No. The standard Minecraft game is not currently an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Microsoft sells Minecraft for Xbox and Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC as separate products. Bedrock cross-play and Game Pass can let you play on multiple devices, but neither feature turns one purchase into a shared Xbox-and-PC Play Anywhere license.
What the answer means
Xbox Play Anywhere is Microsoft’s “buy once, play on Xbox console and Windows PC” entitlement. Eligible games share a digital license across supported platforms and commonly synchronize compatible saves, achievements and progression. As of August 18, 2026, Minecraft is not listed in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog (Xbox Games catalog).

The current store listings show two separate products: Minecraft for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. Buying either one does not automatically add the other to your account.
Why Minecraft seems like Play Anywhere
Cross-platform multiplayer is not cross-buy
Bedrock Edition supports multiplayer between compatible Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, mobile and Windows devices. That describes who can join a game, not which stores grant you a license. You can play with someone on another platform while each player owns or accesses a separately licensed copy.

A Microsoft account does not merge store licenses
Signing into the same Microsoft account can connect your identity, friends, Marketplace content and online services. It does not convert an Xbox purchase into a Windows entitlement, or a PC purchase into an Xbox console entitlement.
Game Pass is access, not Play Anywhere ownership
Eligible Game Pass plans can include Minecraft on supported devices while your subscription and the game’s catalog availability continue. That is subscription access; it is not evidence that a separately purchased copy is Play Anywhere.

The PC listing also warns that Java and Bedrock worlds are not compatible by default. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux; Minecraft for Windows is the Bedrock edition for Windows.

Can a PC purchase be used on Xbox?
Not automatically. The PC package grants the PC editions only. To play the standard game on an Xbox console, you need the Xbox product or an eligible Game Pass entitlement that includes console access.

Can an Xbox purchase be used on PC?
Not through Play Anywhere. The Xbox purchase is the console product. Windows players who want Minecraft need the PC package or a suitable PC Game Pass entitlement. Buying the Xbox version does not include Java Edition.

Can Xbox and PC players play together?
Yes, when everyone is using compatible Bedrock versions and meets the relevant account, server and online-service requirements. Xbox, Windows, mobile, PlayStation and Switch players generally need Bedrock to join the same ordinary multiplayer world. Java Edition remains a separate PC ecosystem and does not natively join standard Bedrock multiplayer worlds.
Cross-play should not be described as full cross-progression. Console cloud saves, Microsoft-account synchronization, Bedrock Marketplace content and local worlds have different platform and licensing rules. Java and Bedrock saves are not interchangeable by default.

Does Minecraft require Game Pass?
Single-player on Xbox
If you own the Xbox game, single-player access is based on that purchase; a Game Pass subscription is not what makes the game Play Anywhere.

Online multiplayer on Xbox
The current Xbox listing says online console multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, sold separately (Minecraft Xbox listing).
Subscription access
The Xbox store pages show Minecraft in certain Game Pass catalogs, including Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Access can end when the subscription ends or the title leaves the catalog. Game Pass does not make a direct purchase cross-buy.

Minecraft Dungeons II is explicitly labeled Xbox Play Anywhere and is announced for September 29, 2026 (Minecraft Dungeons II; Xbox Wire announcement). That label applies to Dungeons II, not to standard Minecraft. Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends also have their own store and entitlement rules.
Which version should you buy?
Choose the Xbox version when
- You mainly play on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- You want console split-screen or console Bedrock multiplayer.
- You do not need Java Edition.
Choose the PC Java & Bedrock package when
- You want both Java and Bedrock on Windows.
- You need Java servers, mods or Java-specific features.
- You want to play Bedrock with console and mobile friends from Windows.
- You do not need an Xbox console entitlement.
Choose Game Pass when
- You already want a broader PC, console or cloud library.
- You value subscription access and, on an appropriate plan, Xbox online multiplayer benefits.
- You understand that the subscription is not permanent ownership.

These are United States storefront signals from that date. Prices, taxes, promotions, regional availability and subscription catalogs can change; check the product pages before buying.
Edge cases to check before paying twice
- Older Windows 10 or Xbox One ownership: Legacy purchases and historical upgrade programs can create account-specific entitlements. Check Microsoft/Xbox purchase history and the account’s “Ready to install” list rather than assuming a new license.
- Physical Xbox copies: A disc is not the same as a digital Play Anywhere entitlement and does not ordinarily unlock the Windows PC package.
- Edition names: “Minecraft for Windows” means Bedrock; “Minecraft: Java Edition” is the separate Java PC edition; “Minecraft: Xbox One Edition” is an older legacy console product.
Bottom line
Standard Minecraft is not currently Xbox Play Anywhere. A PC purchase does not unlock Xbox, and an Xbox purchase does not unlock the PC Java-and-Bedrock package. Bedrock cross-play lets compatible devices play together, while Game Pass can provide subscription access. Buy the Xbox version for console play, the PC package for Java and Bedrock on Windows, or both if you want permanent access on both platforms.
