Jack Hughes scored with 1:37 left in overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers in New Jersey’s home opener on October 1, 2026. Jesper Bratt assisted on the wrist shot at Prudential Center in Newark.
How the Devils–Flyers game unfolded
Philadelphia opened the scoring when Rasmus Ristolainen redirected a point shot from Travis Sanheim in the first period. Dougie Hamilton tied it for New Jersey at 17:59 of the second, sending a point shot off the left post and in.
Sanheim put the Flyers back in front early in the third with a slap shot assisted by Sean Couturier. Luke Hughes made it 2-2 at 9:44, with Luke Evangelista assisting, setting up Jack Hughes to decide the game in overtime.

Jack Hughes finished a wrist shot with 1:37 remaining in overtime, assisted by Bratt. Philadelphia goalie Joseph Woll made 41 saves; New Jersey’s Jake Allen made 23. The Associated Press reported attendance of 16,539.

All four goals in regulation were scored by defensemen, according to the Associated Press. Hamilton’s goal also marked his 200th point with New Jersey in his 306th game for the club, the AP reported; it described him as the second-fastest Devils defenseman to reach that mark, behind Scott Stevens at 250 games.
Olympic context for Jack Hughes
The Associated Press described Hughes as having led Team USA to gold at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics the previous winter. The same October 1, 2026 report listed his 2025-26 season totals as 77 points and 27 goals, despite missing 21 games with a hand injury.

What the result means in context
The AP game account noted that Philadelphia had lost 7-0 to Pittsburgh the previous night and that New Jersey returned its top eight scorers from the prior season. Those details frame the matchup, but the decisive sequence was New Jersey’s third-period equalizer followed by Hughes’ overtime finish.
