The keyboardfiltercore.dll error usually points to a damaged or unavailable Windows Keyboard Filter component. Before repairing anything, identify which program is requesting keyboardfiltercore.dll, when the message appears, and whether the computer is running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
- Which program triggers the message? Note the application name, shortcut, startup item, kiosk shell, or sign-in process involved.
- When does it happen? Record whether it appears during startup, after Windows Update, while launching one application, or only on a managed or kiosk device.
- Which Windows edition is installed? Go to Settings > System > About and check Windows specifications.
- Is the file in the expected Windows location? Do not download or copy a replacement before checking its signature and path.
- Does the message say “specified module could not be found”? That can mean a dependency is missing even when the named DLL is present.
The safest repair is to restore Windows servicing or repair the affected application, not to replace the DLL manually.
What keyboardfiltercore.dll is
keyboardfiltercore.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL associated with the Keyboard Filter feature. Its embedded description is Keyboard Filter Hooks, and public file metadata identifies Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Windows as the product.
Keyboard Filter is designed for locked-down systems. It can suppress selected key combinations from physical, on-screen, and touch keyboards, which is useful for kiosks, embedded devices, shared terminals, and managed deployments. Microsoft documents the component as Client-KeyboardFilter.

It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX file, or general-purpose runtime that every Windows installation must contain. Microsoft supports Keyboard Filter on Windows 10 and Windows 11 Enterprise, Enterprise LTSC, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. It is not universally available on Home or ordinary Pro installations. See Microsoft’s Keyboard Filter documentation for the supported editions and feature behavior.
That explains why an ordinary desktop user may see this error unexpectedly. A kiosk package, management script, incomplete Windows upgrade, damaged application, antivirus quarantine event, or leftover startup entry may be trying to load a feature that is absent or only partially installed.
Fix 1: Identify the program making the request
If the dialog names an application, start there. Do not assume that the last program you installed owns the DLL.
Check the application shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
- Note the executable name and installation folder.
- Cancel the dialog without changing the shortcut.
If the error appears when Windows starts:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for recently added, unknown, kiosk, shell, keyboard, or device-management entries.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- Record the publisher and folder before disabling it.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by installation date if that information is shown, and look for software installed around the time the error began.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security before restoring anything
A security product may have quarantined a legitimate Windows file, or it may have blocked an illegitimate copy with the same filename.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or blocked items.
- Open a relevant event and inspect the detected file path, publisher, and detection details.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file if its path and Microsoft signature are verified and the detection is confirmed to be a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the device again. Protection History keeps events for a limited period, so an old quarantine may no longer appear.
If the file is in an unusual application folder, has no valid Microsoft signature, or appears alongside other suspicious symptoms, do not whitelist it merely because its name is correct. Run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline through the same scan-options screen. Fix 3: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows
Start with Windows Update because a pending cumulative or feature update may contain the missing component or correct incomplete servicing.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Then repair the Windows component store and protected system files.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the program again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source. Microsoft documents both tools in its Windows image repair guidance.

If SFC says it could not repair the file
Do not copy a DLL from another computer. First, review the SFC details:
- Open Terminal (Admin).
- Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Open
sfcdetails.txton the desktop. - Look for entries involving
KeyboardFilterCore.dll. - Run DISM again if necessary, restart, and retry
sfc /scannow.
If DISM cannot repair the component store, move to the recovery options described later in this guide.
Fix 4: Re-enable Keyboard Filter on supported Windows editions
Use this fix only if the computer is supposed to use Keyboard Filter, such as a kiosk, point-of-service terminal, embedded deployment, or managed device.

First verify the edition under Settings > System > About. The feature is intended for Enterprise, Enterprise LTSC, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. If DISM reports that the feature is unknown or unavailable, do not force the command. Check the Windows edition and build with the device administrator.

