OBS Studio is a strong default for YouTube Live if you want control over scenes and encoding, but it is not the best fit for everyone. Try OBS first when you are comfortable configuring your setup; consider Streamlabs Desktop if you value its guided workflow and built-in widgets. Either way, your computer, encoder, stream settings, and internet connection determine whether the broadcast runs well.
OBS vs. Streamlabs Desktop: which fits your stream?
| What matters | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow | Provides control over scenes and output; you configure the setup to suit your stream. | Its setup guide covers connecting a platform, creating scenes and sources, adding widgets, adjusting audio and video settings, and checking the stream before going live. This is vendor-described workflow, not an independent usability comparison. |
| Encoding | Supports software encoding such as x264 and hardware encoding options, depending on computer and platform. | Its setup guide includes encoder selection; available choices and suitability depend on the system. |
| Creator extras | Choose it for scene and output control rather than relying on a guided widgets workflow. | Integrated widgets and overlays may be useful if you want them as part of setup. |
| Performance | Neither name alone predicts performance. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, and hardware all affect the load. Test the exact setup on your machine. | |
Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide, published May 20, 2026, says there is no one-size-fits-all stream setting. Its free version includes one platform per video layout orientation. That describes the vendor’s offering, not comparative evidence about quality or resource use. Read Streamlabs’ setup guide.
Will your PC run OBS while streaming?
A computer that meets OBS Studio’s compatibility requirements may still struggle with a particular broadcast. OBS says that CPU demands vary substantially with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that compatibility does not guarantee the system can stream or record. Its requirements page recommends starting with Tools > Auto Configuration Wizard to find suitable settings for your machine. Check OBS Studio’s system requirements.
Hardware encoding is often a sensible starting point for performance: it shifts encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component in the GPU. But older generations of hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. Check current compatibility for your operating system and hardware, then compare the result in a real test. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What bitrate and settings should you use for YouTube Live?
Choose a resolution and frame rate your internet connection and computer can sustain, then select the bitrate for the codec you actually use. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not a guarantee that your connection can maintain them.
| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Do not mix the codec columns or treat a bitrate as universally correct. YouTube’s encoder guidance accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS for secure transmission to YouTube’s servers. Audio may use AAC or MP3. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); consult its dedicated HDR instructions and confirm encoder support before configuring an HDR stream. See YouTube’s current encoder settings and full bitrate guidance.

Set up and test before you go live
- Choose a starting output. Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard, then select a resolution and frame rate your machine and connection can support.
- Choose an encoder and bitrate. Consider hardware encoding for CPU headroom, but validate image quality on your system. Match the bitrate to the selected codec and output using YouTube’s guidance.
- Check stream parameters. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Use RTMPS where available, and configure audio with AAC or MP3.
- Test a representative scene. Include the kind of motion and audio the actual broadcast will have. Check for dropped frames, stuttering, weak audio, and encoder overload before scheduling an important stream.
- Monitor the broadcast. During the event, watch YouTube’s stream health and messages so you can react to problems rather than assuming a successful start means the stream remains healthy.
If you use Streamlabs Desktop instead, its setup guide walks through connecting YouTube, adding scenes, sources and widgets, choosing the primary microphone under Mic/Auxiliary Device, setting resolution, FPS, bitrate and encoder, then testing alerts, camera placement and audio before going live. Follow Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide.
Common problems and what to check
- Encoder overload or stuttering: Lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify complex scenes, or try a supported hardware encoder. Re-test because encoder generations can trade image quality against CPU load.
- Unstable stream or dropped frames: Test upload capacity and choose an output the connection can sustain. A recommended bitrate is a target, not proof that your connection can hold it.
- Soft or blocky picture: Check that the selected bitrate matches both the codec and resolution, and that the source itself is suitable for the chosen output. Test movement as well as static scenes.
- Missing or poor audio: Confirm the intended microphone or audio source is selected and audible in the test. In Streamlabs, the setup guide identifies the main microphone under Mic/Auxiliary Device.
- Settings work in one scene but fail in another: Re-test with the actual scene complexity, sources, and movement; those factors affect system load.
When you want a YouTube stream to stay live without your PC
