Utah Jazz center Jusuf Nurkić says he has not seen a rookie arrive with Darryn Peterson’s level of maturity in his 13 NBA seasons. The veteran also says teammates sometimes have to tell Peterson to leave the gym. Those are early training-camp impressions, not proof of what the rookie’s NBA role or results will be.
What Nurkić and Hardy have noticed
Nurkić’s praise is striking because it is grounded in his own time around NBA players. “I’ve never seen in my 13 years a kid coming into the league and be that mature for his age,” the Jazz center said, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. He also described Peterson as so committed to training that teammates nearly have to tell him to stay out of the gym.
Head coach Will Hardy offered a similar assessment of Peterson’s approach. Hardy called him “a very serious young man when it comes to the work he’s doing every day” and said he has shown he can learn quickly. Hardy also described Peterson’s transition to the Utah team as seamless, the Tribune reported.
These are assessments from people working with Peterson, rather than an independent measure of his character. They describe how the rookie has approached the early days with the Jazz.

How Peterson describes learning from veterans
Peterson has framed the move from college to the NBA as a change in the people around him as much as a change in competition. In his account to the Tribune, veteran teammates challenge him every day and have become mentors—a contrast with college teammates closer to his age.
He has also described success in terms of contribution rather than individual recognition. “Impact and winning are just the main thing on my mind right now. So doing that every night,” Peterson said.

The praise does not settle Peterson’s role
When Utah held media day on September 29, its final starting position was still open, with Peterson among four candidates, according to The Salt Lake Tribune’s report. Hardy said lineups can change. Peterson had not been named a starter in that account, and camp praise should not be read as a lineup announcement.
Jazz president of basketball operations Austin Ainge praised Peterson’s “intensity, work ethic, and maturity that is unique,” while also noting that a rookie season brings ups and downs, the Tribune reported. The combination matters: Utah’s early confidence in Peterson’s habits coexists with realistic expectations about adjustment and uncertainty about his place in the rotation.

Early impressions, with a little more context
The Tribune’s October 1 report said Peterson appeared more comfortable at Jazz media day than during his lone season at Kansas. It also reported that full-body cramping issues caused him to miss multiple games in college, and that multiple sources told the newspaper he was never fully healthy. That is reported past context, not a diagnosis or evidence here of his current condition.
The same report described Peterson as having been quiet with the media, including a past self-description as an “anti-social loner” when asked about national attention. It also said teammates saw him fitting in with Utah. Neither a single remark nor early impressions from teammates should be treated as a complete picture of his personality.

For now, the clearest takeaway is about process: Nurkić and Hardy have praised Peterson’s maturity, daily work and willingness to learn, while Peterson says veteran teammates are pushing and mentoring him. Whether those habits translate into a particular role or on-court impact remains to be established once the regular season begins.
