Usually, yes—if you mean your public Steam display name, profile link, SteamID, or friend code. Those help people find your profile; they are not login credentials. But “Steam username” can also mean your private account login name. Keep that to yourself when possible, and never share your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or an unexpected authenticator approval.
The useful rule is simple: share the identifier, not the credentials used to access the account. Even a harmless profile link can reveal information through your public profile, and a scammer may use any identifier as the opening to a more targeted pitch.

Steam display name, login name, profile URL, and SteamID are different
People often use “Steam username” to mean several things. Before sharing one, check which identifier someone is asking for:

Valve distinguishes the account name and SteamID from the changeable profile name, and says the account name and SteamID cannot be changed. See Steam’s explanation of account names and SteamIDs. A SteamID is an identifier, not an authentication secret; Valve also says a Steam ID can reference an account without directly exposing personally identifying information. That does not mean everything on the associated profile is private.

What is safe to share?
For adding a friend, coordinating a game, or letting someone find you, it is normal to share a profile link, public display name, SteamID, or friend code. A profile link alone does not let another person log in or take control of your account.
Before posting a link publicly, review the profile it opens. Depending on your settings and what you have posted, visitors may be able to see your avatar and profile name, friends, games and playtime, achievements, inventory, comments, groups, screenshots, activity, or other details. Valve notes that information made public on a Steam Community profile can be accessed through the Steamworks API and may include information that makes a user identifiable. Your profile may also reveal clues you added yourself, such as a real name, school, location, or links to other accounts.

Steam privacy controls are available through Steam Community profile settings. Review profile visibility, game details, friends list, inventory, comments, and personal details. Interface labels may differ between the website, desktop client, and mobile app.

- Your Steam password or the password to the email account linked to Steam
- A Steam Guard login code, recovery code, or other one-time security code
- Approval for an unexpected Steam Guard login or mobile confirmation
- Payment-card details, purchase information, or screenshots that expose sensitive account or billing details
- Remote-control or screen-sharing access that lets someone operate your device or view private information
A friend does not need these to add you, play a game, or look at your profile. Do not send a “verification” code to someone in chat, even if they claim to be a friend, tournament organizer, developer, or support agent. Handle account-security issues through the official Steam Support site, not an unsolicited chat or a link supplied by a stranger. Valve’s Subscriber Agreement makes users responsible for keeping passwords confidential. Its account security guidance explains Steam Guard protections.
Can someone hack you with only your Steam username?
Usually, no: a public name, profile link, SteamID, or even the login name alone is not a password and does not normally authenticate an account. But an identifier can make the next step of an attack more convincing. A scammer may use it to address you by name, find your public inventory, copy your profile, or tailor a message that appears to be about your account.

The common danger is social engineering rather than someone magically logging in from a username. Treat these approaches as warning signs:
- Fake support or ban warnings: Someone says you were reported by mistake, face a ban, or must verify your account. They direct you to another account, site, form, or chat and ask for credentials or codes.
- Fake trade or inventory checks: Someone claims they must inspect, verify, transfer, or protect your items, then asks for a trade, Trade URL, mobile confirmation, or login.
- Tournament, beta, or giveaway links: A supposed organizer offers entry, a test, or free items and sends a login link. A familiar logo or the word “Steam” in a displayed address is not proof that a page is genuine.
- Impersonation: Someone copies your display name, avatar, description, or a friend’s identity to fool you or your contacts.
- Password reuse: If you reused a password from another service, a breach elsewhere can put Steam at risk too. A known login name may also make a targeted phishing attempt more plausible.
Steam’s Online Conduct rules prohibit scamming, impersonation, stalking, accessing other users’ accounts, and improperly gathering or distributing information. Rules do not stop every attempt, so be wary of urgent demands, secrecy, payment requests, and requests to move the conversation off Steam.

Share with caution: trade links and third-party connections
A Trade URL is not the same as a password, but it is intended for trade-related use and can expose trading activity or be misused as part of a scam. Share it only when a trade genuinely requires it, and do not combine it with a request to log in, hand over an item, or approve an unexpected action. Check the recipient and every item before confirming a trade.
Be cautious with inventory links, screenshots of valuable items, your account email, and links that connect Steam to another service. If a site asks you to sign in, navigate to the service independently rather than following an unsolicited message. Check the actual domain in the address bar and stop if the page behaves unexpectedly or asks for information unrelated to the task. A Steam sign-in or account-linking flow can be legitimate, but a lookalike page can imitate one; a logo alone proves nothing.
Make your account harder to target
- Enable Steam Guard. It adds an authorization step when an unfamiliar device tries to access your account. Find the Steam Guard or account-security area in Steam; the exact path and labels can vary across the desktop client, site, and app. Steam’s security FAQ has current guidance.
- Use a unique password. Do not reuse your Steam password for email, Discord, forums, or shopping accounts. A password manager is an optional way to keep unique passwords.
- Set profile visibility deliberately. Restrict profile details, game information, friends, comments, and other sections you do not want strangers to see.
- Consider limiting inventory visibility. If you own valuable items, a public inventory can attract trade scams and targeted phishing. Making it private or friends-only reduces that exposure; it does not itself prevent account theft.
- Open Steam directly when in doubt. Use the official client or type Steam’s address yourself instead of signing in from a message link.
- Check every prompt before approving. Steam Guard adds protection, but it cannot help if you give someone a code or approve a login or trade you did not initiate. Confirm the action, recipient, and items independently.
If you already shared something, take the right next step

If you clicked a suspicious link but did not enter information or approve anything, close it and do not continue. If you entered a password, code, or payment information, treat that information as exposed and take the corresponding steps above. If you installed software or gave remote access, disconnect the session and secure the account from a device you trust.

A public gaming name can connect a Steam profile to Discord, Twitch, Reddit, or other accounts when the same handle and avatar are reused. If you value anonymity, use a distinct gaming identity and avoid linking accounts unnecessarily. A stranger knowing your account name is not proof the account has been hacked; it may come from a profile, old post, friend interaction, or another public source.
For younger players, keep profile and inventory visibility limited, avoid private conversations with strangers, and involve a parent or trusted adult if anyone asks for codes, money, account access, or personal information. Steam’s Privacy Policy describes its age requirements, which can vary with jurisdiction and consent rules.
