It is designed for a dedicated x86 PC that boots straight into games stored as “cartridges” on SD cards or other removable media. A retro-style BIOS menu handles game selection and saves, avoiding the usual desktop, launcher and account workflow. That makes Kazeta distinctive, but not universal: hardware support is selective, Windows-game compatibility varies, and the operating system is a poor match for DRM-heavy or online-dependent libraries.
Kazeta is published at kazeta.org and its source is available under the MIT license on GitHub. The releases page lists Kazeta 2025.0, dated August 17, 2025; repository activity should not be mistaken for a newer stable release.
What Kazeta is—and what it is not
Kazeta is a dedicated Linux gaming OS for x86 PCs, intended mainly for a machine connected to one TV or monitor. Its goal is closer to a late-1990s console than to a desktop distribution: power on, choose a game, play, and return to a BIOS-like menu when the cartridge is removed.
The “cartridge” is not proprietary hardware. It is a directory on an SD card, USB drive or other removable storage that Kazeta recognizes as a game. The project presents this as an offline, launcher-free way to use legally obtained DRM-free games. It does not turn every PC into a compatible console, replace Windows, or provide game files.
#1 Best Overall
- 【AMD Ryzen 7330U】 – The Efficiency-Tuned Powerhouse,AMD Ryzen 7330U (Zen 3, SMT, 4C/8T) in KAMRUI P2 mini PC crushes rivals: Intel i3-10110U (2C/4T, 2019) and N95 (4 efficiency cores, no HT, single-channel memory). Vs predecessor Ryzen 3 4300U (4C/4T): ~50% faster single-core, ~46% multi-core, 8MB L3 cache (vs 4MB). Beats both Intel chips hugely in multi-core, making heavy multitasking, coding, data work smooth at just 15W TDP. High-end power in a cool, efficient box.
- 【AMD Radeon Graphics】– Triple 4K Vision & Fluidity,The integrated Radeon Graphics (based on the modern Vega architecture with 6 CUs) is a visual beast, outclassing the iGPU offerings from both AMD's prior generation and Intel. The Intel UHD Graphics (i3-10110U/N95) struggles with single-channel memory and low execution units, crippling its gaming performance and barely handling basic 4K video without stuttering. While the older Radeon Vega 5 (4300U) was decent, our 7330U's Radeon Graphics (6 CUs) pushes the boundaries, delivering higher graphics clock speeds (up to 1.8GHz) and significantly better rendering capabilities. It can drive triple 4K@60Hz displays with zero lag, edit photos/videos.
- 【Generous Storage & Easy Expansion】The KAMRUI Pinova P2 mini desktop computers comes with 16GB LPDDR4X RAM (higher frequency, lower power) for buttery‑smooth multitasking, and a 256GB M.2 SSD for blazing fast boot‑up, quick file transfers, and no more long loading screens. It also features two storage expansion slots (1x M.2 2280 SATA/NVMe PCIe 3.0 slot + 1x M.2 2280 SATA slot), supporting up to 4TB total (not included). You’ll have all the space you need for projects, media, and important data.
- 【Triple 4K Display Output】The KAMRUI Pinova P2 mini desktop pc is equipped with HDMI 2.0 ×1 + DP 1.4 ×1 + USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C ×1 (with DP Alt Mode), enabling simultaneous triple 4K@60Hz output. Game media and metadata
A cart contains the game files and a .kzi file describing how Kazeta should start them. The documented fields include Name, Id, Exec, Icon and optional GamescopeOptions and Runtime. The full syntax is documented in the KZI reference.
Name=Shovel Knight
Id=shovel-knight
Exec=ShovelKnight.exe
Icon=icon.png
Runtime=windows
A Linux title may need to be launched from its content directory:
Name=Shovel Knight
Id=shovel-knight
Exec=cd content && ./ShovelKnight
Icon=icon.png
Runtime=linux
Quote paths containing spaces or special characters. Make every cart’s Id unique: the documentation warns that duplicate IDs can cause save-data collisions or overwrites.
Runtimes
Runtimes supply the environment a cart needs. Kazeta documents Linux, Windows and emulation-oriented runtimes, with references that can identify a runtime name, version or complete runtime filename; see Runtimes and Technical Details. A Windows runtime can make many Windows games possible, but it does not guarantee compatibility. Installers, proprietary codecs, copy protection, launchers, anti-cheat and network authentication can still prevent a game from starting.

The 2.5G high-speed Ethernet eliminates lag for online competitive gaming and large file transmission.
The BIOS and saves
With no cart inserted, Kazeta opens a console-inspired BIOS interface. The project advertises automatic save capture, playtime tracking, save viewing and deletion, and backup to external media. Treat automatic capture as a convenience rather than a guarantee: keep regular backups, and avoid duplicate cart IDs.
What games can run?
- Native Linux games: generally the simplest category when the executable, permissions and dependencies are correct.
- Windows games: depend on Kazeta’s Windows compatibility runtime and may need a custom
Execcommand. A game that works in Steam Proton is not automatically a known-good Kazeta cart. - Emulated games: depend on the emulator runtime, supported game format, controller mapping and configuration.
- DRM-free GOG and itch.io games: fit the offline model particularly well, provided the individual title runs in the selected runtime.
- Problematic categories: games requiring Steam, Epic, Battle.net or another launcher, persistent accounts, subscriptions, online authentication or kernel anti-cheat are likely to be unsuitable.
Kazeta’s site claims support for native Linux games, Windows games, GOG and itch.io releases, older and modern DRM-free PC games, and classic console emulation. Those are supported workflows, not a promise that every title in each category works.
