No official announcement or release date confirms that Half-Life 3 is a Steam Machine launch title—or that it has been delayed. The claim came from journalist Mike Straw, who in December 2025 cited unnamed sources predicting that the game and Steam Machine would arrive in spring 2026. Later coverage said the expected announcement had not happened by June, and Valve’s July comments described a preference for the wider PC game catalog over device-exclusive launch games. That leaves the launch-title claim unverified, not confirmed or definitively disproved.
Where did the Steam Machine launch-title rumor come from?
On December 16, 2025, Ars Technica reported on journalist Mike Straw’s comments on an Insider Gaming podcast. Straw said that people he had spoken with remained adamant Half-Life 3 would launch with Steam Machine. The sources were unnamed, and the prediction placed both the game and hardware in a spring 2026 window. That was a reported rumor, not a statement from Valve. Ars Technica’s report also noted Straw’s caution: information he had previously heard about a possible date was not reliable enough to publish in detail, and a date he had heard had already passed.
So the headline’s “hasn’t been delayed” wording goes further than the available evidence. Without an official release date, there is no confirmed schedule against which to establish a delay. The spring 2026 window was a prediction attributed to anonymous sources, not a Valve release target.
What happened to the predicted announcement?
A June 22, 2026 report from DSOGaming said Valve had not announced Half-Life 3 and that the anticipated reveal of a Steam Machine launch game had not occurred by then. That is a dated account of a non-announcement, not proof that the game was canceled or will never release. DSOGaming’s June report does not turn the earlier spring prediction into an official schedule.

What did Valve say about Steam Machine exclusives?
In July 2026 reporting on Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais’s Bloomberg interview, TweakTown quoted Griffais describing Valve’s preference for making the whole PC catalog available on Steam Machine rather than restricting games to the device: “Restricting where people can play a game I don’t think is a great model, at least for us. We’re much more interested in having the whole PC catalog as our ‘launch exclusive.’” TweakTown’s report challenges the idea that Valve intended a device-exclusive launch game. It does not establish whether Half-Life 3 is in development or rule out a simultaneous release on Steam Machine and other platforms.
Why Steam Machine timing adds uncertainty
The hardware’s schedule was also shifting in early 2026. Ars Technica reported on March 9 that Valve had moved from saying it hoped to ship in 2026 to saying it would ship three products “this year,” amid memory and storage shortages. The article described earlier early-2026 and first-half-2026 targets as well. Those are historical snapshots of Valve’s hardware messaging, not a current confirmed launch date or evidence of Half-Life 3’s schedule. Read Ars Technica’s March coverage.

Has Valve announced Half-Life 3?
The reports cited here do not contain a Valve announcement of Half-Life 3, its release date, or its status as a Steam Machine launch title. Valve’s publisher catalog lists existing Half-Life games, including Half-Life: Alyx; that catalog is not an announcement or listing for Half-Life 3. Valve’s Steam publisher catalog is useful for checking the distinction between released catalog titles and the rumored game.
