If kbdarmw.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, Windows or an application is requesting the Western Armenian keyboard layout. It is a Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET library, or ordinary game dependency.
The safest repair is to restore Windows components through Windows Update, the Armenian keyboard settings, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC tools. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website and copy it into an application folder.
The exact errors you may see
Windows loader messages can appear in several forms:
- “kbdarmw.dll is missing from your computer”
- “The program can’t start because kbdarmw.dll is missing from your computer”
- “kbdarmw.dll was not found”
- “There was a problem starting kbdarmw.dll”
- “kbdarmw.dll could not be loaded”
- “kbdarmw.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
These are common Windows DLL-loader formulations. The wording does not, by itself, prove that the application originally shipped with this file or that the file should be copied beside the program.

The 60-second answer
- Restart Windows and install pending updates.
- Check whether the Armenian Western keyboard layout is installed.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM first, then SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart again.
- If only one old application fails, repair or reinstall that application from its official publisher.
- If the file exists in an unusual folder or lacks a Microsoft signature, investigate it instead of restoring it.
Microsoft identifies this file as the Western Armenian Keyboard Layout, also displayed in current Windows documentation as Armenian Western (Legacy). Its keyboard identifier is 0001042B, and it belongs to Microsoft Windows. You can review Microsoft’s keyboard identifier and layout documentation here.
What is kbdarmw.dll?
kbdarmw.dll is a keyboard-layout module. It helps Windows interpret keystrokes according to the Western Armenian layout. It is not a general-purpose application runtime.
The file is normally associated with:
- Description: Western Armenian Keyboard Layout
- Display name: Armenian Western (Legacy)
- Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Product: Microsoft Windows Operating System
- Keyboard identifier:
0001042B
Windows installations differ. The file may depend on the installed language and keyboard components, Windows edition, and Windows build. Do not assume that every Windows computer must contain it, and do not use a file version, size, or hash from another Windows release as a universal standard.
Why would a keyboard DLL stop an application?
An application can request a Windows keyboard layout while it starts, creates a text field, loads an input method, or restores a saved language preference. Older software may also make a poor assumption that a particular keyboard-layout module is present.
That creates two different possibilities:
- Windows has a damaged or incomplete keyboard component.
- The application is damaged, obsolete, or requesting the wrong path.
If multiple programs and Windows features show the problem, treat it as a Windows or language-component issue. If only one old game or program fails, the application is more likely to be the problem.
Where should kbdarmw.dll be located?
On a standard Windows installation, the native file belongs under:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, Windows also maintains a separate 32-bit system directory:
%windir%SysWOW64
The names are confusing: System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit applications. A 32-bit application may therefore interact with the 32-bit system environment.
This does not mean you should copy the file manually between those folders. Microsoft documents the separate system-directory behavior for 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows here.
To check the file:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Press Enter.
- Search for
kbdarmw.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Details tab and the Digital Signatures tab.
A genuine Windows copy should be in an appropriate Windows system directory and identify Microsoft as the signer. A filename alone is not proof that the file is genuine.

What caused the error?
The most likely causes are:
- A protected Windows file was corrupted or removed.
- An interrupted update damaged system components.
- The Armenian language or keyboard layout was only partially installed.
- A cleanup utility removed or altered a protected file.
- Antivirus software quarantined a file.
- Disk corruption affected Windows files.
- An incomplete Windows upgrade left language resources inconsistent.
- One application has a damaged installation or an obsolete loader.
- A 32-bit application is requesting an incorrect or private copy.
- Malware or tampering placed a file with the same name outside Windows directories.
The timing matters. Think back to whether the error appeared after a Windows update, language change, cleanup operation, antivirus alert, disk problem, or application installation.
Fix kbdarmw.dll errors in the right order
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Start with the least invasive repair.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, open the program again. If the error remains, continue rather than repeatedly reinstalling unrelated runtimes.

2. Check and reinstall the Armenian keyboard layout
If the problem began after adding, removing, or changing an Armenian keyboard, repair that language entry.
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Language & region on Windows 11, or Language on Windows 10.
- Select the relevant Armenian language entry.
- Open Language options.
- Review the installed keyboards.
- If the affected keyboard is present but appears damaged, remove it.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to the same settings page.
- Add the keyboard again.
- Restart once more.
The exact labels vary by Windows release and language configuration. Microsoft’s current instructions for managing keyboard layouts are available here.
If Windows will not remove or add the keyboard, install pending updates first and then try again. Do not solve this by downloading kbdarmw.dll separately.
3. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted protected Windows file. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired source to check protected system files.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run the commands separately, in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may take time and can appear to pause. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC and explains the repair procedure here.
How to interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no protected-file violation. The problem may be limited to one application, a language profile, or an incorrect file path.
- SFC found corrupt files and successfully repaired them means restart and test the affected program.
- SFC found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them means run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still fails, use a matching Windows installation source or a Windows repair reinstall.
- DISM cannot obtain the source files means Windows Update or the local component store may be damaged. Microsoft documents using matching installation media with
/Sourceand/LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture.
Running SFC repeatedly without checking its result is not a repair strategy. If the same problem returns, move to the language, application, Defender, or Windows recovery steps below.

Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the Windows issues that make manual repair difficult, including situations where you are repeatedly hunting through SFC and DISM results without knowing what changed; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Defender may have quarantined a genuine system file, or it may have detected a suspicious file using the same name.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
kbdarmw.dll. - Note the detected path and action.
Do not restore a file merely because an application requests it. First check whether the file was under %windir%System32 or %windir%SysWOW64, then inspect its digital signature. A copy in a downloads folder, temporary directory, game folder, or unknown application directory deserves further investigation.
If the file is a verified Microsoft copy and Defender quarantined it incorrectly, follow the available Windows Security restore process. Microsoft explains Protection History here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Defender repeatedly quarantines the file, leave it quarantined until the file and system are verified. Run a full Windows Security scan. Do not create an exclusion for an arbitrary copy.
5. Repair the application if only one program fails
A well-behaved application should use Windows’ keyboard-layout infrastructure rather than ship a random private copy of a Microsoft keyboard DLL. If Windows works normally and only one program reports the error, repair that program.
Windows 11 application repair
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the program from its official publisher.
Some desktop applications do not offer these options. Use the application’s own repair or verify-files feature instead.
Games and older programs
If only an old game fails:
- Use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity feature.
- Install available updates for the game.
- Reinstall the launcher or application from its official source if verification fails.
- Test whether the application works under another Windows user profile.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit and whether it contains an incorrect private DLL.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because the message mentions a DLL. Those packages are not the normal source of kbdarmw.dll.

If DISM cannot repair Windows, SFC still reports corruption, or several system components are failing, use a repair reinstall rather than manually replacing DLLs.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the feature is available. Microsoft describes it here.

If that option is unavailable, use a matching Windows installation source or consider a Reset or clean reinstall after backing up important files.
Why downloading kbdarmw.dll is a bad fix
Standalone DLL download sites sites are risky because the file may be:
- Modified to contain malware.
- From a different Windows build.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing a valid Microsoft signature.
- Placed in the wrong directory.
- Incompatible with Windows servicing.
Manual copying can also hide the real cause, such as corruption, a failed language installation, or an application requesting an invalid path. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows language settings, Microsoft repair tools, and matching Microsoft installation media.
Do not copy a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why regsvr32 is not the answer
Do not run:
regsvr32 kbdarmw.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain ActiveX or COM components. A keyboard-layout DLL is loaded by Windows’ keyboard infrastructure, not normally registered like an ActiveX control.
Running regsvr32 is unlikely to repair a missing or corrupted keyboard layout and may produce an unrelated error. Use DISM, SFC, Windows language settings, or application repair instead.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit paths carefully
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the redirected 32-bit system environment. This is why replacing a file based on a path found in an online guide can make matters worse.
Before drawing conclusions, record:
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The application’s architecture, if known.
- The exact path Windows or the application reports.
- Whether the file is in
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder. - Whether the file’s signature identifies Microsoft.
Never substitute a 64-bit file for a 32-bit one, or a file from another Windows build.

FAQ
Is kbdarmw.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component. However, a file with the correct name is not automatically safe. Verify its location and Microsoft digital signature, and investigate copies outside the Windows system directories.
Is kbdarmw.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. It is the Western Armenian keyboard-layout module. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the default repair.
Does every Windows computer need this file?
No. Its presence can depend on installed language and keyboard components, Windows edition, and Windows build.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. Keyboard-layout DLLs are not normally repaired by regsvr32.
Why does only one game report the error?
The game may be damaged, obsolete, or requesting a Windows keyboard layout incorrectly. Verify or reinstall the game from its official source after checking Windows components.
Can I copy kbdarmw.dll from another computer?
Do not do this routinely. Different Windows builds, editions, languages, and architectures can use different system files. Use Windows repair tools or matching Microsoft installation media instead.
What if Windows says the file is “not designed to run on Windows”?
That can indicate corruption, an incompatible file, a damaged application, or a file from the wrong architecture or Windows build. Check its path and signature, run DISM followed by SFC, and repair the affected application if the problem is limited to one program.
