“kbdinguj.dll was not found,” “kbdinguj.dll is missing,” and “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdinguj.dll was not found” are Windows errors, not signs that you need a random DLL download. kbdinguj.dll is the Microsoft Windows Gujarati Keyboard Layout component, and the safest repair is to restore Windows components and Gujarati input support through Windows.
The 60-second answer
Do this first:
- Open Start, type
cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator. - Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- When it finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged or missing copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for missing or corrupted Windows components.
If the error remains, reinstall the Gujarati language or keyboard, check Windows Security quarantine, and then consider System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall.
Do not download kbdinguj.dll from a DLL archive. A downloaded file can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, permissions, or malicious code, and it does not repair the component store that Windows uses to maintain system files.

What is kbdinguj.dll?
kbdinguj.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout DLL. Its description is Gujarati Keyboard Layout, and it provides the character mappings Windows uses when the Gujarati keyboard layout is installed and selected.
It is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET runtime, game, or ordinary third-party application. It is normally located under:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, architecture-specific redirection can also involve %windir%SysWOW64. The exact copy depends on the Windows release, architecture, and installed component version. Do not assume that the same file must appear in both folders.
The file is normally safe when it is in the Windows system directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. A file with the same name in a program folder, temporary directory, download folder, or user profile deserves additional scrutiny.
Is it required for Windows?
Most Windows installations do not need to load the Gujarati layout constantly. The file is generally relevant when Gujarati input or a related language feature is installed or selected.
Removing Gujarati input may prevent Windows from trying to load the layout, but that does not repair a damaged Windows installation. If the file is missing because system components are corrupted, the underlying problem can affect other Windows files later.
Why the error appears
The common causes are:

The wording may mention a game or application because that process attempted to load the file. That does not prove the program owns kbdinguj.dll. Windows input components can be loaded indirectly by applications that interact with the system keyboard.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important repair for a missing or corrupted kbdinguj.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for the command to finish.
The command examines the running Windows installation and repairs its component store. It may take several minutes and can appear to pause. Do not close the window while it is working.
If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue with SFC. If it reports that source files could not be found, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the command again. Persistent DISM failures can indicate damaged Windows Update components or storage problems.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and let the verification reach 100 percent.

Restart after the repair, even if the command does not explicitly request it. Then press Windows key + Spacebar to see whether the Gujarati layout can be selected.

Fix 2: Add Gujarati and its keyboard again
If the Gujarati language feature was removed or damaged, reinstall it through Settings.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Click Add a language.
- Search for Gujarati.
- Select Gujarati, click Next, and install the available language features.
- After installation, select the Gujarati entry under Preferred languages.
- Click the three dots next to it and choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Add the Gujarati keyboard layout.
If Gujarati is already listed, open its Language options page and remove the damaged keyboard entry if Windows allows it. Restart, return to the same page, and add the keyboard again.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Open Language.
- Select Add a preferred language.
- Search for and select Gujarati.
- Select Next, then install the language features.
- Select Gujarati in the language list.
- Click Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard and choose the Gujarati layout.
Restart or sign out if Windows requests it. Test the layout with Windows key + Spacebar.
Reinstalling Gujarati may cause Windows to obtain the component through its servicing system or Windows Update rather than simply placing one visible DLL in the folder. That is expected. The goal is to restore the complete language feature and its servicing metadata, not just to create a file with the correct name.
Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates
An interrupted or incomplete update can leave language components in an inconsistent state.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when requested.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further update is offered.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
After updating, run DISM and SFC again if the error continues. If Windows Update itself reports errors, use the Windows Update troubleshooter available from the recovery and troubleshooting settings, then retry the component repair.

kbdinguj.dll is a keyboard-layout component, not a hardware driver. Device Manager is therefore not the normal place to repair it. You do not need to update a display, chipset, sound, or keyboard driver merely because this DLL is missing.
If the problem began with a broader keyboard or input-device failure, you can check Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices on Windows 11 or Settings → Devices on Windows 10. For hardware-specific problems, open Device Manager, expand Keyboards, right-click the affected hardware, and choose Update driver or Uninstall device, then restart. That addresses hardware enumeration, not the missing Windows layout DLL.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged or falsely detected system file. Do not disable antivirus protection just to restore an unknown copy.

- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
kbdinguj.dll. - Expand the event and review its location, detection name, and action.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file was in the Windows system directory.
- The event clearly identifies a quarantine action rather than a confirmed malware detection.
- The Windows installation and Microsoft signature can be trusted.
- You have scanned the system and found no broader compromise.
If the file was located in a temporary or user-writable folder, do not restore it. Allow Windows Security to remove it, run a full scan, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
After a legitimate restoration, restart and run SFC again. Windows may replace the restored file with the correct serviced copy.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after an update, software installation, driver change, or system configuration change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.

- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review what may be removed or rolled back.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can roll back applications, drivers, updates, and settings. Save open work before starting. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with Windows repair options instead.
Fix 6: Repair-reinstall Windows 11
On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows Update can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
This option requires Windows to be able to obtain the repair files. If the option is unavailable, use the normal Windows installation or recovery process appropriate for the computer, after backing up important data.
A repair reinstall is more appropriate than manually replacing kbdinguj.dll when DISM and SFC cannot restore it or when multiple protected Windows files are damaged.

Do not run this as a general repair:
regsvr32 kbdinguj.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registering certain self-registering COM and ActiveX DLLs. A keyboard-layout DLL is loaded by the Windows input system; it is not normally a COM server that needs registration.
The command may produce messages such as “entry point was not found” or “the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.” Those messages do not mean the file needs a different copy. They mean the registration tool is inappropriate for this component.
Do not copy the DLL manually
Copying kbdinguj.dll from another PC is unsafe because the systems may differ in:

- File permissions
- Component-store metadata
- Digital signature and catalog relationships
- Language-feature installation state
A mismatched file can create another “Bad Image” error or be replaced during the next update. Avoid DLL download sites websites entirely. The safe sources are Windows Update, the installed Windows component store, Windows recovery tools, and the official Gujarati language settings.
Check the file location and signature
If you can locate the file:
- Right-click
kbdinguj.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and check its location.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
A normal system copy belongs in the Windows system directory. A same-named file under an application directory, temporary folder, or user profile is not automatically legitimate. Scan unexpected copies with Windows Security and do not replace the normal system copy with them.
System32 and SysWOW64 are not interchangeable
On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains native 64-bit system files, while 32-bit processes can be redirected to SysWOW64. This naming is confusing, but it is managed by Windows.
Never copy a 32-bit DLL over a 64-bit system file or the reverse. Do not use a file from another architecture simply because the filename matches.
If only one program reports the error
If Windows input works normally but one old application reports kbdinguj.dll, the program may be loading a Windows component incorrectly or may have its own damaged files.

Try this order:
- Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Confirm that Gujarati is installed correctly.
- Update the affected application from its official source.
- Use the application’s own Repair option if available.
- Uninstall and reinstall the application.
- Contact the application’s developer if only that program continues to fail.
Do not assume the application owns the DLL or install a copy inside its program folder.
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete kbdinguj.dll?
No. Do not delete a system copy to stop an error. If you do not use Gujarati input, remove the Gujarati language and keyboard from Windows Settings instead. If another copy exists outside the Windows directory, scan it before taking action.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
No evidence indicates that those packages are required to repair this keyboard-layout DLL. Installing them is not the correct response to a missing kbdinguj.dll message. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and Gujarati language repair.
Is kbdinguj.dll malware?
The legitimate Windows component is a Microsoft Gujarati keyboard-layout DLL. Location and signature matter. A file with the same name in an unexpected directory can be suspicious, so scan it rather than assuming every copy is safe.
Why does the error mention a game or application?
That process may have been the one that attempted to load the Windows input component. It does not necessarily own the file. Repair Windows first, then repair the application if it remains the only program with a problem.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If the result remains unchanged, inspect the CBS repair log, check whether Windows Update works, investigate disk errors, and use System Restore or the Windows 11 repair-reinstall option.
Will reinstalling Gujarati always restore the exact DLL?
It should restore the required Windows input feature through the supported servicing path, but the exact binary depends on the Windows release, architecture, and component version. The objective is a healthy Windows installation, not a particular file size or hash.
What is the safest fix?
For a genuine missing or damaged kbdinguj.dll, run elevated DISM followed by SFC, restart, and reinstall Gujarati input if necessary. Avoid isolated DLL downloads, manual copying, and regsvr32.