Hardware requirements and practical recommendations
| Component or condition | Published requirement |
|---|---|
| Memory | At least 4 GB RAM |
| Internal storage | At least 32 GB |
| AMD graphics | Radeon RX 400 series or newer |
| Nvidia graphics | GTX 1600 series or newer |
| Intel graphics | 2017-and-newer GPUs may work, but compatibility may be poor |
| Display | One connected TV or monitor |
| Hybrid graphics | Unsupported |
| Virtual machines | Unsupported |
| Same-disk dual boot | Unsupported |
| Firmware | Secure Boot disabled; legacy BIOS unsupported |
| Storage firmware | Intel RST disabled |
| Controller | 8BitDo Ultimate 2C through its wireless dongle or wired USB; Bluetooth is unsupported |
These are minimum or compatibility conditions, not a performance recommendation for modern games. AMD Radeon hardware is the safest direction in the project’s documentation. An old Intel office PC may boot but remain a poor choice for reliable game support; a laptop with switchable graphics is explicitly excluded. A dedicated SSD or spare machine is preferable to risking an existing system.
Kazeta lists the GEEKOM A5 2025 Edition as officially supported hardware. That status confirms compatibility validation, not high-end performance; its integrated graphics make it more appropriate for lighter, older, indie and emulated games than for demanding modern releases.

How to install Kazeta safely
- Download the installer from the official site.
- Use balenaEtcher to write it to a USB stick. Kazeta’s wiki says Ventoy and Rufus do not work for this installer.
- Back up the target computer and verify which disk will be erased. If necessary, disconnect disks containing important files.
- In firmware, disable Secure Boot, disable Intel RST if enabled, and confirm the machine uses UEFI rather than legacy BIOS.
- Connect a keyboard and boot the target PC from the USB stick.
- Follow the installer’s on-screen directions, using the official installation guide for the current procedure.
How to make a game cart
- Use a game you legally own or obtained from a legitimate DRM-free source.
- Copy its files to an SD card, USB drive or other removable medium.
- Add a correctly written
.kzifile, selecting the runtime that matches the game. - Set
Execto the real executable and quote paths containing spaces. Add an icon if desired. - Give the cart a unique
Id. - Insert and test the cart on the dedicated Kazeta PC.
- Back up both the cart and its saves to separate storage.
There is no single directory layout that works for every game. Some titles need a command such as changing into a content directory first; others need runtime-specific options.
Troubleshooting common failures
The installer will not boot
- Confirm Secure Boot is off and the boot mode is UEFI, not legacy BIOS.
- Rewrite the USB with balenaEtcher rather than Ventoy or Rufus.
- Select the correct USB device in the firmware boot menu and keep a keyboard connected.
The installer cannot see the drive
- Disable Intel RST and check that the drive appears in firmware.
- Remove unsupported hybrid storage configurations.
- Do not attempt a same-disk dual-boot installation.
The controller does not respond
- Use the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C’s included wireless dongle or a wired USB connection.
- Do not rely on Bluetooth, which Kazeta’s requirements page lists as unsupported.
- Use the keyboard for initial setup and diagnosis.
A cart appears but will not launch
- Check the
.kzispelling, executable path, permissions and quoting. - Verify the runtime and any Gamescope options.
- Confirm the cart ID is unique.
- Rule out DRM, launcher, anti-cheat and network requirements.
- Consult Logs, the runtime documentation and the KZI reference.
Kazeta compared with other console-style Linux systems
| System | Best fit | Key difference from Kazeta |
|---|---|---|
| Kazeta | Dedicated AMD PC, DRM-free games, emulation and removable collections | Cartridge directories, BIOS-style management and offline-first design |
| Bazzite | Steam-style libraries, desktop access, broader general-purpose use | Fedora/Universal Blue system with a conventional library model and a bazzite-deck variant |
| Lakka | Primarily classic-console emulation | Lightweight LibreELEC/RetroArch distribution, not a modern DRM-free PC-game platform |
| Playtron GameOS | Users wanting storefront integration | Designed around services such as Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG rather than physical-style carts |
| SteamOS-style setups | Large storefront libraries and established PC-game compatibility layers | Usually broader game and account integration, but less focused on Kazeta’s removable-media and BIOS experience |
Who should use Kazeta?
Kazeta makes sense for someone with a compatible AMD desktop or mini PC, a DRM-free collection, a TV and a willingness to dedicate a disk or machine to a focused appliance. It is especially appealing for indie games, older PC titles, emulation and households that want a simple offline interface after the initial preparation.
Choose something else if you need Windows applications, a conventional Linux desktop, Steam/Epic/Battle.net as first-class services, online multiplayer, cloud-dependent saves, broad laptop support or effortless compatibility with every Proton game. Kazeta’s preparation work and smaller support ecosystem are the price of its intentional console-like workflow.
What to check before buying hardware
- Verify the GPU generation, with AMD Radeon the safer general choice.
- Confirm UEFI controls, Secure Boot and Intel RST can be changed.
- Avoid hybrid-graphics laptops and plan for a dedicated disk.
- Allow more than the 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage minimum when games and carts require it.
- Provide several USB ports for installation media, storage and a controller dongle.
- Buy a controller that supports the documented 2.4-GHz dongle or wired mode, not Bluetooth alone.
- Use reputable SD cards or portable SSDs and maintain independent save backups.
Bottom line
Kazeta is best understood as a specialized Linux appliance for DRM-free, cartridge-like PC gaming. It offers a genuinely different ownership and save-management model, but its hardware rules, per-game runtime setup and weak fit for launcher- and online-dependent titles mean it should be installed on a compatible dedicated machine—not treated as a universal replacement for Windows or SteamOS.
