World of Warcraft has no announced Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or other conventional console version as of August 18, 2026. Blizzard has discussed the possibility, but there is no public release date, platform listing, pre-order, or confirmed console-development roadmap. Controller support and recent interface changes are not proof of a port.
What Blizzard has said—and when
The console idea is real as a topic of discussion, but that is different from a game in production. In a 2023 interview, executive producer Holly Longdale said Blizzard talked about bringing World of Warcraft to consoles “all the time” and suggested the technical hurdles might be manageable. She did not announce Xbox development, PlayStation support, cross-play, Game Pass availability, or a launch window. The team’s focus was the planned Worldsoul Saga. GamesRadar’s 2023 interview with Longdale
In 2024, Longdale said “the dream remains,” but there was “no room for that conversation yet” while the team worked on its expansion plans. That supports describing a console edition as an open-ended possibility Blizzard had discussed—not as a greenlit port or active public project. GamesRadar’s follow-up interview
The clearest later response came from game director Ion Hazzikostas in 2025. He rejected the theory that class simplification, interface changes, or addon restrictions were being made to prepare the game for consoles. He said Blizzard had no reason to hide such a project and that its focus remained the PC experience. GameSpot’s report and Windows Central’s interview

Longdale’s 2026 question about whether players would want a dedicated controller UI shows continuing interest in the design challenge. It does not announce a console client: a controller-friendly interface could also help accessibility, handheld PC play, or playing the existing PC game from a couch. Why the Microsoft acquisition sparked Xbox speculation
Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard made Xbox an obvious platform for fans to imagine. But ownership does not automatically mean Microsoft has ordered a port, nor does it establish Game Pass access or Xbox exclusivity. A console edition would still require product and engineering work, decisions about accounts and subscriptions, platform certification, and ongoing support. Older corporate material discussing expansion onto consoles concerned the company’s broader strategy, not a specific WoW announcement. Activision Blizzard investor filing

Xbox is therefore the leading guess, not a confirmed destination. There is likewise no announced PlayStation or Nintendo version. Microsoft ownership alone cannot establish that any future console will run the game as a supported console product.
Why Midnight’s changes were mistaken for console preparation
Speculation intensified as Blizzard simplified some class designs, added more functions to the native interface, and restricted certain combat-addon capabilities in Midnight. Those changes can make the game more self-contained and could incidentally help controller play. But Hazzikostas specifically disputed the claim that the changes were preparation for consoles.

Blizzard has presented addon limits as a matter of gameplay integrity and making important information available without requiring outside tools. Its official updates describe native features such as boss warnings, damage meters, nameplate improvements, and cooldown tracking. The existence of those features is not evidence of an undisclosed port. Blizzard on combat design and addon changes and Blizzard’s Midnight UI updates
That distinction matters: a change can make a future controller interface easier to imagine without having been made for a console release. Blizzard has also described the game as a PC-focused experience, not as a console project in disguise.

Can you play WoW with a controller now?
Players can use controller-oriented setups with the Windows PC version, generally with a compatible gamepad and addons or other configuration. Blizzard has improved controller-related APIs and accessibility options that addon creators can use. That is not the same as Blizzard shipping a dedicated, fully supported gamepad interface—or certifying an Xbox or PlayStation client. Blizzard’s controller and accessibility update

- Controller-related API: Tools that can help addon authors build controller functionality for the PC game.
- Dedicated controller UI: A Blizzard-designed interface adapted for gamepad navigation; discussion of the idea is not an announcement that it is shipping.
- Console release: A version packaged and supported for a console platform. No such version has been announced.
In practice, a PC controller setup may need manual configuration, and some menus or advanced activities may remain easier with a mouse and keyboard. Addons can break or change after patches. Midnight’s combat-addon restrictions also mean addon capabilities may change; do not assume a particular setup will retain every function. Check current compatibility information for any addon you choose. Blizzard’s development notes on combat addons

Could WoW work on a console?
Other large MMOs demonstrate that subscription games can be adapted for gamepads and consoles. That establishes plausibility, not Blizzard’s plans. The harder question is how to preserve the breadth and precision of WoW while making the experience usable on a different input device and maintaining a service across platforms.
- Abilities and targeting: The game has many abilities, talents, and contextual actions. A console interface would need practical action bars, modifier schemes, target selection, and ground targeting that do not bury actions in menus.
- Interface density: Raids, Mythic+ dungeons, and PvP can demand quick access to substantial combat information. Text size, navigation, warnings, and HUD layout would need to work at a distance and with a controller.
- Social and utility tasks: Chat, mail, guild tools, auction-house searches, item links, and text entry are natural fits for a keyboard and mouse. A console version would need workable alternatives.
- Accounts and business rules: Blizzard would need to set policies for Battle.net linking, subscriptions, expansion ownership, paid services, character access, and any cross-progression. Platform-holder rules and regional arrangements could also matter. No policies for a console release have been announced.
- Endgame parity: A port would need to support demanding group content without forcing PC players to change their experience or giving either platform an unfair advantage. Maintaining clients and patches across platforms would add ongoing work.
Longdale’s comments indicate that Blizzard has discussed the technical challenge rather than declaring it impossible. They do not establish that the company has funded or scheduled the work needed to ship a product.
What would count as confirmation?
A direct Blizzard or Xbox announcement naming a platform would be the clearest evidence. An official store listing, release date, or stated development roadmap would also move the claim beyond speculation. By contrast, controller APIs, fan theories about class changes, hardware rumors, and a Windows-capable handheld or console do not confirm a supported console edition.

In particular, Windows-based hardware may offer a way to run PC software, depending on its capabilities and setup. That does not automatically mean Blizzard supports WoW as an Xbox console game, has optimized it for that device, or provides console-specific controls. Nor is there public confirmation of a 2026 or 2027 launch, a console beta, Game Pass inclusion, cross-play, or cross-progression.
Current status
As of August 18, 2026, Blizzard has discussed the possibility of bringing World of Warcraft to consoles, and its leaders have considered controller-friendly design. But no Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, or other conventional console version has been announced, and the public record does not confirm a port in active development. The PC game’s controller-related tools are a separate matter.
