J.J. McCarthy said he did not expect to be traded from the Minnesota Vikings to the New York Giants, but called the move “an opportunity” to make the most of. TheScore reports Minnesota sent the quarterback to New York for a fifth-round pick; its accessible article text does not identify the pick’s draft year. [TheScore]
What McCarthy said about the trade
“I didn’t anticipate it,” McCarthy said Friday. “But at the end of the day, it’s an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to take advantage of.” He also expressed gratitude for his time in Minnesota and the relationships he formed there, according to theScore.
Why the Giants made the move
TheScore reports that the Giants’ need for quarterback depth followed Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury. It expected McCarthy to join New York as Jameis Winston’s backup beginning in Week 4. That is a time-sensitive depth-chart report, not confirmation of the Giants’ current lineup.
McCarthy had reportedly opened the 2026 season as Minnesota’s third-string quarterback behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz. The trade therefore offers a change of setting and a potential route to a larger role, but the article describes him as Winston’s backup rather than the starter.

What McCarthy showed in Minnesota
According to theScore’s account of his 2025 season, McCarthy started 10 games, went 6–4, threw for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and missed seven starts because of injuries. The outlet attributes the comparative figures below to TruMedia:
- Passer rating: 72.6, 35th among 36 qualifying quarterbacks.
- Completion rate: 57.6%, 35th among 36 qualifying quarterbacks.
These are season figures and rankings reported by theScore, not independently verified here. The article also says McCarthy missed his entire 2024 rookie season after August meniscus surgery. Minnesota drafted him in the first round in 2024 after he led Michigan to a national championship.

What the trade could mean for McCarthy and New York
For McCarthy, the move creates a chance to start over in a new coaching environment after an uneven, injury-interrupted Minnesota tenure. Giants head coach John Harbaugh said, “He can throw it. He can run it. He can make plays.” TheScore reports that Harbaugh also called McCarthy talented while noting areas for improvement based on his Minnesota performance.
For New York, the reported fifth-round cost is a relatively limited commitment to add quarterback depth, but it does not establish how much playing time McCarthy will receive. The immediate role described in the article is backing up Winston; any greater opportunity depends on the team’s needs and McCarthy’s performance.
