“kbdphags.dll is missing”: which fix applies to you
The kbdphags.dll error may appear as:
- “The program can’t start because kbdphags.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdphags.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading kbdphags.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “kbdphags.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The file kbdphags.dll is missing or corrupted.”
Start with the path that matches your situation:
- The error appears during sign-in, language switching, or keyboard changes: repair Windows components, then reinstall the affected keyboard layout.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- Only one application reports the error: repair Windows first, then repair or reinstall that application.
- The file exists in an application folder or another unusual location: treat it as suspicious and scan the computer.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: review the CBS log, then consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.

Do not begin by downloading kbdphags.dll from a DLL website. This is a Windows keyboard-layout component, not a normal application runtime file.
What is kbdphags.dll?
kbdphags.dll is the Microsoft Windows Phags-pa Keyboard Layout component. Phags-pa is a Windows keyboard layout identified by 000A0C00 in Microsoft’s keyboard identifier documentation.
The file can be present even if you never deliberately selected the Phags-pa layout. Its presence alone does not indicate malware. Windows input services may load keyboard-layout components while processing language, sign-in, or input settings.
The exact path, version, architecture, and file metadata vary by Windows release, servicing build, and system architecture. On a normal installation, Windows system components are stored in Windows system directories. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. SysWOW64 is not a backup directory.

A normal application may mention kbdphags.dll because it invokes Windows keyboard or text-input services. The application does not necessarily own the file, and reinstalling the application is not the first repair step when Windows itself is missing or corrupt.
Fix 1: install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC
This is the safest repair for a missing, damaged, or incorrectly serviced Windows component.
Install pending updates
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
After restarting, repeat the action that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.
- When it completes, leave the elevated Command Prompt open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store and supplies the repair source that SFC uses. A successful result means the operation completed without reporting an error. If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, finish Windows Update, restart, and run the command again. Persistent DISM errors may require Windows recovery media or an in-place repair using a matching Windows release.

In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The useful results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files appear intact. Investigate the application, dependency, quarantine history, or the exact path named by the error.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue to the CBS log section below.

Fix 2: restore the keyboard layout through Settings
Use this fix when the error appears while changing languages, switching input methods, or signing in.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the language associated with the keyboard.
- Select the … menu beside it.
- Select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Add the required layout.
- If the layout is not listed, install the language that supplies it.
To refresh a damaged layout, select the affected language and remove the unwanted keyboard layout where Windows allows it. Restart, return to the same screen, and add it again.

Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Select the affected language.
- Select Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the required layout.
Microsoft’s language and keyboard settings guide explains the current layout-management paths. If Settings cannot add or remove the layout, run DISM and SFC first rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 3: check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file after a false detection, although restoring a quarantined file without verification is unsafe.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
kbdphags.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, and action taken.
Only consider restoring the file if it was in the expected Windows system location, belongs to the correct Windows installation, and has trustworthy Microsoft signing information. Microsoft warns that a restored threat may be detected again. Do not create an antivirus exclusion merely to suppress the warning. See Microsoft’s Protection history guidance.
If the file was found in a program’s download directory, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application folder, leave it quarantined and run a scan. Use Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. For a deeper check, use Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan if it is available on the system.

A message naming kbdphags.dll does not always mean that the named file is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows found the named DLL but could not load another dependency required by it.
If only one program fails:
- Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the application has its own update.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application from its official developer-provided installer.
Do not automatically reinstall Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET because a generic DLL page recommends them. kbdphags.dll is a Windows keyboard-layout component, and there is no evidence that it belongs to those packages.
Fix 5: inspect the file path and signature
If a copy of kbdphags.dll exists, its location matters more than its filename.

A file in a Windows system directory may be legitimate, but location alone is not proof. A copy in an application directory, Downloads folder, temporary directory, or an unfamiliar program folder deserves additional scrutiny.

A missing or invalid Microsoft signature is a warning sign. Do not replace a suspicious copy with another download. Run Microsoft Defender, remove the untrusted copy through the security product, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Do not compare a public file’s size or version with your installation and assume that a mismatch proves corruption. Windows builds and architectures use different component versions.
Fix 6: check the CBS log if SFC cannot repair it
If SFC reports unrepaired files:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Open the
sfcdetails.txtfile on your desktop. - Look for entries identifying unrepaired files and their paths.
- Restart and run DISM again if the component store was not repaired.
- Run
sfc /scannowonce more.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer simply because its filename matches. A manual replacement is appropriate only with a known-good file from the same Windows version and servicing build, with matching architecture and a verifiable Microsoft signature. Microsoft’s SFC repair guidance treats this as a controlled last resort, not a normal download procedure.
Fix 7: drivers and Windows Features are usually not the answer
kbdphags.dll is not a printer driver, graphics driver, DirectX component, or optional .NET assembly. Device Manager is therefore not the primary repair location.

If the error began alongside a broader keyboard or input-device failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the affected hardware.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device, then restart if appropriate.
- Use the computer manufacturer’s official support channel for a hardware-specific driver.
Do not remove keyboard devices merely to repair a missing Windows layout DLL. Windows Features also does not normally provide kbdphags.dll; enabling unrelated features will not restore it.

Do not run:
regsvr32 kbdphags.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. kbdphags.dll is a keyboard-layout component associated with the KbdLayerDescriptor export, not a normal self-registering COM library. Registration errors will not repair the Windows component store.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading kbdphags.dll from an unofficial DLL site can introduce:
- Malware or a modified binary
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
- A file that does not match the component store
- A replacement that hides the underlying servicing or malware problem
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows language settings, Microsoft Defender, and Windows recovery instead. If manual replacement becomes unavoidable, use only a same-build trusted Windows source and verify the signature.
Advanced recovery when repair still fails
Use System Restore if the problem began after a recent update or system change and a suitable restore point exists:
- Open Start.
- Type Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can undo drivers, updates, and system changes.
If multiple Windows components remain damaged and DISM, SFC, and System Restore fail, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first. Startup Repair is mainly for boot failures and is not a normal fix for a keyboard-layout DLL error.
FAQ
Is kbdphags.dll safe?
A genuine Microsoft copy in the expected Windows location is a legitimate Windows component. An unsigned copy or one found in an unrelated folder should be investigated.

Should I reinstall Visual C++?
No. There is no evidence that kbdphags.dll is a Visual C++ Redistributable file.
Should I reinstall the affected application?
Only if Windows repair succeeds and one application still fails. In that case, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
Is Phags-pa malware?
No. The Phags-pa keyboard layout is a legitimate Windows layout. Its presence does not by itself indicate malware.
What if SFC reports no violations but the error remains?
Check the exact path in the error, review Event Viewer and Windows Security history, and determine whether the application is reporting a missing dependency rather than a missing kbdphags.dll.
Does the file need to be registered?
No. Do not use regsvr32 for this keyboard-layout component.
Do 32-bit and 64-bit Windows use the same file?
Windows system directories separate architectures, and builds can differ. Do not copy a file between System32, SysWOW64, or another computer without confirming the Windows build, architecture, and signature.
