Skyblivion remains in development, and its team is targeting a release in 2026. That is a target, not a confirmed launch date: the official FAQ gives no quarter, and PC Gamer reported on September 15, 2026, that no firm date had been announced.
What Skyblivion is—and what it is not
Skyblivion is a volunteer-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, built as a mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition. The TESRenewal team is rebuilding Cyrodiil and its quests, locations, characters, and systems in Skyrim Special Edition’s engine. It is a substantial remake project, not simply a texture update. The official FAQ and press kit describe the project and its aims.

The project’s history goes back to 2012, and its official timeline says work on the remake began in November 2016. The press kit describes a team of “50+” members and “Over 223” quests; those are the project’s own figures, not an independently audited count of the unreleased build. The About page documents the timeline.
When is Skyblivion coming out?
The team’s FAQ says it is “now aiming for a release in 2026,” with “currently no specific public timeframe as to which quarter in 2026.” So the accurate answer is that Skyblivion is targeting 2026, but it does not have a publicly announced firm date or quarter.

The date has already moved once: in an announcement dated December 3, 2025, the team shifted its anticipated release window from 2025 into 2026. The team said it needed more time to deliver a polished, stable, complete experience. Read the official delay notice.
In an April 3, 2026 report, PC Gamer quoted project lead Rebelzize saying that he was “pretty optimistic” based on what he saw internally, while acknowledging that another major setback was possible. Later, on September 15, PC Gamer reported that no firm release date had been announced. The team was recruiting communications volunteers for trailer work, gameplay captures, and developer interviews. That shows promotional work is active; it does not establish that launch is imminent or guarantee the 2026 target. April report · September report
What remains to be done?
The December 2025 delay notice listed work including Imperial City assets and interiors, navmesh across locations, final quest implementation and debugging, and broader testing, balance, and bug fixing. The team said the world map and all quest dungeons were complete and core 3D assets were essentially finished. These were the team’s reported milestones at that time, not an independent audit of the build.
In April 2026, PC Gamer reported that quest locations had been completed and quality-checked and that the Imperial City had reached a needed breakthrough, citing Rebelzize. Those updates indicate progress, but neither establishes a completion percentage or resolves the release-date uncertainty.

What is planned for the initial release?
According to the project’s FAQ and press kit, the intended initial release covers the mainland Cyrodiil experience, including quests, locations, NPCs, weapons, armor, redesigned dungeons, Oblivion realms, and the exterior world. The team also describes visual and audio updates and plans to bring back classic systems such as classes, attributes, lockpicking, and NPC disposition.
This is the project’s stated scope for an unreleased mod, not a feature-by-feature verification of a finished build. The team says work on other releases, including Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, is planned after the initial release.
Does Bethesda’s Oblivion remaster affect Skyblivion?
The Skyblivion team’s FAQ says Bethesda has been supportive of the fan project and that the official remaster has not stopped it. Skyblivion is being developed for Skyrim Special Edition’s engine; the team says moving it to the remaster’s engine this late would be like porting Oblivion to Oblivion and would practically mean starting from scratch. That support claim is the team’s account in its FAQ, not a separate statement from Bethesda. See the FAQ.
What do you need to play Skyblivion?
Skyblivion is described as free, but it is a mod rather than a standalone commercial release. The official FAQ says players need Skyrim Special Edition and Oblivion GOTY Deluxe. It supports Steam and GOG copies, including a mix of storefronts; Skyrim Anniversary DLC is not required.
