Roblox warns users not to sell or trade items for real-world money outside its official features. That is a Roblox platform rule, not proof that every such sale is a crime everywhere. Whether a particular transaction also breaks local law depends on where you are and what happened.
What Roblox’s rules say about cash deals
Roblox says the safe ways to exchange items or Robux are its official Trade and Sell features. Its scam guidance says not to use trades or sales to pay for real-world money, accounts, or groups, and states that “Roblox cannot enforce deals made outside our official features.” Roblox Terms of Use and its scam guidance are distinct: the former sets platform terms, while the latter explains the practical risks of off-platform deals.
In other words, arranging payment by cash, payment app, or an external marketplace does not become Roblox-approved because the item is transferred afterward. If the other party fails to pay or deliver, Roblox says it cannot enforce that agreement or return items or Robux lost in an off-platform deal.
Is it illegal under the law?
The cited Roblox materials establish platform policy and account risks; they do not establish a universal criminal-law rule. Whether a sale also violates local law depends on the jurisdiction and the facts, such as what was sold, how the transaction was represented, and whether fraud or another legal issue is involved. The sources do not settle tax obligations or remedies for a failed deal either.

Which Roblox item or sale do you mean?
“Selling Roblox items” can refer to different transactions. The permitted route and risks depend on what is transferred, what is exchanged, and whether the content is your own work.

| Offering an experience-only promotional reward | Roblox allows a narrow category of developer promotions under conditions; it is not general permission to sell Marketplace items for cash. Promotion guidance |
What can happen if you sell or trade outside Roblox?
Roblox says it cannot enforce the deal or recover items or Robux lost through an off-platform arrangement. Its Terms also say: “Suspicious trading activity (including trading or receiving stolen items) may result in account moderation at Roblox’s sole discretion.” Terms of Use
That warning concerns platform enforcement; it is not a finding that every off-platform sale is criminal. Do not hand over an item or account access based on a promise of later payment, and do not assume Roblox can reverse a deal arranged elsewhere.

Official selling has conditions too
Using Roblox’s own selling features does not mean every user can list every item. Roblox’s US avatar-item help page says creators must meet account requirements and follow Marketplace policy and Community Standards. Check the current avatar-item guidance for applicable eligibility requirements.
Roblox also allows developers to offer certain promotional rewards usable only in their own experience. The promotion must have no Robux or real-world-currency value, redemption information must be public, and no transaction can be required to access or redeem it. Developers may not independently run promotions for items available in the Roblox Marketplace. This narrow exception is not a route to sell Marketplace items for cash. Roblox promotion guidance

What to do before making a deal
- For eligible item trades or supported sales, use the relevant Roblox feature rather than arranging payment externally.
- Do not use a trade or sale to pay for real-world money, an account, or a group.
- If money has already changed hands or you suspect fraud, preserve messages and transaction records, report the issue through the appropriate platform or payment provider, and seek local legal advice if the amount or consequences warrant it.
Roblox’s current English-language policy pages describe the platform’s rules, not the law of every country. Its Terms include regional supplemental provisions, and Roblox publishes separate terms for South Korea, so applicable wording may vary by location. Terms of Use; South Korea Terms
