PC Game Pass access is not permanent ownership. You can play while the subscription is active and the game remains available to your plan. If the subscription ends or the title leaves the catalog, you may need to subscribe again or purchase the game to continue playing.
What you need to run GTA V Enhanced
Requirements differ between Enhanced and Legacy. The official Epic listing gives the following baseline information for the Enhanced PC version:
