Yes. Microsoft offers an official Xbox PC app for Windows 11. You can download it for free to browse, install, and manage compatible PC games, use Xbox social features, and access Game Pass. You do not need an Xbox console just to use the app, and installing it does not include paid games or a subscription.
What the Xbox app for Windows 11 does
The Xbox PC app is a gaming client for Windows, separate from both an Xbox console and an Xbox Game Pass subscription. It brings Xbox-related PC gaming and account features together in one place.
- Browse, buy, download, install, and launch compatible PC games; purchase some games, downloadable content, and add-ons through its Store section.
- Browse and install games included with a Game Pass plan that covers PC.
- View your library and organize installed games. Xbox says the app can bring together games from “most” other PC storefronts, but this is a convenience for finding and launching games, not a transfer of ownership.
- Use Xbox friends, text or voice chat, notifications, achievements, saves, rewards, and profile features. Supported account linking can include services such as Steam, Discord, and Twitch.
- Use Xbox Cloud Gaming with a qualifying plan where the feature, device, and region are supported.
- Use remote play to stream a game from your own configured Xbox console to your PC.
Features and game availability vary by title, plan, region, and service. A particular game may still require a separate account, launcher, or anti-cheat component.
How to download and install it
- Open the official Xbox PC app page and select Download the app, or open its Microsoft Store listing.
- Follow the download or Microsoft Store installation prompts.
- Open Xbox from the Windows Start menu and sign in with a Microsoft account when prompted.
- Browse the Store, Game Pass, or Library sections. Install a compatible game, or launch one already installed.
Download and installation labels can change as Microsoft updates the flow. Windows 11 supports the app, but not every Windows 11 PC necessarily has the current Xbox PC app installed already.

Is the Xbox app free? Do you need Game Pass?
The app is free to download. Game Pass is optional for installing the app, but access to its catalog requires a plan that includes the relevant games and platform. Games bought separately and some free-to-play titles can be used without a Game Pass subscription, subject to each game’s requirements. The app page says Game Pass is sold separately.
As of September 28, 2026, the U.S. Xbox Game Pass page describes these plan categories and library sizes; they are Xbox’s current descriptions, not permanent guarantees. Catalogs change, and availability varies by plan, region, and platform.
| Plan category | Xbox’s current description | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games playable on console, PC, and other supported devices | Check whether the particular game is available for PC and included in your region. |
| Premium | 200+ games playable on console, PC, and other supported devices | Check the current catalog and platform availability. |
| Ultimate | 500+ games across console, PC, and other supported devices, with additional benefits | Confirm which benefits and games are currently included where you live. |
| PC only | 300+ PC games, day-one titles, EA Play, and other benefits | Check current PC catalog and plan terms. |
These descriptions come from the U.S. Xbox Game Pass page as of September 28, 2026. Prices were not stated there in a usable form, so check the live signup page for your country and account rather than relying on a stale price. Promotions may depend on eligibility, region, and duration; subscriptions can renew automatically unless canceled or recurring billing is turned off. Game Pass access is not permanent ownership: access can end when a subscription expires or a title leaves the catalog.

Do you need an Xbox console?
No console is required for the Xbox PC app, PC games purchased for Windows, or PC Game Pass games. Console games can reach a PC in three different ways, and they are not interchangeable:
Recommended Free Tools
Native PC games
Some Xbox-published games have Windows versions that run locally. You need the PC version and a computer that meets that specific game’s requirements; installing the app does not make every console game available on Windows.
Cloud gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s service rather than installing them locally. It requires a qualifying Game Pass plan, supported device and region, and a suitable internet connection. The available games and features depend on the service and plan.

- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Remote play
Remote play streams from your own Xbox console. You need the console, the game installed on it, and remote play configured. This is different from cloud gaming, which streams from Microsoft’s service.
Xbox app, Game Bar, and Microsoft Store: what is the difference?
The names overlap, but these Windows features have different jobs:
- Xbox PC app: A gaming-focused client for browsing and managing games, Game Pass, Xbox social features, cloud gaming, and console remote play.
- Xbox Game Bar: A Windows gaming overlay, opened with Win + G. Use it for in-game overlay features and conversations; it is not the main Xbox PC app.
- Microsoft Store: The broader Windows storefront for apps and games. It distributes the Xbox app and many games. A game launched through Xbox may still rely on Microsoft Store infrastructure or another service behind the scenes.
Xbox app versus Steam, Epic, and other PC launchers
The Xbox app is most useful for people who want Xbox accounts, PC Game Pass, or console-to-PC features. It can sit alongside other launchers; it does not replace them or turn their purchases into Xbox licenses.

- COMPATIBILITY: Support PC Computer, Laptop, Notebook. Windows XP/7/8/10/11, Steam, PS 3
- COMPATIBILITY FOR ANDROID: Support Android Mobile Phone/Tablet/TV/Box(system version 4.0 or above, and the device must fully support OTG function). Need to purchase a OTG adapter or cable for the Android device with Type-C or Micro-USB port.
- PLUG AND PLAY: Only for PC games supporting Xinput mode / Android mobile games supporting Android mode / PS 3. No need to install drivers except for Windows XP.
- PRODUCT FEATURE: Multi-mode: Xinput & Dinput & Android & PS 3 / Vibration Feedback Function / JD-SWTICH Function / TURBO Function
- NOTICE: This USB Wired PC Controller Gamepad does not support the Xbox 360 / Xbox One / Mac OS / PS4
| Service | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox PC app | Game Pass for PC, Xbox-published PC games, Xbox friends, cloud gaming, or console remote play | Some non-Xbox storefront games may appear in its library, but their original launcher or account may still be needed. |
| Steam | Broad PC catalog, community features, and mod support for compatible games | Does not provide Xbox Game Pass or Xbox console integration. |
| Epic Games Store | Epic games, exclusives, and Epic promotions | Does not provide the same Xbox ecosystem features. |
| GOG | DRM-free games and older PC titles | Does not focus on Game Pass, Xbox achievements, or console remote play. |
| Microsoft Store | Direct Microsoft distribution of Windows apps and games | It is the broader storefront, rather than the Xbox app’s gaming-focused hub. |
If a Steam, Epic, GOG, or other game is missing from the Xbox library, check that the original launcher is installed and signed in, and that the game was installed through that service. The Xbox app’s aggregation is not universal; launch, updates, achievements, cloud saves, and controller features can vary by storefront and game.

Xbox currently lists these requirements for the app itself:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or later.
- 150 MB of storage for the app.
- A 720p display.
These are app-level requirements, not a promise that every game will run. Check each game’s requirements for processor, graphics, memory, storage, DirectX, and other needs. Xbox also notes that playing games through the app may require leaving Windows S mode.

Troubleshooting common problems
The app will not install
Check that Windows is up to date and meets the listed version requirement, that the Microsoft Store and Microsoft account sign-in work, and that enough storage is available. Windows S mode, security software, organizational restrictions, or parental controls may also block installation. These checks identify common blockers; there is no single fix for every installation failure.
A game will not install or launch
Confirm that the game is available for PC in your region and included in your plan, if you are relying on Game Pass. Check free storage and the game’s hardware requirements. An outdated Windows or gaming component, account or license mismatch, or a required third-party launcher can also prevent installation or launch.
A Game Pass game has disappeared
Subscription access does not guarantee permanent availability. A game may no longer be accessible if your subscription expires or the title leaves the catalog; check the current plan and library listing.
Cloud gaming is unavailable or unreliable
Check that your plan includes cloud gaming, your region and device are supported, and your network is stable. Latency, Wi-Fi interruptions, data caps, and controller compatibility can affect play. Availability and performance depend on the service conditions where you are.
