What is LEGO Shrek set 72423?
LEGO identifies set 72423 as an adult display model released in 2026. It places Shrek and Donkey on a swamp-themed base, with Puss in Boots represented as a minifigure. The official listing specifies 1,403 pieces and an 18+ age rating. LEGO’s US product page describes it as a display piece and gives the dimensions as over 9.5 inches (24 cm) high, 8.5 inches (21 cm) wide, and 6 inches (16 cm) deep. The official instructions page independently confirms the set number, piece count, age rating, and year.
When accessed in 2026, LEGO’s US page listed the set at $129.99 and as available. That is a dated US listing, not a promise of today’s price or stock; check the product page before buying.
How the build and display come together
Shrek and Donkey are the main builds
The two larger characters are brick-built and mounted on the swamp base. LEGO says Shrek’s head, arms, hands, and fingers can move. Donkey’s head rotates, and its mouth, ears, and tail move. Those points of articulation offer some adjustment for display, but the set is not presented as a highly poseable action toy.

Puss in Boots is a minifigure
Puss is included at minifigure scale rather than as a third large brick-built character. That gives the scene a different visual scale: Shrek and Donkey dominate the base, while Puss reads as a small companion detail. GamesRadar+ reviewer Tabitha Baker called out the minifigure’s bright coloring and scale as drawbacks in the finished display.
The swamp details reward a closer look
The base includes the Beware Ogre sign, sunflowers, an onion, and a blue flower with red thorns. LEGO also mentions hidden details in Shrek’s stomach. In her review, Baker praised the movie references, surface texture, and clever piece use, and singled out the onion, flower, and printed signpost details. That little onion is an especially apt discovery for a build feature: it is easy to appreciate the characters first, then notice the smaller joke tucked into their setting.

How long does the LEGO Shrek set take to build?
Baker reports that she assembled the review copy across two evenings, spending four to five hours in total. That is one reviewer’s experience, not an official build-time estimate, so an individual builder’s time will vary with pace and familiarity with LEGO techniques. Baker also describes the staged satisfaction of completing bags and seeing more of the scene take shape.
What are the review’s reservations?
In her October 2, 2026 review for GamesRadar+, Baker found Donkey’s build a little too slim and wished the figures offered more convincing proportions. She also noted limited posing and some wobble when the display is moved. Her review says Shrek and Donkey feel secure when left in place, but handling or relocating the whole diorama can feel unnerving. That distinction matters if the set will live on a shelf: it is designed to be displayed, not frequently picked up and played with.

Is set 72423 worth buying?
It makes the most sense for an adult Shrek fan who wants a character-led shelf display and enjoys building a scene with recognizable film references. The appeal is the combination of Shrek and Donkey as substantial builds, Puss as a minifigure, and the swamp details—including that onion—rather than a large cast of equally sized figures or extensive posing.
At the US list price observed by LEGO in 2026, the decision comes down to whether that specific display and its details justify the spend for you. Baker’s hands-on review offers a useful counterweight: it praises the build’s texture and references while flagging Donkey’s proportions, Puss’s scale and color, and movement-related wobble. The available evidence does not establish a comparative value ranking against other sets, so weigh the display fit and current retailer price rather than treating the piece count alone as a value verdict.
