There is no universal number of games that makes Game Pass a good deal. Compare the tier that includes your games with their individual purchase prices, and account for how long you’ll need access.
Start with the games you’ll actually play
Make a short list of the games you expect to play during the next month, then check whether each is currently included in the Game Pass tier and on the platform you use. Compare the subscription cost with what you would otherwise pay to buy those same games. A large catalog does not add value if you do not plan to play its titles.
As a reference point, Xbox’s US plan comparison page displayed Ultimate at $22.99 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month after a limited introductory offer. These are page values observed in 2026, not guaranteed or global prices; promotions can be restricted, and prices can change. Check the live Xbox plan comparison before deciding.
If the games you want to play would cost less to buy than a month of the tier that includes them, buying may be the better fit—especially if you want to keep playing them later. If a game you want is included and its purchase price is higher than the subscription month, Game Pass may be worthwhile, provided you can make use of the access while you are subscribed.

Choose the tier that matches your platform and needs
Xbox’s US overview currently lists four plans. Its game counts and feature descriptions are subject to change, and catalog availability varies by plan, platform, and region. A listed count does not mean a particular game is included for you; check the library for the titles you want.
| Plan | Xbox’s displayed catalog count | Notable included features |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games | Online console multiplayer and in-game benefits; no new releases on day one. |
| Premium | 200+ games | Xbox-published games join the library within one year of launch, with stated exceptions. |
| Ultimate | 500+ games | Games across console, PC, and supported devices; day-one releases and additional bundled features. |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games | Day-one titles and EA Play. Cloud gaming is not included with this plan. |
These counts and plan descriptions come from Xbox’s official Game Pass overview. Features such as cloud gaming depend on device, region, and plan. If you mainly play on PC, for example, compare PC Game Pass rather than paying for a tier whose console or supported-device features you will not use.

Account for access, timing, and renewal
Game Pass provides access, not permanent ownership. Xbox says you can play a library game while your subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. If you stop subscribing or a title leaves, you lose access unless you own it another way. For a game you expect to play over several months, compare the cost of keeping a subscription active for that time with buying the game.
Timing matters for occasional players: a subscription month may be good value if you can play the game you want during that period, but less so if you will not get to it before the next renewal or it leaves the library. Check the current catalog and, where available, Xbox’s notices about titles leaving before you plan a long playthrough.

Xbox says recurring billing is on by default. If you only want one month, turn it off or cancel before the next billing date through your Microsoft account or console. Xbox describes a possible refund for a recent recurring charge when requested within 30 days of payment, subject to terms; cancellation does not guarantee a refund. See the Xbox overview for current access and billing details.
Count bundled benefits only if you would use them
Some tiers include benefits beyond the game catalog, such as console online multiplayer, EA Play, cloud gaming, or other bundled services. They may improve the value for someone who already wants them, but do not count them as savings if you would not otherwise use them. Confirm that the benefit is part of your tier and available for your device and region before including it in your comparison.

A quick decision check
- Likely worth trying: A game you want is included in a suitable tier, and you expect to play enough during the paid period to justify the cost compared with buying it.
- Probably not worth keeping: You have no specific included games in mind, the games you want cost less to buy, or you would pay for months when you are not playing.
- Recheck the plan: You want a bundled feature such as online multiplayer, EA Play, or cloud gaming. The right tier depends on which feature you need and where you play.
Use current prices and availability for your region, then reassess when your planned games change. For someone who plays only a few games, the right question is not how big the catalog is, but whether the games and benefits they will use in a particular paid period justify that period’s price.
