The extraction shooter never reached a full release; player access was limited to closed-alpha tests.
Why was PUBG: Black Budget cancelled?
In its official Steam development update, PUBG Studios said it reviewed the project’s status and future direction and concluded that the current direction would not allow it to provide a lasting player experience. The explanation was issued on behalf of the studio; the announcement did not identify an individual speaker.
The studio thanked participants in its closed-alpha tests for sharing feedback and said lessons from development and testing would inform future projects. It did not name a successor game or announce a plan for the developers who worked on Black Budget.
Was Black Budget released?
No. Black Budget did not reach a full release. The documented opportunity to play it was through closed-alpha testing, including a second alpha scheduled for June 26–29, 2026, according to notices on the official Steam page. PUBG Studios later acknowledged alpha participants in its development update.

What kind of game was Black Budget?
Aju Press’s October 1, 2026 report described Black Budget as a PvPvE extraction shooter set on Coli, an island caught in a time loop. Players were to enter as contractors, collect loot, contend with rival teams, AI creatures and supernatural anomalies, then try to extract. The report said matches were planned for up to 45 players in three-person squads. These are reported design details, not results from a released game.
Was it announced less than a year ago?
Only if “announced” refers to the public reveal under the PUBG name. Aju Press reported that Krafton first disclosed the project as Project Black Budget in its third-quarter 2022 earnings materials, and that the PUBG name was attached in November 2025. The development-ending announcement came on October 1, 2026. So the less-than-a-year framing tracks the late-2025 PUBG-branded reveal, not the project’s earliest disclosure.