To enable the feature:
- Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
Dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:Client-KeyboardFilter
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the kiosk or managed application.
You can also use the graphical interface:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Expand Device Lockdown.
- Select Keyboard Filter.
- Select OK.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
If the feature was intentionally removed from a managed image, contact the administrator or image maintainer before enabling it. Re-enabling it may change the device’s keyboard behavior.
Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
When the error appears only with one application, repair that application before changing Windows.
For a Microsoft Store or packaged application in Windows 11:

- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not work, return to the same screen and choose Reset, if available. Reset can remove the application’s local data. If neither option helps, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or your organization’s approved software source.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart and test the program.
Microsoft’s app and program repair instructions cover these paths.
Do not use a DLL download sites site as the application’s repair source. If the program is a kiosk shell or managed package, reinstall the complete package supplied by its vendor or administrator. There is no verified Microsoft download page for obtaining KeyboardFilterCore.dll separately.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies
Windows has separate 32-bit and 64-bit application environments. On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system binaries are normally associated with System32, while 32-bit components are commonly associated with SysWOW64. Exact paths can vary by Windows build and component servicing.

A 32-bit application cannot necessarily use a 64-bit DLL, and the reverse is also true. More importantly, “specified module could not be found” may mean that KeyboardFilterCore.dll exists but one of its dependencies does not.

Check the affected program’s documentation or contact its vendor to determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Let Windows servicing or the application’s official installer supply the matching files.
Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not a general fix for this DLL. Those runtimes matter only if the error identifies a separate missing dependency belonging to one of them. Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable documentation does not identify KeyboardFilterCore.dll as part of that package.
Fix 7: Update related device drivers only when symptoms point there
Keyboard Filter is a Windows feature, not a device driver. Device Manager will not normally restore a missing Windows component, but driver repair can be relevant if the problem began with keyboard, touchscreen, input, or kiosk hardware changes.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, and any relevant touchscreen or vendor-specific category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver, if available. Do not remove an unknown device unless you have a documented replacement driver.
Finding the correct driver among several hardware entries can involve checking device IDs and matching Windows architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported stale drivers; driver installation through the full version is optional, and updating drivers will not replace the need to repair Windows or reinstall an application when those are the real causes.

regsvr32 is intended for registering compatible COM or ActiveX DLLs. Microsoft documents Keyboard Filter as an optional Windows feature enabled through Windows Features or DISM, not as a DLL that must be registered manually.
Running commands such as these is not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 KeyboardFilterCore.dll
It can produce another error without fixing the missing component. It can also encourage copying the file into the wrong folder.
Verify a suspected file safely
If a file already exists on the computer, verify it rather than replacing it.

- Use File Explorer to locate the file.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
- Review the General and Details tabs for the description and product information.
A matching filename is not proof of authenticity. An unsigned copy in a temporary, downloads, or random application folder deserves additional investigation. Do not disable security software to make it load.
Fix 8: Use Windows recovery options if repair fails
If DISM, SFC, feature repair, and application reinstall do not resolve the problem, choose a recovery method based on when the failure began.
- If a suitable restore point predates the error, use System Restore. It can roll back system files, registry settings, updates, drivers, and installed programs without normally removing personal files. Open Settings > System > About > System protection, or search for Create a restore point, then select System Restore.
- On Windows 11, check Settings > System > Recovery for Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.
- If the issue follows a failed upgrade or serious component-store damage, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options and back up important files first.
Frequently asked questions
Is keyboardfiltercore.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component, but malware can use the same filename. Verify the file’s location and Microsoft digital signature, then scan the device if anything looks unusual.
Can I download keyboardfiltercore.dll separately?
No trusted Microsoft download page provides this DLL as an individual repair package. Restore it through Windows servicing, re-enable Keyboard Filter on a supported edition, or repair the application that is requesting it.
Why does a normal home PC mention Keyboard Filter?
A leftover startup entry, damaged update, incomplete feature change, quarantined file, or incorrectly packaged application may request the component even when the computer is not a kiosk. Identify the requesting program before changing Windows features.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. keyboardfiltercore.dll belongs to Windows Keyboard Filter, not the Visual C++ Redistributable. Repair another runtime only when the error explicitly identifies that runtime or a separate dependency.
Should I copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The wrong architecture, wrong Windows build, or missing dependency can leave the error unchanged and create a security problem. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or the official application installer instead.
What if the error appears only on a kiosk?
Have the device administrator verify the Windows edition and whether Client-KeyboardFilter is intended to be installed. Re-enable it with DISM, restart, and then validate the kiosk configuration.
