In a 2026 report on an excerpt from his memoir, Bloodlines, he described the part as “the shred of hope that I might get my life back in some capacity, and I had to believe it was possible.” The role was for Ben Affleck’s planned solo Batman film, which was ultimately scrapped.
How the Deathstroke offer mattered to Manganiello
Manganiello’s account appears in his memoir Bloodlines, according to Tbreak’s October 8, 2026 report on an excerpt from the book. He described the role not simply as a career opportunity, but as a reason to imagine a future beyond his illness: “The role contained the shred of hope that I might get my life back in some capacity, and I had to believe it was possible.”
That is Manganiello’s interpretation of what helped him through recovery, not a medical conclusion that a film role treated his illness. Tbreak says the memoir recounts that he collapsed while working on the series Six in North Carolina in 2016, was treated for an autoimmune illness doctors could not explain, and underwent surgery that removed his large intestine. The report also says his weight fell from 235 pounds to 176 pounds. These are personal details attributed to the memoir excerpt by Tbreak; they are not independently verified clinical records.
The report says the Deathstroke offer arrived as Manganiello was beginning to recover. He saw the opportunity as a reason to believe he might regain some of his life. The excerpt’s original link was not accessible to the reporting outlet, so the account and its medical specifics should be understood as Tbreak’s summary of the memoir.

Which Batman film had Manganiello cast as Deathstroke?
He was cast as Deathstroke for Ben Affleck’s planned standalone Batman movie. TIME reported the casting in September 2016, citing confirmation from DC’s Geoff Johns. TheWrap later reported that Manganiello expected to begin shooting in spring 2017; in an October 2016 interview, he said, “Great man, just getting ready to go shoot Batman in the Spring.” That was the plan at the time, not evidence that production began.
The film did not happen. Manganiello later told Entertainment Tonight that Affleck’s Batman movie had been cancelled and the project shifted toward Matt Reeves’ film starring Robert Pattinson. It is therefore more accurate to call Deathstroke a role Manganiello was cast to play in a scrapped film than a character he played in a released solo Batman movie.
