Its Ministry of Justice route is the clearest match for a traditional detective adventure. The rest of the game shifts into other formats, so it is less suited to players looking for one sustained, mechanically deep investigation.
What kind of mystery game is SHUTEN ORDER?
SHUTEN ORDER centers on a four-day hunt to solve the murder of the Founder of the Shuten Order, an apocalyptic religious organization. The Founder returns as Rei Shimobe with lost memories and must identify and kill the murderer to achieve true resurrection. Five ministers are suspects, and choosing one determines which route you investigate.
Spike Chunsoft’s official materials describe five routes with different stories and game systems. You need to complete all five to unlock the final chapter, so the larger mystery unfolds across the full set rather than through one continuous detective campaign.
How much of it is conventional detective adventure?
Ministry of Justice: the closest match
This is the most direct fit for mystery-adventure fans. You interview people, examine crime scenes, scrutinize suspicious statements and objects with the “Snapping” feature, and review evidence to solve a family murder. A GamesRadar review praised this route’s investigation and clue-based deductions, while describing those deductions as relatively forgiving. Expect case-solving, but not necessarily a demanding deduction system.

Four routes with different mechanics
- Ministry of Security: stealth-action horror, with 3D exploration and evasion of the killer Nephilim.
- Ministry of Science: a multi-perspective visual novel in which points of view shift across branching timelines, and one character’s actions affect others.
- Ministry of Education: a romance adventure where choices build affection with three girls as you work out which one is the suspect.
- Ministry of Health: an extreme escape adventure set in a death game, with a 3D maze, puzzles, and dangerous choices.
These routes contribute to the wider story, but they are not all detective adventures in the same sense as the Justice route.
Who is likely to enjoy it—and who might not?
- A strong match: You like collecting pieces of a larger truth across branching stories, and you welcome changes in gameplay as part of the experience.
- A less certain match: You mainly want sustained interviews, evidence analysis, and deduction. The Justice route offers those elements, but the other four routes change the format substantially.
- Consider the tonal content: Steam’s content notice lists blood, graphic violence, coarse language, and drug usage.
The GamesRadar reviewer found the cross-route mystery most engaging when clues and the larger story connected, but also called the experience somewhat splintered and felt that individual routes did not develop their genres deeply. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measure of how mystery fans as a whole will respond. It does point to the central trade-off: variety and a connected story in exchange for less consistency and, for some players, less depth in each individual mode.

Spike Chunsoft lists the original release date as September 5, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam. Its product information lists a physical release for April 23, 2026. Listed language options vary by platform: Switch has Japanese voice and English text; Steam has Japanese voice and Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese text. One GamesRadar reviewer reported spending about five hours on each route and about 30 hours reaching the proper ending. Treat that as one playthrough’s reported time, not a standardized estimate; your pace may differ.
