Yes. Bethesda says Prime Video’s Fallout series is set in the same universe as the games, and Todd Howard has described it as canon. The series tells its own story in that shared setting, though: canon status does not mean it adapts a game’s main quest or settles every player-shaped ending.
What “canon” means for the Fallout series
Bethesda’s official announcement describes the show as taking place in the same universe as its games, among Vault dwellers, survivors and a radiation-ravaged Wasteland. That makes the series part of the shared Fallout setting, rather than a separate, unrelated adaptation. Bethesda’s announcement also identifies Prime Video as the series’ platform.
Is the show adapting one of the games?
No. The series has an original plot set in the game universe, rather than retelling a game’s main quest. In an interview with About Amazon, co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet said the creators did not want to copy exactly one game’s story and knew they would craft their own. | Game | Year |
|---|---|
| Fallout 76 | 2102 |
| Fallout | 2161 |
| Fallout 2 | 2241 |
| Fallout 3 | 2277 |
| Fallout: New Vegas | 2281 |
| Fallout 4 | 2287 |
Bethesda calls Fallout 76 the formal beginning of the games’ timeline, and Fallout 4 the latest point covered on that timeline. The official show page does not give the series’ precise in-world year, so those game dates alone do not establish exactly when the show takes place. See Bethesda’s Fallout timeline.
Does the show choose an ending for the games?
Not necessarily. The games can leave outcomes shaped by player decisions, and the show being canon does not by itself declare one player’s ending to be the definitive version. In a GamesRadar+ interview report, Todd Howard said the creators aim to respect what came before while telling stories from the perspective of people in the world, where accounts can sometimes conflict. That leaves room for ambiguity rather than requiring the series to settle every disputed event or choice. Read GamesRadar+’s report on Howard’s comments.

Which games connect most directly to the show?
Bethesda’s guide to the series points viewers to Fallout: New Vegas for the Mojave setting, describing it as a “must-play” for people who want to walk the same sands. It also recommends Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 as ways to explore more of the franchise. These are optional connections, not prerequisites for following the show. See Bethesda’s guide to connections between the show and games.
