Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is a direct sequel to the 2004 Bloodlines, set 20 years after the original’s events. It follows a new central character, Phyre, rather than establishing the first game’s protagonist as the lead again. The story brings the series to modern Seattle, while a second playable perspective reaches into the city’s past.
When does Bloodlines 2 take place?
The sequel is set 20 years after the events of the original game. That gap makes it a follow-on in the same franchise world, not a story that picks up immediately after the first game’s ending. The timing was described by The Chinese Room design director Alex Skidmore and White Wolf brand marketing manager Jason Carl in a 2025 Epic Games Store interview.
Who is the new story about?
Phyre is the central protagonist
Players take the role of Phyre, an elder vampire who awakens in modern Seattle after a century in torpor. That long sleep is part of the story’s explanation for Phyre encountering a world and vampire society that have changed. Skidmore said the game leaves the reason for Phyre’s torpor open for players to question. Paradox’s game overview introduces Phyre and the Seattle setting.
Fabien provides a second perspective
Players also experience the story through Fabien, a Malkavian detective. His investigation is set against 1920s Seattle and reaches back across the city’s history, showing some characters in different periods. As Skidmore put it, “We’re telling this story of Seattle and its politics over a hundred years through this extra lens of Fabien.” The result is a historical thread alongside Phyre’s present-day story, rather than a simple recap of the first game.

- Blood sustains you and empowers your vampiric Disciplines. You’ll stalk and feed on the city’s population at night. Use your supernatural powers or raw persuasion on unsuspecting mortals to lure them into dark alleys and slake your Hunger.
- Enter the World of Darkness and rise through vampire society or rail against it. Experience Seattle - a city full of alluring, dangerous characters and factions, not to mention the mortals at stake in the clash of powers beyond their knowing.
- Hunt your way through a modern-night Seattle on the brink of an open supernatural war in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, where visceral vampire action meets a neo-noir murder mystery. Navigate the vampire Court of Seattle and its dark underbelly in this action RPG, realized by the BAFTA award-winning studio The Chinese Room.
How closely does the plot continue the original?
The sequel continues the broader Bloodlines setting, but its stated focus is Seattle’s Kindred, power balance, and politics. Paradox describes Phyre’s choices as shaping the city’s future. The available official and interview sources do not identify a specific ending from the 2004 game as canon, nor do they establish that the original protagonist returns as the central character or that their personal plot directly continues. That does not rule out references or returning characters in the game; it means those sources do not confirm a particular ending or protagonist handoff.
Will the game explain changes to Vampire: The Masquerade lore?
Developers say they account for setting changes in the story rather than assuming every player already knows them. Jason Carl said the team tried to provide explanations in the lore, or at least imply what happened, when the setting changed in ways some players might not recognize. Skidmore also said dialogue calls out changes that occurred during Phyre’s century in torpor, including changes involving the Lasombra. This gives newcomers an in-world route into the updated setting while offering returning players context for what has shifted.

Do you need to play the original first?
The confirmed setup makes Bloodlines 2 understandable as a new Seattle story with its own protagonist and historical investigation. The sources cited here do not say that playing the 2004 game is required, or that knowledge of one specific ending is needed. Playing the original can provide franchise context, but the sequel’s stated premise does not depend on following the first protagonist into the new game.
