1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt can be, but only if the specific games you care about work well enough for you—and you can tolerate some uncertainty or setup. If an essential game is marked Unsupported or Unknown, especially an online multiplayer game that depends on anti-cheat, do not buy a Steam Deck on the assumption that a workaround will fix it. Check each must-play game’s compatibility details before deciding.
What Steam Deck compatibility labels mean
Valve’s labels describe reviewed compatibility, not a universal promise that every game with a particular badge will behave identically for every player.
- Verified: The game works well on Deck by default.
- Playable: The game works, but may need manual configuration.
- Unsupported: Valve currently does not consider the game playable on Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not checked the game.
Valve says compatibility reviews are ongoing and ratings can change as the Deck and games improve. Treat a badge as a current assessment, not a permanent verdict. Valve’s Deck Verified page explains the categories.
Why a game may lack official support
Compatibility is about more than whether a game launches. Valve reviews four areas: input, display, seamlessness, and system support. A game can fall short because of its controls, hard-to-read text, a launcher that is awkward to navigate, required middleware, or a functional problem.

#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
- Input: Whether the game supports a controller, shows appropriate controller icons, and provides an on-screen keyboard when needed.
- Display: Whether it works at the Deck’s default resolutions and whether text and interface elements are legible.
- Seamlessness: Whether warnings or launchers interrupt play or require awkward navigation.
- System support: Whether the game and its middleware work through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux-based SteamOS.
That distinction matters when you weigh a workaround. A launcher that can be navigated with the touchscreen may be a tolerable inconvenience; a game that does not function, or whose required online service blocks play, may be a deal-breaker. Valve’s criteria and its Steam Deck software guide describe the categories and compatibility details.
Proton does not guarantee that an unsupported game will work
Proton lets many Windows games run on SteamOS, but its support for a technology does not automatically make every game using that technology compatible. Valve says Proton supports Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but developers must configure and enable support for their games. Valve also says kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported.

This is especially important for online multiplayer. A game might launch but still fail to connect to its required service, or a workaround might not preserve online access. Check the exact game and its multiplayer requirements rather than assuming that Proton support for an anti-cheat product settles the question. Valve’s Steamworks Proton documentation explains the conditional support.
How to check your games before buying
- Make a must-play list. Separate games you would like to try from titles you consider essential, and note whether online multiplayer or another specific feature is required.
- Open each game’s Steam Store page. Read the Steam Deck Compatibility section, not just the overall badge. Valve says the detail panel identifies which Verified requirements a game does not meet.
- Judge the specific obstacle. A controller adjustment or touchscreen launcher may be acceptable to you; a game that is not functional or a required anti-cheat service that is not enabled for Proton is a more serious barrier.
- For a Steam game that fails, try Valve’s troubleshooting guidance. In the game’s Properties > Compatibility settings, force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and try the latest Proton version. Steam Support notes that Steam may download the Windows build if only the Linux version was installed. These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee of functionality, performance, updates, or online access.
- Check again after updates. Game, Proton, and SteamOS updates can affect compatibility, and Valve’s ratings may change.
See Steam Support’s Steam Deck software guide for the compatibility detail panel and troubleshooting steps.

When the Steam Deck is a sensible purchase—and when it is risky
The decision turns on your own library, the features you need, and how much tinkering you are willing to do. If most of your priority games are Verified or Playable, and occasional setup is acceptable, an unsupported title may be a manageable exception. If one of your essential games is Unsupported or Unknown, the risk is much higher—particularly when dependable multiplayer access matters.
Before buying, compare the ways you might play your must-have games on these points:
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Coverage: Does each essential title work on the device you are considering?
- Online access: Does the game’s anti-cheat and required multiplayer service work?
- Setup: Is it ready to play, or will it require controller, launcher, or Proton configuration?
- Handheld usability: Are the text and interface readable at the screen size and resolution?
- Confidence: Is compatibility supported by a current Valve status or developer statement, or does it depend on an informal workaround that could stop working after an update?
If an essential Unsupported or Unknown game determines the purchase, wait for current, title-specific evidence or choose hardware and software known to support it. Do not count on a hypothetical future fix. Valve’s Steam Deck store page is the place to review the hardware itself; it does not change a game’s compatibility status.
